@ferretface

What a depressing thread.

Since the running track closed because of lockdown I've been too worried to do hard speed sessions outside because i don't like stressing people out and it's inevitable that when doing a hard session, you are going to breathe harder. I give lots and lots of room and there's no way there's risk involved but even so some people seem to act like you're radioactive even when you're literally on the other side of the road. The stress of it was spoiling my running so i just do my speed sessions on the treadmill now and only do easy runs outside. During an easy run i'm running at a totally conversational pace, not breathing harder than anyone else using the pavement and i still give space but even so you get some looks. Fed up with it tbh. Roll on the track and activities reopening so we're not all crammed into the same space and i can go back to not worrying and enjoying my exercise.

The closure of outdoor running tracks is one of the most bizarre results of lockdown. You can control the numbers, socially isolate and it provides a safe space for people to train in. But no. Closed for months.

Try to explain to anyone that fit runners often train at an easy pace and aren't puffing or perspiring as much as some walkers, and some posters will accuse you of elitism.

Very impressed by the fact you built your own personal bridge!!

ferretface · 03/03/2021 17:09

@GreenlandTheMovie yeah i have no idea why the track is closed. It's always a lot quieter than the paths in the park and there are no touch points- the gates are open when the track is open, payment is contactless etc. Plus you know that the handful of other people using it are not going to act like you're giving them the Black Death during the second or two as you pass them from two lanes away!

rwalker · 03/03/2021 17:16

A runner here alway give people space but quiet difficult when they walk 2 abreast taking the entire pavemant .

Twonka · 03/03/2021 17:23

A runner ran past us the other day with one of those snoode type masks and lifted it up as he ran past then lowered it, super considerate...

Why the ellipses?
HeadNorth · 03/03/2021 17:25

I'm another runner that managed a PB today on my 10k as I pounded, huffed, puffed and breathed my filthy germs thither and yon. Thanks Piers - I know it will delight him to have given a boost to so many of our running times.

itsgettingwierd · 03/03/2021 17:27

I saw a photo yesterday of him walking non socially distances without a mask.

He thought everyone should suck up Christmas, that it should have been cancelled and the boarders shut - yet flew to Antigua for the holidays.

Tbh I'll start listening to his ideas when he actually practices what he preaches. Until then I treat most of what he says as media fodder and just another chance for him to rant.

However if scientists said it!

Hmm1234 · 03/03/2021 17:31

Piers is trying to be the far lefts version of Donald trump. Wish he would get of the news and go back to the interviews

Morgysmum · 03/03/2021 17:31

I run and I am unfit, but I go out about 8pm, not many around. I don't go through the park, it's dark then, even when it's lighter I would go through the park, too many weirdos. I move when possible and when not, I hold my breath and hope they pass before I pass out.
It would help if people went into single file to give everyone more space, but I have noticed a few that don't and not just when I am running, but also walking with my son, I will get him, to either go in front or behind to give more room. But we have come a a group of ladies walking around the park chatting away, 3 of them all stayed in a group, we had to go on the grass, this was pre lockdown. But surely moving to single file for 2 minutes to give some space will not kill you.

gingas · 03/03/2021 17:33

Has Piers Morgan been put on TV to simply act as a 'provocateur'? (I think that's the word). Someone who just shit stirs for ratings? Or...er... something like that... Confused

Darlingx · 03/03/2021 17:36

Totally agree where I live they brush past and even run into you sweating and heavy breathing . The strangest thing is people run down the high road where people are food shopping its the most bizarre thing ?!? Why would u run where people are shopping when parallel to that is an empty street or green I just don’t get why this has become a thing during Covid ?? l

I'm loving all of the PBs on the back of this thread. GrinGrin

@Januaryissodull

Before I read on mumsnet I had never realised that there was such hatred towards runners and cyclists.

Before Covid I also didn't realise how many miserable, mean spirited, intolerant and narrow minded people there were either l, people who are incapable of doing basic risk assessments. People who want to suck the joy out of everything and spoil anything that they don't understand.

Sad really. I can only think they must have very empty lives.

And you have it in a nutshell!
MaddieElla · 03/03/2021 17:42

I too am loving the PBs. I also got a Strava crown today which will REALLY piss 'em off.

Also, PP, no one ran into you. Stop lying. ✋

Pennycrown · 03/03/2021 17:44

He didn't wear a mask whilst he was out for a walk with Simon Cowell

LoveLifeBeHappy · 03/03/2021 17:47

Is there evidence to support his claim? I understand masks indoors, but seem pointless outside, especially when you're running.

TidyOmlette · 03/03/2021 17:48

It’s done in other countries. Children in Hong Kong are currently wearing masks during PE classes and guess what? Their economy is open and moving! Most places currently open to 10pm

I agree- though I shouldn't have really been surprised given the hysteria over chicken pox and the comments people got if they said they were taking their poxy child out for a walk in their buggy with the rainshield over them because the mum needed a walk/prescription/pint of milk/add your own "essential" or "non-essential" item.

Covid has made people even less rational. People have been vaccinated in the vulnerable categories as well as a lot of people who are not vulnerable. We know the vaccine works. We know you can't catch covid outside very easily at all, and that you need more than fleeting contact. We also know that fit people are likely to deal with covid better if they catch it. Yet we hate runners and cyclists.

It Makes No Sense.

Doubt it.
It's against current WHO advice, too.

Congrars on the crown. I didn't get a crown, but I did get 1 segment pr, 3 2nd fastest segments and 1 3rd fastest, so not bad for a chatty, easy paced trail run. Only place I have a crown is where I do sprints.

I agree too.

Covid has had some frightening impacts on people's logic and general humanity.

LucieStar · 03/03/2021 17:53

Aww now I want a Strava crown.
How does one get that? Grin
