Oh what a good idea to video some evidence!

TheOrigRights · 03/03/2021 14:12

@MaddieElla

Yes *@TheOrigRights* I pause my music now when I'm approaching because I'm sure I sound like I'm yodelling if I keep it playing and shout too loud.

Also I don't want them to hear my banging tunes 90s trance

Ha ha - oh that was you I could hear yodelling Grin

My "banging tunes" are currently the (new) Annie soundtrack.

Winesalot · 03/03/2021 14:12

I think I probably shout hello to everyone because I run with earphones

I probably sound abrupt because I am asthmatic and suffer Exercise induced Bronchial issues. And I squint as my glasses are often foggy. I do say hello or wave as I go past. I smile to make up for the squinting. So , I probably fit into some of the following.

Happy AND deranged AND overfamiliar.

LucieStar · 03/03/2021 14:34

*Well! I have returned from my run, and went out of my way to say "hello", "excuse me", "I love you 3000" to everyone I encountered, in my helium voice (good description by the way). And do you know what they did, dear reader? They mostly smiled, waved, said hello back. Only one person didn't acknowledge me but she may have been an ally of Thanos. Or just a mardy arse walker, perish the thought.

I was waiting for that old chestnut to surface
"I walk faster than the runners." hmm
You do realise that that really slow runner
may have been running at a really fast pace 20 mins prior to you seeing them.
Or they're having a slow recovery day.“

But I do 🤷‍♀️ I walk along a prom where you can see people for at least a mile. There are lots of new runners this year, good for them too, but they’re still very slow. So I move out of their way.

Didn’t realise it was an old chestnut.

LucieStar · 03/03/2021 14:44

There does seem to be some excellent hyperbole and exaggeration on this thread though. That is good for a laugh.

I particularly enjoyed the "ponding", "weighed down by tech" (still waiting for someone to enlighten me as to what this means Grin), and "breathing in my face".

Brilliant. This thread has lifted my mood so much, I don't feel the need to go for my run today so I won't be breathing all over anyone today. Phew. Grin

LucieStar · 03/03/2021 14:44

jerometheturnipking · 03/03/2021 14:51

I'm waiting on hearing what it is to be "weighed down by tech".

Maybe my Apple Watch is what's stopping me from getting a sub 24 minute 5k time.

A generation ago “You can’t catch AIDS from a toilet seat” was a message that took years of campaigning to get through to the public.

“You can’t catch COVID by walking unmasked on a sidewalk or sitting in a busy park” needs to catch on quicker

As someone who has trained and done HIV outreach, I’m frustrated by the way that so many lessons from the fight against AIDS have been lost or ignored when it comes to COVID, particularly around harm reduction. It feels like public health is starting from scratch.

Are people running in military boots?!
I can't work it out ....

Whatever9999 · 03/03/2021 15:20

Ah well just been for a run, sadly I didn't get to huff and puff over anyone (not even my support bubble running partner that I'm allowed to be closer than 2m with), or barge in to anyone or anything else us runners (and I run not jog). Partly because we deliberately went somewhere where we were less likely to come across crowds ( still in our district before anyone shouts stay local), but mostly because it's too cold and foggy for most of the lockdown walkers. We did see one person walking though and because he had already started across the field, guess what, we stopped and waited for him. When we came to a field full of horses we walked, because that's what considerate people do. We stayed on the actual path, even when it was churned up in to sticky mud and we shut gates behind us.
We also saw paths that just a couple of months ago were mere single tracks that had been widened by inconsiderate walkers to at least 6ft in width. We saw gates left open, We lost count of the piles of dog poo...but hey blame runners for the world's woes, when it's actually inconsiderate people of all speeds.

Winesalot · 03/03/2021 15:21

Still waiting to find out if I have missed a significant cultural more by expecting people in groups on the footpath to allow others to pass though? Seriously?

I have seen posts over the years that have declared that the onus is only ever on someone coming from behind to be aware of who is on the path (ie. it is unreasonable to expect any person to be aware that someone is behind them).

I have seen posts that declare that it is unreasonable to expect people with children to have the children consider other's use of the path and allow space for people to pass. And that goes with dogs as well.

So, is it unreasonable to expect a group of people who have taken up a large proportion of the path to make room for someone else to go past from either direction?

Because according to at least one poster on here, anyone wishing to pass should be getting off the path if a group has not left enough space.

TheOrigRights · 03/03/2021 15:22

Oh, I don't stop when I run though fields of livestock. I presume if they are in a field with a public footpath that they are OK with that.
Should I be walking?

MaddieElla · 03/03/2021 15:28

Fields off sheep etc I run through, they tend to keep their distance anyway.

Horses I would walk past because they can be unpredictable and I’m scared of them. But usually they are in penned fields and I’m running past so neither is bothered by the other. I don’t think I’d be brave enough to go through a field with horses if there wasn’t a barrier.

Whatever9999 · 03/03/2021 15:29

@TheOrigRights

Personally I would always walk through a field of horses, they can be skittish and injure themselves or you. With other animals I make a judgement call each time, atm the sheep local are carrying lambs, and so I decide how close they are to the path before going through. If they're on the other side of the field I'll run, but if close to the path I'll walk. Cows make me quite nervous, but the only herd I go anywhere near has a huge area to roam, again if they're too close to the footpath I'll walk, but usually they're at least half mile off. During one race I had to go through a field with a big "beware of the bull" sign, I'd been assured it had been moved, but if I had seen anything cow shaped I wouldn't have just run, I'd have sprinted.

ferretface · 03/03/2021 15:43

What a depressing thread.

Since the running track closed because of lockdown I've been too worried to do hard speed sessions outside because i don't like stressing people out and it's inevitable that when doing a hard session, you are going to breathe harder. I give lots and lots of room and there's no way there's risk involved but even so some people seem to act like you're radioactive even when you're literally on the other side of the road. The stress of it was spoiling my running so i just do my speed sessions on the treadmill now and only do easy runs outside. During an easy run i'm running at a totally conversational pace, not breathing harder than anyone else using the pavement and i still give space but even so you get some looks. Fed up with it tbh. Roll on the track and activities reopening so we're not all crammed into the same space and i can go back to not worrying and enjoying my exercise.

I'm training for an ultra and live on the actual route so have been running portions of it. In the first 13 miles I have to go through 2 fields full of horses and then a couple miles further on along the other side of a fence to horses. First few times through I was nervous, but have built up confidence to walk through. Mostly the horses ignore me, although occasionally they trot over in my direction to take a look. Would never run through the fields if their are horses in there though.

Erm, I walk at 13-14 minute mile pace when I am in "grumpy commuter" mode, which gives me a 45ish minute 5k. Plenty of people who finish a parkrun more slowly than that - every week, not just when they are having a social/gentle day! And they are running, not walking (or at least they run to the finish!)

I've just been for a walk now and got to 5k in 46 minutes.

Robintakeover · 03/03/2021 16:15

Poppycat10 - it’s me that seems to have unintentionally opened this can of worms with my comment about running being harder than walking . I’m really sad to see it used to take a pop at slow park runners . It takes a lot of balls to be that slow runner in front of often hundreds of others and is a first step for many to really turn their lives around .

badpuma · 03/03/2021 16:26

@LucieStar

"Pounding" not ponding 😂😂
I don't know. My run last sunday started unexpectedly ponding when I found that the bridge across the last stream I have to cross had been swept away.

I managed to stop(!) and assemble a pseudo bridge from logs so I got across with only one very wet foot.

Definitely more ponding than pounding.

TheOrigRights · 03/03/2021 16:27

I believe that horses bolt and cows stampede.

This reassured me when the 'horse field' had horses in it, but totally freaking me out when it had cows in it.
