AIBU or should hot cross buns only be the original flavour?

I can’t be doing with rhubarb & custard, salted caramel, honeycomb etc etc. Just stick to the original!

HCB, dried fruit - no thanks!

But yes please to salted caramel, or chocolate and orange!!

EBearhug · 28/02/2021 13:49

I'm shocked that someone thought Welsh cakes could have chocolate chips in. That is very Wrong.

I'm glad to see people with the correct view of cinnamon, though. Ginger, cloves and nutmeg are the way forward.

bearlyactive · 28/02/2021 15:04

Oh my God, now I need to go to Aldi or M&S to find some of these salted caramel/chocolate/honeycomb ones. M&S is nearer. But it's not an essential journey. Damn.

AtSwimTwoBerts · 28/02/2021 15:29

Salted caramel, apple & cranberry etc are not hot cross buns, they are just buns

Do they have crosses on? Are they served hot? Yep, well shut up then.

Of course they bloody are!

Karmakarmachameleon · 28/02/2021 15:33

I’m with you OP. Original flavour only. Anyone who buys these new flavoured ones (especially salted caramel) is clearly a pervert.

Mysterian · 28/02/2021 15:39

Some of the flavours are nice but to me you can't beat the originals. So tasty that if they were available 2000 years ago they would have tempted Jesus down off his cross.

EternalOptimist7 · 28/02/2021 18:48

Mysterian that’s possibly offensive to some but very funny! 🤣

I like the varieties as they are more likely to be dairy and egg free than original ones

lazylinguist · 28/02/2021 19:02

YABU. As long as they taste nice, who cares? You eat the original ones that you like, everyone else can eat whichever ones they like. Booths do all sorts of delicious variations. We like the fudge and Belgian chocolate ones! Dd hates dried fruit, so she likes being able to eat hot cross buns now that there are other kinds available.

ineedaholidaynow · 28/02/2021 19:04

I love the Waitrose toffee ones as they don't have dried fruit in, can't stand dried fruit

Same here. No overcooked currants or disgusting candied peel.
Dontsayfuckorbugger · 02/03/2021 01:46

Agreed. Original only in this house. Toasted with butter. Yum

GreenSlide · 02/03/2021 02:31

The older I get the more I appreciate Easter. Shove your pumpkin spiced stuff and winter woolies of Halloween, the best time of year is the start of sunny days, daffodils, Easter eggs and hot cross buns 🐣

picknmix1984 · 02/03/2021 02:52

I've compared M&S apple and sultana to Waitrose equivalent. M & S win hands down.

Reinventinganna · 02/03/2021 02:53

Heston Blumenthal‘s Earl grey ones are delicious. I haven’t been able to eat a plain one ever since.

Crikeycroc · 02/03/2021 03:11

You are being a hot cross bun purist.
