Piers Morgan wants masks worn whilst running...

AIBU to think this is ridiculous?

@Aprilx

Exactly! but have a go at Piers Morgan instead of listening to highly qualified scientists who agreed with him - wear a mask whilst running in close proximity to others and take it off when in the park etc.

Prof Devi Shridar said she has altered her running route to avoid busier areas.

Tbh in my experience as a woman, it's male runners who are a bigger annoyance towards me than the female. They are the type who when waking would never move out of the way of other people or hold the door so that someone can pass first. Also I notice that the younger the runner, the more likely they are to be considerate. The young male footballers who I often cross paths with are very considerate compared to the middle aged men who are only interested in their fitness gadgets and never run at the edge of the path when there's enough space for people to go in both directions.

Snowwaiting · 02/03/2021 16:42

I run - I’m pretty slow and I definitely breath pretty heavily . I stay on muddy public footpaths and roads though and try and keep away from others ... it works both ways though and it would be nice if the pandemic walkers also tried to give me space - not many move at all . If I can’t give someone space I do try and cover my mouth and nose. I’ve had some abuse , I’ve even had a very scared masked mature lady have a go at my son ,who was crying as he’d fallen, to move out of her way ... she clearly didn’t want to walk single file herself . .

The main thing I’ve learnt in this pandemic is that people are selfish , they don’t like other people and they very definitely don’t like runners.

I can’t wear a mask running so if it does become a rule then I’ll just have to stop for now which will be one more unhealthy middle aged woman costing the NHS money.

NVision · 02/03/2021 16:58

Masks for runners only when all dogs are on leads and off lead in designated areas only

dreamingbohemian · 02/03/2021 17:05

Quite a few people on this thread seem to be assuming that only the runners are exercising, keeping fit, saving the NHS etc.

Walking is also exercise. A lot of walkers in the parks are also exercising. For a lot of people with health and mobility issues, walking is the only exercise they can do.

MercyBooth · 02/03/2021 17:10

Psychologically abusing the public is not a good move when
a. you want them to have the vaccine
b. you want their help to find the missing person with the Brazil variant

Some "journo" was asking about double masking at the press conference yesterday............KERCHING ££££££££££££££

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 02/03/2021 17:10

I agree with masks for runners and cyclists or even for walking. So many huffing and puffing whilst others use the exercise rule to socialise so no SD etc. If it was safe outdoors we wouldn’t have any need to ban outdoor mixing.

MrBullinaChinaShop · 02/03/2021 17:12

I’ve never seen the phrase ‘huffing and puffing’ in my life before as much as I have on this thread.

gurglebelly · 02/03/2021 17:17

Having had a runner coming towards me huff directly into my face the other day (I stepped aside but he turned his bloody head towards me!!) I agree with Piers (for the first time ever)

So 1 jogger breaths near you and now you think they should all wear masks . It could of been a pedestrian but no let’s blame all the joggers .
MiddlesexGirl · 02/03/2021 17:27

Just back from a run. Definitely the walkers doing the pavement hogging here. I'm always happy to hop into the road but will they move across at all? No. Will the two-three-four abreast drop down to one or two? No.

And a comment to the snidey remarks about fitness gadgets - they're a fantastic motivator and tracker of how well you're doing and when to up your exercise to the next level. I don't think I would have stuck to my routine without one.

islockdownoveryet · 02/03/2021 17:30

To even entertain this for a nano second people really have lost their minds .
You cannot exercise with a mask on even brisk walking is difficult.
Exercise has huge benefits in building you immune system & fighting viruses Covid included . Piers Morgan knows jack shit!! perhaps just just use a bit of common sense and don’t run down busy high streets is a much better idea then insisting joggers wear masks . Hmm

Those 'highly qualified' scientists are talking shite.

Outside transmission is incredibly rare and requires extended contact between an infected person and a non-infected target.

It is simply impossible for a infected runner to transmit a large enough viral load to infect someone when running past them, and it's irresponsible to both encourage mask wearing during exercise and to potentially discourage people from taking steps to improve their health.

gurglebelly · 02/03/2021 17:32

Most pedestrians keep their distance, they don't pass by too close (despite having a whole fucking path, and us stepped into the mud, he couldn't bring himself to move over even a metre) and don't leave your sunglasses (and therefore one can only assume your whole face) splattered in droplets as they violently exhale in your direction.

This was the most recent (and extreme) example but by no means an isolated incident.

Sadly most runners in our local area appear to be arseholes as a lot of them do it (that's not to say ALL runners are arseholes)

So, yes 🤷‍♀️

gurglebelly · 02/03/2021 17:35

@enjoyingscience

Never felt the breath of a runner ever. Not even doing a parkrun or something, where there are lots in close proximity. You’d surely have to be practically shagging to actually feel someone’s breath 😂
Lots of people in close proximity, running in the same direction...
MiddlesexGirl · 02/03/2021 17:51

Order of priority for stopping/passing is for me first about safety and unpredictability and then about convenience and disruption to journey. So priority-wise it would be something like -

animals being herded
horses
children
runners
cyclists
walkers
buses
cars
lorries

With adjustments .... so as a walker I'd step aside for a car if not to do so would cause undue delay.

As a runner, having to stop isn't about 'spoiling my time', it's about a disruption to the rhythm. If it has to be done then it has to be done but it's always nicer to run without interruption.

MaddieElla · 02/03/2021 17:52

I too have just even extra observant on my run just now. Male walkers are generally friendly, say hello or give a quick smile. The women. Well. They mainly just scowl.

And it became clear to me why when you read the utter dross that is on this thread.

They really don't. At least not round here. They move not one inch (many of them).

That's also true. Except of me Grin I'll always give a cheery smile and hello.
MaddieElla · 02/03/2021 17:54

Nor round here. Why move to the side when you can remain firmly planted in the centre of the footpath.

MH1111 · 02/03/2021 18:02

What about obese people that walk up inclines, they huff and puff 🤷‍♂️
Morbidly obese walking on level ground huff and puff too
If we make runners wear masks surely they should too?

lljkk · 02/03/2021 18:06

Huff & Puff test before allowed to walk down the High Street.
I.Have.Heard.It.All, now.

You are right, a lot of walkers are also exercising. I can only run once a week otherwise an old injury flares up so I have to walk on other days.

But some walkers are not exercising. There can be no question that a runner is exercising. But I doubt very much whether some of the “walkers” I saw in my local park at the weekend we’re exercising. I’m talking about the people who were walking along whilst having a cigarette. Or who were sat on a picnic blanket reading a book. Or sat in a group on a bench drinking beer.

MH1111 · 02/03/2021 18:11

Its all about the huff and puff lljkk

I forgot to include people walking whilst carrying heavy items including shopping. Surely if they are huffing and puffing too a mask is required?
