To be dreading MMR

Bellver888 · 03/03/2021 23:19

Ds is 14 months old and finally has an appointment for his 1 year jabs tomorrow and I’m really anxious about MMR.

Not about autism it’s more the side effects I’m so worried he’ll be dead poorly.

What should I expect after this?

OP posts:
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/03/2021 05:33

In the real world I don’t know any child, including my own to
have had a had a bad reaction to any of their jabS

GladysTheGroovyMule · 04/03/2021 05:56

One of mine had a slightly raised temperature and was a little bit sick a few hours after her MMR but while that happens for some, most babies are absolutely fine according to the nurse I spoke to on the phone about my PFB, no side effects whatsoever. Anything worse than the above is even more unusual.

UmbilicusProfundus · 04/03/2021 06:02

Very sorry for your experience @Belice9222. I hope you don’t feel guilty or worry that you didn’t read that leaflet beforehand. Any reasonable person would still go ahead with the vaccine even after reading the leaflet. Flowers

Seasidemumma77 · 04/03/2021 06:31

I had my MMR two years ago, after being missed as a child when it was introduced. In my experience the jab itself was stingy, and for about 2 days I had a achy arm and was really tired. Hope that offers you some reassurance

FudgeSundae · 04/03/2021 06:45

No reactions here. My main emotion was feeling pleased and privileged that I could protect my daughter in this way (and for free!). I certainly don’t understand wanting to slap the nurse??

Karmakarmachameleon · 04/03/2021 06:51

Mine was quite ill after the meningitis ones at (I think) 8 and 16 weeks so I was really nervous about the MMR. He was fine - the only side effect was a nasty bruise at the injection site and I’ll take that over measles. For us it was a total non-event!

Karmakarmachameleon · 04/03/2021 06:54

Sorry when I say ‘quite ill’ I mean a fever for 48 hours, nothing more dramatic than that - in case I scare anyone going for the 8/12/16 week jabs.

nicknamehelp · 04/03/2021 06:56

Yes might be off colour for a few days but not as ill as if you don't vaccinate and they get the illness

MrsBotibolsCruise · 04/03/2021 07:45

He’ll be absolutely fine. It’s a public health issue as well as a parental decision to reduce the chance of your child contracting a potentially deadly disease. Needs done. Steer away from FB, its hardly a reputable source of health info!

The Men B and rotavirus vaccines caused minor side effects in my two, MMR was fine. Common effects can be managed with Calpol and the discomfort to baby should be minimal. It’s more upsetting for you than for
baby, promise.

AyeKarumba · 04/03/2021 08:26

He will be fine just give him some calpol.

MakeMineALarge1 · 04/03/2021 08:32

You want to slap the nurse who gave the jab? You do your research on FB, sounds like you're looking for reasons to encourage your "health anxiety."

Greenmarmalade · 04/03/2021 08:34

My 4 have all been ok. Raised temperature, sleepy, grumpy.

Hankunamatata · 04/03/2021 08:45

OP if your worried. Ring gp and ask for a.phone consult. They can go through sons history and yours/dads family history to see if theres anything contraindicated. May set your mind at ease

MindyStClaire · 04/03/2021 08:48

DD1 had a high temp a week or ten days after hers, it can happen when the measles bit of the MMR kicks in. A rough couple of days with lots of Calpol and cuddles, and then she was fine. No worse than any of the illnesses she brought back from nursery and well worth it.

MrsMonkeyBear · 04/03/2021 10:04

Dd2 is due her mrr booster on Friday. She was fine with the first. Usual post vaccination grouchy-ness and a bit of a temp that calpol fixed along with cuddles.

You'll always read about the horror stories around vaccinations because no one would post something about a kid being completely fine.

BeautifulDay12 · 04/03/2021 10:24

Unfortunately it isn’t something you can predict. Whilst most people on mn have had a positive experience of jabs with minimal reactions there are people who do seem more susceptible. GPs encourage vaccinations no matter what your history. I have experience of this myself, having had a very severe reaction to a vaccine in childhood and told not to have any more...every GP I have seen over the past 20 years has told me I should have the MMR and this is despite me having had measles (so mild I don’t remember it) , mumps and rubella in childhood!

TurquoiseDress · 04/03/2021 10:26

I think maybe a fever or feeling slightly off the next day or so

Much better & milder than the alternative which would be risking contracting one of the disease it's protecting against

Bellver888 · 04/03/2021 10:27

I’ll add to the posts hopefully, we’ve just had them, he’s fine now after some tears (from me as well) and chocolate

OP posts:
GreenSlide · 04/03/2021 10:29

@tararabumdeay

Babies are incredibly resiliant. He'll be fine. Mine was so indignant that the doctor gave him the injection he railed against the process afterwards in the waiting room vowing, 'I'm going to stab Doctor Park.' He was 2.

No side effects, just a affronted.

This made me laughGrinat the 3 year 4 month jabs my wee boy was raging too. Jumping up and down in indignation and complaining about his sore leg for the rest of the day Blush

TurquoiseDress · 04/03/2021 10:30

Re advice, nurses are the best ones to ask as they are generally the ones giving vaccinations to little ones & will have done a huge number of them!

You can call the GP for advice but it's likely one of the practice nurses will be equally as helpful if not more!

MyLittleOrangutan · 04/03/2021 10:31

Watch his temperature. My husband developed epilepsy after his. Little info as to why but from PILs parenting skills and what we know of vaccines and stuff. He must have run a massive temperature that went untreated until he started seizing. So have a list of side effects and keep your eye on him to make sure if something develops, you catch it on time. Not scaremongering but things do happen.

MrsBotibolsCruise · 04/03/2021 10:44

Hang on there’s a massive difference between febrile convulsions due to post-vaccine fever (a known side effect) and saying the MMR vaccine causes epilepsy. There is absolutely no evidence of this.

TurquoiseDress · 04/03/2021 10:51

@MyLittleOrangutan

Sounds like a febrile convulsion due to extremely high fever?

I've never heard of vaccinations causing epilepsy- this isn't very helpful for worried parents trying to make decisions about vaccinating their children

FudgeSundae · 04/03/2021 10:54

Yeah it’s very common for epilepsy to first manifest from 6 months to 6 years and when there’s a high temperature. That absolutely doesn’t mean vaccines cause epilepsy!

MillyMinamino · 04/03/2021 10:55

DD had them recently, she cried for about 20 seconds then was fine. She was a bit snugglier than normal for a day afterwards, slight temperature which came down with calpol. No other effects at all.
