AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

I'm not a massive fan of Morgan, but he was actually commenting on a scientist who suggested that joggers should wear masks.

Never, ever am I doing this.

MiddlesexGirl · 02/03/2021 18:17

@lljkk

Huff & Puff test before allowed to walk down the High Street. I.Have.Heard.It.All, now.
🤣
jerometheturnipking · 02/03/2021 18:18

Surely the occasional glance behind you when walking or running is only sensible, especially if you’re on a mixed use path or in a park. There will always be someone going faster than you and it’s just polite to let them past. People who are walking faster than you included. No need to get huffy because someone wants to walk past while your toddler is meandering along.

MiddlesexGirl · 02/03/2021 18:21

Devi Sridhar wants cyclists to wear them too. What kind of lunacy is this? How can a cyclist actually get within 2m of another person?

It's all posturing and fear mongering bullshit.
BabblativeBean · 02/03/2021 18:30

Kimye4eva: "But some walkers are not exercising. There can be no question that a runner is exercising. But I doubt very much whether some of the “walkers” I saw in my local park at the weekend we’re exercising. I’m talking about the people who were walking along whilst having a cigarette. Or who were sat on a picnic blanket reading a book. Or sat in a group on a bench drinking beer."

Eh? Why are you using people sitting on blankets or drinking beer while sitting benches to criticise "walkers". What if they'd run there? Would that make them "runners"? I don't understand!

UrAWizHarry · 02/03/2021 18:31

@MaddieElla

I too have just even extra observant on my run just now. Male walkers are generally friendly, say hello or give a quick smile. The women. Well. They mainly just scowl.

And it became clear to me why when you read the utter dross that is on this thread.

I've always found that significantly more men return my greetings when I pass them when out for a run. Male runners will almost always be friendly; females normally do the death glare straight ahead and ignore me. Take from that what you will..

Tandem? Imagine the risk that must involve.
SmokedDuck · 02/03/2021 18:32

It's not an evidence based recommendation, so no, people should not be required to do it.

MercyBooth · 02/03/2021 18:37

YY @rawalpindithelabrador A year ago we had never heard of them. Some are enjoying the fame and their new blue ticks

Of course the solution is an old Penny Farthing

I don't like taking advice from people on how to do sport when the person themselves isn't that good at the sport.

So I had a look for "Trish Greenhalgh" and variations of that name, on Power of Ten (which results all running times for reasonably proficient runners in the UK). Theres no mention of her. So I know that she doesn't run at the level I do and I don't therefore wish to take advice on how to run from her.

(Prof Greenhalgh, in the article states ""I've got a mask here and you can pull it up and pull it down and that takes two seconds to do."

"So wear it when you're going along, jogging on the high street. Take it off when you get to the parks, what I did this morning. It's not difficult."

Now, I'm not a scientist, but I am a lawyer, and I'm really concerned about this continual erosion of human rights. There should be a presumption against their erosion, not a culture of "I think this is a good idea" from yet another self-publicising scientist.

And actually, Professor Greenhalgh, it is difficult if you are running at any speed and not "jogging" as you call it. Its really difficult for asthmatics like me to breathe through masks.

And to be honest, by the time you've pulled that mask up and down on your sweaty face (because your face does get sweaty when you exert yourself wearing a mask), you're going to be spraying germs in all directions from the very act of doing so, rather than just quickly going past as you might normally do.

lljkk · 02/03/2021 18:43

Does Devi Shridar wear a mask when out running herself -- whyever not?

WHO recommend don't wear masks while doing aerobic exercise. But hey, they can't possibly know what they are talking about

And again, I don't think I'll be taking advice on how to exercise or stay fit for sport from Devi Sridhar. Devi Sridhar has an unusually detailed Wikipeadia entry, particularly the section on her education, part of which reads:

"Having received her bachelor's degree in biology at the age of 18, Sridhar became the youngest person in the US to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford.[11][13][14] At Oxford, Sridhar completed an MPhil in medical anthropology in 2005, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) degree in anthropology in 2006.[15][16] Her thesis analysed the effectiveness of the World Bank's effort to combat malnutrition in India.[3][17][18] During her doctorate, she spent eight months conducting fieldwork in India into malnutrition and infectious diseases, which would inform her first book.[13]"

"Sridhar turned down a funded position at Harvard Law School[14] to join the University of Oxford Global Economic Governance Programme in 2006, where she was awarded both MPhil and DPhil degrees.[3][17] She was inspired by her grandmother, who raised her children in the 1960s before completing her DPhil and writing several books.[14]"

No mention of any expertise in training for sport or coaching individuals.

@MeredithGreysScalpel

This fucks me right off. Why is it always runners who get the blame for ‘pavement hogging’?? I find quite the opposite - 3 times this morning I moved right to the edge of the pavement and the person I was trying to avoid stayed squarely in the middle, not giving an inch. So yes, I may well have been too close to them, but through no fault of my own.
Yes I've just been out for a run and had someone do this. Fortunately the road was quiet so I just went out into the road. But had a car come and I'd stuck to the path, no doubt he would have glared at me and gone home muttering about virus shedding joggers (I would imagine he'd been vaccinated anyway by his age).

Completely agree that I'd like to see more fuss made about harassment (another reason why we need parkrun back as it gives people, but women in particular, a safe space to run).

poppycat10 · 02/03/2021 18:55

@MyCatLovesFish

Not a fan of Piers Morgan but absolutely agree runners should be masked. Hate being trapped on narrow paths with them panting over the place and not SD because God forbid they might have to slow down - clue, if the path is so busy you can't ru unimpeded you should not be running. Pretty disgusting at any time but fucking inconsiderate and worse right now. You are not special just because you can jog round your local park.
No, if the path is so busy that you are scared to pass someone closer than 2m, whether they are running or not, don't use it.

Also I walk at some peoples' running pace so do I have to wear a mask when walking too? And conversely, are slow runners exempt in your view?

Happymum12345 · 02/03/2021 18:55

So many runners don’t move out of the way and it really annoys me. I always go in the road or stop running if someone is coming towards me.

lljkk · 02/03/2021 19:09

I dunno if other people or certain types of people move out of the way... I think it's me who moves out of way because I get a lot of completely unrequired Thank Yous which I think have to do with me moving out of the way. It's so easy to move out of the way. Anybody can do it. And then you don't have to wonder about other types of people who didn't move out of the way because YOU ALREADY DID it.

So many people don't move out the way. You get ignorant people in all shapes, sizes, ages and activities. Some drivers are morons and don't give way, but not all are. Some cyclists are twats but not all are some horse riders are pompous gits but not all are Some walkers expect others to move out of their way, but not all do ...and some runners dont move out of the way when it would be more considerate but not all are like that. (i imagine there is a lot of overlap in the catergories above!)
Daphnise · 02/03/2021 19:41

Runners are a nuisance in my area, and I agree they should wear masks- anything to make them feel uncomfortable, and lessen their entitled attitude.

99victoria · 02/03/2021 20:02

What a thoroughly unpleasant society we're becoming :(

ShowOfHands · 02/03/2021 20:08

I think cyclists hould have their seats replaced with a sharp spike. That'll learn 'em.

WTF are we becoming?
