AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

It’s the rule where I live, masks for all outdoor activities including running and outdoor exercise. You get can get a ticket if you don’t do it. It’s not that bad, I run in a neck gaiter which probably isn’t as good as a mask but can be pulled up and down so if it really bothers me I can’t pull it down when I am not near anyone. Doesn’t seem to bother anyone to do this

MH1111 · 02/03/2021 21:29

My iwatch measures how much huff and puff I’m exhaling.
It’s in settings/batshitcrazy

@jerometheturnipking

Surely the occasional glance behind you when walking or running is only sensible, especially if you’re on a mixed use path or in a park. There will always be someone going faster than you and it’s just polite to let them past. People who are walking faster than you included. No need to get huffy because someone wants to walk past while your toddler is meandering along.
I have been told on MN last year that it is unreasonable to expect people to look around and pay attention to who might be coming up behind them. Because it might be ruin the pleasant walk. Hmm

Frankly, if I am a lone female walker I am very attentive to who is coming up behind me as I am who is coming toward me. If I am running, i jog slowly three times a week. I am checking behind me as I swing across to the other side of the path to make sure I am not pulling out in front of another runner or cyclist.

I was always under the impression that everyone was supposed to take responsibility to make way for others using the paths. Ie. Keep to the left, if you are in a group fall to one half of path to let others past without having to be asked, etc. Seems not from this thread.

@Lovingspring

My relative in Victoria, Australia cannot understand why we don't have compulsory mask wearing outside.
I’m also in Victoria. Yes masks have been mandatory outside but not for runners or cyclists. I found most runners are courteous and give walkers a berth. In hard lockdown walkers wore masks everywhere outside once they’d stepped off their property so we were protected regardless of a runner not wearing a mask.

Because Covid transmission outdoors is an absolutely tiny risk. Not sure why it's relevant that your relative is in Australia either, are they a scientist with virus knowledge?

Obviously not a scientist then.

@Chloemol

I agree with Piers. My way runners don’t care, then run right up next to you, no running the other side of the run, and their hot sweaty puffy breath goes all over you

And he calls people snowflakes. Mental.

Dentistlakes · 02/03/2021 21:56

Everyone is entitled to use public spaces. All should be aware and courteous to each other. I often see walkers unwilling to walk in single file in order to give others room. On occasion I also see runners 2 abreast on narrow pavements and they are equally unreasonable. To be fair, cyclists are usually on the road unless they are young kids.

Personally, I’m it going to wear a mask whilst running as I rarely see anyone save another runner or a dog Walker in the distance. It’s so quiet I don’t have to pass near other people. On the rare occasion when I do, I cross over or come off the pavement. I never run close up behind people and 9/10 if I slow down enough they hear me and move over enough for me to pass safely. There are simply too many people using public spaces during the day at the moment as there’s nowhere else to go. I’m praying that changes when people go back to the office and there are shops/restaurants etc open up again. Living near a beach is becoming a nightmare for my neighbours because of the crowds driving miles to the area.

Seoirnbru · 02/03/2021 22:00

I agree that walkers often have much worse pavement etiquette here than runners. On a run the other week I stopped counting after the 20th time I stepped aside into the road or the verge for people coming the other way. Out of those 20 only 2 acknowledged me at all- and one was another runner. Not one group of walkers moved into single file/closer together. Even worse is a group coming out from a side path right in front of me, so I have to pull up sharp/run into traffic to stop barging into their backs. All the routes I have run for years are becoming almost impossible to run now - and like many I run for health reasons; it's brilliant for asthma so I don't want to stop.

whatchathinkaboutthat · 02/03/2021 22:03

I agree. I run daily and always wear a mask.

AlrightTreacle · 02/03/2021 22:11

I've worked in PPE throughout this and think that if they brought in mandatory masks outside now (not that I think it will happen), it would push me over the edge.

I do wear a snood when I run, which I pull up if I pass anyone, but as I run at night in quiet area this isn't very often. I can see how it would be harder in a busier area, but still feel that the risk of spreading/catching covid outside from a passerby is absolutely tiny.

lljkk · 02/03/2021 22:17

That comment invited stalking... PP is in Los Angeles.
Masks required outdoors when within 6' of other people -- not everywhere outdoors at all times.

This is frigging LA. Nobody walks in LA. It's pretty easy to be > 6' away from most people outdoors nearly all the time.

Spidder · 02/03/2021 22:21

I am also now sidetracked by the sub 40 min 10k. Envy my goal is a 25 minute 5k or a 50 minute 10k. I'm 2 minutes off 25 on a good day.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 02/03/2021 22:28

FFS!!!

NO ONE NEEDS TO WEAR A FACE COVERING OUTDOORS!!!

britinnyc · 02/03/2021 22:33

Actually not true about LA, I live by the beach with a crowded downtown area and a main path along the beach that is crowded all the time. The mask enforcers patrol and warn you or give tickets. It is raise to avoid running in a mask if you stick to side streets but running/waking/biking by the beach is the best part of living here so I suck it up abs wear a mask

islockdownoveryet · 02/03/2021 22:34

They won’t and can’t possibly enforce I know people enjoy saying they will .
Like people said we will have curfew with a piece of paper for permission to go out . Never happened yes other countries did but still they have thousands of deaths / cases so it didn’t work.
The chance of catching anything outside is so small it’s pointless. It can’t be enforced who’s going to report me ? Oh I saw a runner without a mask yes police turn up your gone .
I’ve said it further up thread it’s hysteria and this needs to stop .
I’d really like to see the evidence of cases of people that have caught Covid outside.
I’m not sure why people can’t just social distancing if you do that absolutely no need for a mask for everyone.

islockdownoveryet · 02/03/2021 22:35

@whatchathinkaboutthat

I agree. I run daily and always wear a mask.
Why ?
Lwoj · 02/03/2021 22:54

To the poster that commented that all runners should run in disused air fields and sports stadiums, why don’t you walk there instead?

Bigtom · 02/03/2021 23:03

I run regularly and don’t huff and puff any more than I do when walking briskly up a steep hill. I certainly never get close enough to huff and puff in someone’s face, not even when I’m running with someone. Some of the comments are very odd.

LucieStar · 02/03/2021 23:13

It's against WHO advice to wear a mask whilst running. So no, I won't be doing it. Madness.

likeamillpond · 03/03/2021 08:12

I'm going for a run later.
I'm damned if I'm getting up at the crack of dawn every morning just because walkers think I shouldn't be out there at the same time as them.
And I won't be wearing a mask.
Outdoors is for everyone.
Anyway, I doubt it will be law.
If I'm right Bojo likes to run. So I can't see him giving it any serious thought.

Dinnafashyersel · 03/03/2021 09:27

Yep Lucie. But then again Prof Trish recommends putting sanpro in your facemask to improve efficacy so she's not exactly mainstream on the consult an expert front.

IrmaFayLear · 03/03/2021 09:47

I suggested the airfields and running tracks in stadiums.

Why don’t I walk there? Because I walk along pavements - I go in single file, or step to the side if I encounter another pedestrian. I do not pound along, eyes fixed in the distance, weighed down by tech and I don’t power through people because I am doing fitness - which clearly some people on here puts them on a higher plane.

I’m sure there are many courteous runners, but just on this thread those who are not so polite have revealed themselves with such gems as people should give way to runners, they are superior because they aren’t obese (all walkers of course having BMIs of 50) and someone even said they shouted “runner coming through!” Wtf? If I had the nerve I’d reply “runner being a prat!”

And as for the “Olympic hopefuls” that we’re being mean to..... yep.

TheJerkStore · 03/03/2021 09:57

I suggested the airfields and running tracks in stadiums.

Absolutely ridiculous suggestion.
Not everyone lives near stadiums and airfields plus personally, i like running and walking while taking in the scenery. Running around a track is too much like running on a treadmill which I absolutely hate.
