Was put on parents group chat and driving me mad. Person posting says it's so easy that even 'toddlers could work it out if they read it properly'. Confused

Riddle - there are three tarantulas in a round tank and five tarantulas in a rectangle tank. How many legs are in the rectangle tank?

I did the obvious 5x8 = 40 but obviously that's not it...anyone any idea?

well, it silenced Alexa, who is now refusing to talk to me.

Kellymumto2 · 03/03/2021 18:50

The answer is “only one? You’re lucky!”

Aloux · 03/03/2021 18:58

I'd say either 0 or 64 😂

JlstratK · 03/03/2021 18:59

Surely the author meant rectangular tank. In which case there is one, because you can make the word Tarantula from that?

MaybeMaybeNotJ · 03/03/2021 19:28

None because a tank can’t be 2d
So a rectangular prism shaped tank may have legs? Is that reaching? 😂

DragonMoth · 03/03/2021 19:41

1
rectangle

thelonghaul · 03/03/2021 21:02

Yes @boppityboop it's something to do with the tank I'd say. 4 or 0.

Ineke · 03/03/2021 22:54

Could it be none, because a rectangle is only a 2D shape so all the spiders have made a run for it as there are no walls?

rachaelclaire1 · 03/03/2021 23:40

Think it maybe 8 as they cannot live together and are prone to cannibalism

amispeakingenglish · 04/03/2021 00:30

Unless it's on a stand! :)

EugenesAxe · 04/03/2021 08:22

Is it something to do with the fact that rectangle isn't an adjective?

I also though as @AntigoneLost did - that a tarantula would have eaten all the others.

If it is that rectangular tanks don't have legs, then the Q is poorly phrased. I also think 'one' on the basis of the word 'leg' being in the phrase 'the rectangle tank', a bit shit.

dejacqueray · 04/03/2021 08:46

Do we have an answer yet?

AfterEightsBeforeEight · 04/03/2021 10:20

Dear God, thank you for the Boswell thread. I haven't looked at the solution thread yet, but the original one has had me crying with laughter.

HelenAnnC · 04/03/2021 14:19

Think the answer is none because a rectangle is a two dimensional flat shape with no depth therefore the spiders would escape.

MadameFireweed · 04/03/2021 16:32

One tank is 'round' (so two-dimensional, ie flat).
The other tank is 'rectangle' (also two-dimensional, ie flat).
So yes, all the spiders will have buggered off by now.
Maybe the riddler meant spherical and cuboid, who knows?

Person posting says it's so easy that even 'toddlers could work it out if they read it properly'.

Well person posting is a stupid arse because most toddlers couldn't read it at all let alone figure out 8 x 8 = 64.

Kezzywezzy · 04/03/2021 18:05

I see someone said the word LEG was in RECTANGLE. The word TEN is in it too. But no S for TEN LEGS

Well your toddler might not know his 8 times tables. But mine could do his 12s by the time he was 9months old....
HugoPhurst · 06/03/2021 14:17

Not read far so already answered I guess, but I would say one LEG in "rectanGLE tank". Might be right off target but it's the first thing that comes to mind
