AIBU or should hot cross buns only be the original flavour?

I can’t be doing with rhubarb & custard, salted caramel, honeycomb etc etc. Just stick to the original!

The M&S apple ones are divine.

kowari · 27/02/2021 17:55

If you don't like them don't buy them. You'd have a point if you couldn't buy the original, but why shouldn't variations be available for those who prefer them or just want some variety?

katy1213 · 27/02/2021 17:57

I saw rum and raisin yesterday - I suppose they might be better than chocolate/orange which were yeuuggh when I tried them last year - wouldn't have bothered except they were reduced to 10p a packet.
Even the original variety are a forlorn shadow of proper sticky bakers' buns.

ShinyMe · 27/02/2021 17:58

I would agree, but the Aldi rhubarb and custard ones are amazing. I froze 10 packets of them last Easter and had some all through the year. I ran out just after Christmas, so now they're back I am HAPPY.

Chocolate ones though, yuk.

I've seen chilli cheese ones - anyone recommend them? They sound... odd.

thepeopleversuswork · 27/02/2021 17:58

I can't abide them in any flavour so you can have them all.

ShinyMe · 27/02/2021 17:58

@BoreOfWhabylon

YANBU

Furthermore, they should only be consumed on Good Friday!

Oh yes, my mother insists on the being only for Good Friday. Sod that, I eat them through February and March.
PatriciaHolm · 27/02/2021 17:58

I've just discovered M&S Cheese and Marmite.

Yum.

Sexnotgender · 27/02/2021 18:00

I for one hate dried fruit so welcome something I can eat.

If you don’t like it don’t eat them. I’m assuming no one is holding you down and force feeding you.

raskolnikova · 27/02/2021 18:01

@Chimeraforce

Oh no, I love the co-op brioche choc chip ones. They are amazing.
These have been my favourite lockdown discovery.

OP is so unreasonable.

WanderingMilly · 27/02/2021 18:02

I didn't realise they came in different flavours (should get out more!), picked up a pack of hot cross buns from my local supermarket and was devastated when I got home to find they were bloody salted caramel. Gave them to my neighbour. I shall look more carefully next time.

Serin · 27/02/2021 18:03

I'm heartbroken not to live near an M and S.
Chilli and cheese flavour sounds amazing.

Solina · 27/02/2021 18:04

I bought M&S salted caramel and chocolate ones and didn't really like them because the spices were still the same in the actual bun part and I am not not sure it goes with non fruit flavours. But the various different fruit ones have always been good!

modgepodge · 27/02/2021 18:05

My dad had some last week which were lemon curd flavour...bloody delicious. Like a normal HCB but better. Think they were M&s. I had salter caramel chocolate ones yesterday, which I enjoyed, but I do accept are very different to actual HCBs.

ScottChegg · 27/02/2021 18:05

I used to agree with this sentiment, then a few years ago Tesco did some mini toffee and banana flavoured ones which I bought for the kids, since they were heathen with unsophisticated palates. I tried one and had to admit, they were actuallyvery nice. Shock

Obviously, since I liked them, they never appeared again after that year.

honeylulu · 27/02/2021 18:07

The Waitrose toffee ones are amazing! We just call them "buns" though. When I say Hot Cross Buns I mean the traditional ones. When I make them at Easter though I do add some cardamom and orange zest...

JGACC · 27/02/2021 18:19

Another fan of the m&s marmite and cheese buns here. Although still not impressed with their changing room policy so I think I need to get baking!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/02/2021 18:22

Yanbu. You can't improve on a traditional hot cross bun.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 27/02/2021 18:23

I wasn't overly impressed with the cheese and marmite ones. I mean they were tasty, but may as well have had a cheese roll with marmite in.
DS1 loves hot cross buns in all varieties (except marmite or chilli).
DS2 won't touch anything with dried fruit in.
So I just "had" to buy 2 packs and share them Grin

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 27/02/2021 18:28

Original flavour, roasted and buttered all the way

Dunairbeanat · 27/02/2021 18:28

Totally agree OP, original only.
I once accidentally picked up Welsh cakes with chocolate chips, they were terrible.

Exhausted4ever · 27/02/2021 18:45

Yabvu, the other flavours are way better than the original ones. Though chilli and cheese? What?! They are meant to be sweet!

fruitpastille · 27/02/2021 19:17

Aldi has chilli and cheese plus other flavours. I wouldn't mind but they were all piled by the checkout and they didn't have any proper ones at all!

Elledouble · 27/02/2021 19:20

YABU. The cheese and chilli and cheese and marmite ones are delicious Grin

Kpo58 · 27/02/2021 19:20

Sainsbury's do cheese and tomato ones. Confused

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 27/02/2021 19:22

The waitrose apple ones are great.

Sainsburys do some with lingonberries that the kids and I are less fussed about.
