AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

@Daphnise

Runners are a nuisance in my area, and I agree they should wear masks- anything to make them feel uncomfortable, and lessen their entitled attitude.
As opposed to yours?

You have no more right to the pavement or canal path than a runner has.

Sounds like you probably hate anyone who does anything you don't do.

fizbosshoes · 02/03/2021 20:14

@MaddieElla
@UrAWizHarry

I notice exactly the same that male runners might nod or return a greeting but female runners very rarely do.

Bonnieonthelam · 02/03/2021 20:17

@GreenlandTheMovie

As one of the many asthmatics who run to help my asthma, you really do not want to encourage many asthmatics to wear a mask while exerting themselves.

Unless you want a wheezing, spluttering individual double over in respiratory distress, with the amount of attention from helpful people that usually attracts.

I can hear about cope with wearing a mask in the supermarkets or at appointments but wearing one does make me cough.

Piers Morgan needs to look after his own health before dictating to people how they should exercise. He is not exactly healthy looking for his age.

As an asthmatic, former runner, I don’t even understand this. If you’re having it that hard surely you’d stop, masks aren’t going to make that much a difference. Wear one and don’t splutter over others or keep your distance. It’s simple...
Lovingspring · 02/03/2021 20:17

My relative in Victoria, Australia cannot understand why we don't have compulsory mask wearing outside.

If you're a former asthmatic, how can it not have been explained to you that different asthmatics have different trigger factors? I certainly didn't know that wearing a mask made me cough and struggle to breathe - how could I? My trigger factors are normally high humidity and poor air quality/pollution.

I don't "splutter over people" and I don't "have it hard" - I'm actually so fit (sub 40 minute 10k) that my easy sessions, which are most sessions, are run at a pace where I barely get out of breath. I do two hard interval sessions a week, and they would be track sessions if the damned thing was closed.

How rude and unkind are you? I hope any asthmatics thinking of taking up running (and it often does help improve your peak flow) don't listen to your addled nonsense and aren't put off as a result.

Chloemol · 02/03/2021 20:31

I agree with Piers. My way runners don’t care, then run right up next to you, no running the other side of the run, and their hot sweaty puffy breath goes all over you

MrBullinaChinaShop · 02/03/2021 20:35

Hot sweaty puffy breath Grin

Januaryissodull · 02/03/2021 20:36

Before I read on mumsnet I had never realised that there was such hatred towards runners and cyclists.

Before Covid I also didn't realise how many miserable, mean spirited, intolerant and narrow minded people there were either l, people who are incapable of doing basic risk assessments. People who want to suck the joy out of everything and spoil anything that they don't understand.

Sad really. I can only think they must have very empty lives.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 02/03/2021 20:46

Oh a runner bashing thread from those who cant even run a fucking bath therefore have a bitter resentment against people who have got discipline and motivation and lack their own so feel better wanting others to stop jogging /running and join them in the world of being boxset bingers and boozing.
In fact no, I tell you what annoys me, people who never stepped out in the countryside before lockdown but now have decided to hike treacherous, muddy hills in converse or white espadrilles and leave picnic litter/beer bottles everywhere!!

Trulyatraditionalman · 02/03/2021 20:47

Just checked back at this discussion and fuck me - more "huff and puff" than the bloody wolf in Little Miss Riding Hood.

Going out for a lovely 4 mile maskless run tomorrow morning. Will remain socially distant, courteous and cheerfully curse Piers Morgan.

I'm a skater. I wear a snood around my neck. When I'm close to people I pull it over my nose and mouth. If I'm just taking it easy I leave it at that. If I'm moving fast and working hard, if I've passed someone walking in the same direction as me, I pull it down slightly and breath fresh air in through my nose and breath out my mouth into the mask until I've travelled a good bit past them. I do this as I don't think anyone following after me should have to breath in my wake.

It's annoying, I look forward to the day when it will no longer be necessary. But for now, it's an irritant worth dealing with to keep people safe.

Trulyatraditionalman · 02/03/2021 20:58

I just can't believe the amount of people chucking runners into one damned melting pot of huffy-puffy entitledness.

OP posts:
mycatisgivingyouthefinger · 02/03/2021 21:01

This is a truly weird thread.

Anyone saying that runners breath all over them is lying through their teeth. A runner is past you in one second. They're literally running past you. Unless you're running at the same speed as them, in front of them, and running backwards, how in fuck's name are they breathing on you? On other threads people lie and say that they get coughed on in supermarkets.

Some utter lunatics on this website.

Againstmachine · 02/03/2021 21:01

I do run but not for a bit, but I do a bit of walking on the park and the amount of other people walking 3 or 4 abreast who don't move and expect me walking in a different direction to get our of their way is unbelievable, I have stopped moving out of way and lead with my shoulder when I get close.

I think a lot of people walking need to look at her own behaviour first before accusing others.

And the huffing and puffing all over people, it is pure fiction exaggerated rubbish.

Againstmachine · 02/03/2021 21:04

I prefer to take my advice from experts in infectious diseases rather than these 'experts' who keep popping up on GMB

Jake Dunning says "No, because it's totally disproportionate to any reasonable estimate of risk. Stop whipping up hysteria and anxieties. Stop singling out outdoor runners for no good scientific reason and instead focus on avoiding the actual high risk, indoor scenarios for transmission."

Even the advisors on TV press conferences have said it isn't neccessary.

mycatisgivingyouthefinger · 02/03/2021 21:05

@gurglebelly

Having had a runner coming towards me huff directly into my face the other day (I stepped aside but he turned his bloody head towards me!!) I agree with Piers (for the first time ever)

This is the kind of bullshit I'm talking about. You need help.

Skysblue · 02/03/2021 21:07

Morgan will do anything for a headline 🙄 he’s an attention junkie please ignore him.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 02/03/2021 21:10

@AuntieStella

I give plenty of space tomwalkers whenever possible, including waiting when the path narrows.

When however walkers are 5 or 6 abreast, taking the entire width of the path, and showing no inclination to move to merely 3 abreast (which would give plenty of room for everyone) then chances are I'll just keep going even thoughmeans passing v close

That happens pretty much every day, and I think everyone needs to think a bit more about how much space they are taking up on footpaths, and how to share nicely

This!!!
hamstersarse · 02/03/2021 21:10

Someone I know posted a run on Strava today titled "Fuck Off Piers Morgan". Now I understand why.

It is a level of insanity beyond description to ask a person to wear a mask while they require increased levels of oxygen.

Would people be 'up in arms' if a runner in a mask died?

Or are we in 'covid mass hysteria' territory here as I suspect?

XenoBitch · 02/03/2021 21:11

Piers needs a full size mask over his entire face.. preferable one that stops him talking.
Like the last few comments have said.. there seems to be a lot of vitriol towards runners/joggers in general. Probably from people who struggle to run a bath, let alone run around their local park.

hamstersarse · 02/03/2021 21:13

Piers also needs to go for a run

hamstersarse · 02/03/2021 21:17

@GreenlandTheMovie

sub 40 minute 10k

That is impressive Envy

Winesalot · 02/03/2021 21:19

@MiddlesexGirl

Most pedestrians keep their distance, they don't pass by too close

They really don't. At least not round here. They move not one inch (many of them).

Not in my area either. Path beside small river is 2.5 m wide and rarely do walkers get over to the side. Those that do get a cheery wave from me as I run past on the extreme other side.

There are runners who pass too close to me when they overtake me. But the main people who won’t get over are walkers who walk 2 or more in a group.

Winesalot · 02/03/2021 21:22

And yes, if you are walking two abreast or even just by yourself but in the middle of the path, it doesn’t take much to look around on a path that is busy. If you are over to the side so people can pass easily, then that is different of course.
