AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

The problem with exercising is the sheer volume of air that is inhaled and exhaled in one go. And the humidity.
Still, a surgical mask shouldn't affect performance.

The problem is not so much that runners can't wear masks, but more whether it is a risk in occasional encounters.
If they are running in a group, close together, then it is a good idea for all of them to wear masks.

Well, those damned runners, breathing more than their fair share of air!

Those studies just don't sound right. I could probably spend time finding studies that counter it, but you realise the difference between evidence and academic studies, right?

Clearly haven't been done on asthmatics like me, because I struggle enough wearing a mask in the supermarket. It makes me start coughing after about 15 minutes, which according to my GP is due to my asthma.

I think there should be a strong presumption against further controls on civil liberties, particularly this far into the pandemic. We should be lessening controls, not obsessively inventing new ones.

@TidyOmlette Yay Hong Kong The best place to live in the world if you want to be disappeared.

MercyBooth · 03/03/2021 21:27

I cant take much more of this. Ive been considering this for a while but i really think if i suspected i was seriously ill (and as long as i wasnt in pain) i would just leave it. I dont want to live to an old age. And certainly not for much longer in this shitty second world country. The hypocrisy, the gaslighting, the psychological abuse from those in charge. When im gone certain cunts are going to get seriously haunted.

MummyJ12 · 03/03/2021 21:34

It will affect performance if you are claustrophobic like me! I just about manage 5 minutes in a shop before I have to get out of there because I’m wearing a mask.
So Lweji, I’m afraid you’re wrong and you are yet to fully understand this study. I can’t wear one, the article you have linked quotes,
it “cannot and should not take away from the lived experience of the individual”
“There is limited evidence to support issues for people with asthma or breathing issues. However, it is important to note that many people with acute and chronic respiratory conditions also have anxiety or panic attacks,”

TheJerkStore · 03/03/2021 21:48

@Bertiebiscuit

I agree with Piers - I spend my life trying to dodge sweaty snorting spitting joggers in my park - they are really careless
You need another hobby....
Lweji · 03/03/2021 21:54

but you realise the difference between evidence and academic studies

Please enlighten me. Grin

Of course, the exception that is asthmatics is relevant to all runners. That's exactly what the thread is discussing. Asthmatics. Who run.

Even so, a surgical mask does not reduce the O2 level in the blood.

Again, the exception that shows that then masks should not be worn by everybody.

For every rule there are exceptions. We know.

Except that in the UK everyone seems to be an exception. Grin

Lweji · 03/03/2021 21:57

Note: in case it hasn't been noticed, I'm not in favour of runners wearing masks as a rule. Wink

It's just that (barring I'm sure very justified exceptions) there is no actual reason that prevents them from wearing one. Or walkers, for that matter. Wink

Crikey what are they doing in your park?
Isn't it private property? Can you keep them out with gates or something?

Spidder · 03/03/2021 22:00

I ran tonight. I passed 2 people sitting at bus stops, a couple of for a walk, a bloke I know (running) and a cars. I almost got run over by a bloke on a bike on the pavement. I was on the left. He was coming down the hill, towards me, also on the left. No helmet I didn't move out of his way cos surely it's bikes that should be on the road.

Joeblack066 · 03/03/2021 22:04

@Fembot123

I wear a snood type thing that I can pull up to calm down the hysterics as well as giving a wide berth.
I like this idea. I have one and I think I’ll do this in future. Thanks!
MummyJ12 · 03/03/2021 22:06

Lweji, you don’t understand and that’s fine. If you’re not a runner (and you’re obviously not!) you can’t appreciate the difference between ‘performance’ and people’s enjoyment and comfort in an activity that is so healthy and actually helping the fight against obesity in this country, therefore alleviating pressure on the NHS. Enough of the judging. Of course there’s always an exception, there always is. Thank goodness you don’t run the country!!

MummyJ12 · 03/03/2021 22:08

Thank goodness Piers Morgan isn’t PM (can you imagine....?!)

Fembot123 · 03/03/2021 22:21

No probs @Joeblack066

Classy Lweji. Lovely post there. Says a lot.
I’m so sorry if your inflammatory and contradictory posts have provoked a reaction.

Wantubackforgood · 03/03/2021 23:12

If you can't run with a mask on don't run .

Kimye4eva · 03/03/2021 23:19

@Wantubackforgood

If you can't run with a mask on don't run .
Why? There is no requirement to wear a mask outside.
heidipi · 03/03/2021 23:27

FFS just give each other room. Anyone who is so worried about someone running past them - so gone in a couple of seconds - might want to just stay at home.

sogi · 03/03/2021 23:29

@ReverendRicketyCricket

I want Piers Morgan to shut up and fuck off. What chance of that do you think?
This.

Did he ask everyone around him on his Xmas break in the Bahamas to do the same ? 🤔

Sparrowcrane · 03/03/2021 23:37

He clearly does not do any exercise, perhaps he should try running or even fast walking with a mask on. Viruses are spread predominantly in enclosed environments. People have become too paranoid, we need some basic education here

LucieStar · 03/03/2021 23:39

@Wantubackforgood

If you can't run with a mask on don't run .

For some reason I'm hearing this in Boris' voice ... whilst stood at his podium.
Grin

Silenceisgolden20 · 03/03/2021 23:49

Does this include all the annoying dog walkers too?

Silenceisgolden20 · 03/03/2021 23:51

@Wantubackforgood

If you can't run with a mask on don't run .
Oh please. Don't be belligerent.

Why don't all the walkers wear a mask and then the runners can have some peace?
