AIBU or should hot cross buns only be the original flavour?

I can’t be doing with rhubarb & custard, salted caramel, honeycomb etc etc. Just stick to the original!

I’d forgotten about the M&S chili and cheese ones. They don’t seem to be available on Ocado. The chocolate ones are amazing. So much better than some Tesco chocolate ones I tried last year.

gurglebelly · 27/02/2021 22:44

Eurgh got sent some triple berry nastiness as a substitute for normal hot cross buns in the shopping 🤢

YADNBU

TheKeatingFive · 28/02/2021 07:25

I’m eyeing up the M&S salted caramel ones - and I reckon I’ll cope 😊

ListenLinda · 28/02/2021 07:29

I got some salted caramel ones last year, can’t remember where from. They were amazing. Will be on the look out now they are coming back into the shops!

Justgivemesomepeace · 28/02/2021 07:32

YANBU i picked up mocha ones by mistake from morrisons. I only realised by the smell when i opened the packet. Awful.

MiloAndEddie · 28/02/2021 07:34

YABU I bloody hate dried fruit! Tbf id be happy to have them plain, without fruit because I like spices but that isn’t an option 😭

CherryMaple · 28/02/2021 07:40

The M&S blueberry ones are wonderful. Delicious warm, but also lovely and soft if you prefer them cold.

I’m going to have to try the Aldi rhubarb ones. Love rhubarb.

speakout · 28/02/2021 07:41

Let people buy what they want.

I love the original, this amazing Easter treat which is actually pagan - pre christian in origin.

SillyLittleBiscuit · 28/02/2021 07:42

M&S marmite ones are amazing.
I don’t eat original ones.

OfTheNight · 28/02/2021 07:48

YABU just because of the M&S salted caramel ones which are utterly LUSH and are currently the delicious thread by which my sanity hangs since giving up vaping!

You know that's not how mumsnet works Grin

YANBU. I run a food bank that gets a lot of supermarket excess stock and from Feb through about May we’re inundated with chilli/Marmite/rhubarb etc hot cross buns. I don’t think they’re wildly popular with customers.

startrek90 · 28/02/2021 10:34

Really jealous of all of you. I live overseas and I can't get ANY hot cross buns. Last year I made some from Mary berry and they were good. This year I am trying Paul Hollywoods recipe which has apples in.... I also had to rig up my own version of mixed spice as you can't but that here either. Very jealous about rhubarb and custard and salted caramel..... (though in hindsight it is probably good for my waistline)

Lynora · 28/02/2021 10:43

The tesco salted caramel and chocolate chip ones are really strange. I think I prefer fruity ones but I would give the chilli and cheese ones from M & S a good go.

BigPaperBag · 28/02/2021 12:11

Original all the way. I had a rank strawberry and cream one recently 🤮🤮

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 28/02/2021 12:18

@JGACC

Another fan of the m&s marmite and cheese buns here. Although still not impressed with their changing room policy so I think I need to get baking!
They don't force you to eat them in the changing rooms! 🤣

I don't think they're about to change their policy whether you buy a couple of packets of HCB's or not.

FuckingFabulous · 28/02/2021 12:19

Nobody should have them, ever. I've recently discovered that if you don't like something, nobody else should have it or they risk offending you and that's virtually a hate crime.

I can't eat them. I have coeliac disease and the gluten free ones are disgusting. I miss them. I mourn them. So, nobody should have them. You should all be living a bunless existence with me.

CovidCrow · 28/02/2021 12:24

@modgepodge

My dad had some last week which were lemon curd flavour...bloody delicious. Like a normal HCB but better. Think they were M&s. I had salter caramel chocolate ones yesterday, which I enjoyed, but I do accept are very different to actual HCBs.
Oooh lemon curd you say? Yum.

Tesco's strawberry and white chocolate ones are lovely.

Gastropod · 28/02/2021 12:42

YADNBU! They are just perfect as they are, and any weird variations are just not as good as the original.

Not to mention the fact that M&S in a recent promo email were going on about "Hot Cross Bun season" being nearly here... er, you mean Easter?

PS @startrek90 the Paul H recipe is good (a bit faffy and I'm not sure what the apples bring but I put them in anyway) - the end result is excellent!

bruffin · 28/02/2021 12:45

Ee have M&S apple, chocolate and marmite delivered yesterday
Dh has eaten 3 apple ones, ds will toast the marmite for lunch and ds and i will fight over the chocolate ones

luckylavender · 28/02/2021 12:45

Do you think people said similar things about ice cream when it branched out from vanilla? Wink

VestaTilley · 28/02/2021 13:24

Agree. They also should only be eaten on Good Friday (dons hard hat Grin)

Eleganz · 28/02/2021 13:26

After having some apple and cinnamon ones because they were on the reduced aisle YANBU.

EBearhug · 28/02/2021 13:27

I agree. Hot cross buns come only in the original spiced flavour.

Salted caramel, apple & cranberry etc are not hot cross buns, they are just buns

This. The other flavours may be good, but they're not Hot Cross Buns.

RestingPandaFace · 28/02/2021 13:30

YABU original one always have cinnamon Envy(not envy)
