Demi Lovato on gender reveal parties

Don't really have an opinion on gender reveal parties. Didn't have one myself despite finding out the gender, but each to their own. Live and let live etc.

Demi Lovato reckons they're transphobic. Surely I'm not being unreasonable to think that calling anyone who wants to celebrate their babys gender transphobic, is utterly ridiculous

Demi thinks heroin's a good idea.
I wouldn't worry about her views on parenting.

Goodytoshoes · 27/02/2021 09:59

True! Not so much worries about her views per se, more so concerned that people actually think this way lol

Gender is a social construct based on stereotypes that you can't see from a scan. Maybe if they were renamed as 'sex reveal parties' everyone would be happy?

Cocomarine · 27/02/2021 10:00

Absolutely cannot be arsed with a link.

I definitely wouldn’t say it’s transphobic. I would say that a parent might like to consider that it isn’t always a case of looking at genitals and making a correct announcement.

But mostly I’d say - fuck off with the attention seeking nonsense of a gender reveal anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️

CodenameVillanelle · 27/02/2021 10:02

'Gender' reveal parties are actually sex reveal parties. Attaching gender to new borns is definitely harmful and irritating but the 'reveal' is whether they are male or female. It has fuck all to do with transphobia.

Owwlie · 27/02/2021 10:02

This is ridiculous.

But saying that, I agree that calling them ‘sex reveal parties’ or ‘sex revealing scans’ would stop stupidity like this. As you can’t argue that babies are born either male or female sex. But I think most people would be uncomfortable using ‘sex’ rather than ‘gender’ which is daft, although ‘sex reveal parties’ does sound like something very different! It’s just an attention-seeking post really.

Liquorishtoffee · 27/02/2021 10:04

Sex apart - there have been forest fires, injury and death as a result of the ‘need’ to announce to the world the sex of your unborn child. I think they are just daft.

And I’ve seen ‘gender reveal’ for older children and even adults...

yetanotherusernameAgain · 27/02/2021 10:06

It's not surprising. TRAs object to gender (sex) being "assigned at birth" so it follows that they'll object to gender being assigned before birth.

I recently asked on the Feminism Chat board if anyone had come across TRAs lobbying against gender reveal parties - maybe this is the start?

BrumBoo · 27/02/2021 10:07

Well, it's true you can't see a child's 'gender' as much as you can't determine if they're a religious, Flat Earther or Jedi from a ultrasound. It's certainly not 'transphobic' though, just silly immature adults can't refer to the child's sex as what it is.

I really dont think she's the sort of person who's opinion could be taken seriously though, shame many young people look up to her.

Liquorishtoffee · 27/02/2021 10:10

Always pink and blue though isn’t it...

ToadsThePeanutButterSnob · 27/02/2021 10:13

I think she's having another episode.

FlumpetCrumpet · 27/02/2021 10:15

When you boil it down it's basically throwing a party to tell people whether you saw a penis or labia. I'm all for parties (and would definitely go to a gender reveal party if I was ever invited to one) but I suppose genital reveal party doesn't have quite the same ring to it, although it might make the balloons more fun.

So I suppose it depends on what the party actually represents
A- any excuse for a bbq and a piss up and a dong or lack thereof on a scan is as good an excuse as any, who knows what our child will be like regardless of their sex
B- we are gathering people together to tell them whether they need to stock up on footballs and guns or dollies and play ironing boards because we don't want our child being confused and ending up catching the gay

I suspect 90% of gender reveal parties fall into category A

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 27/02/2021 10:15

You never know if she's lucid or not so I would take it with a pinch of salt.

Liquorishtoffee · 27/02/2021 10:16

So is this as well as or in place of a baby shower?

TheUndoingProject · 27/02/2021 10:19

The comments about her struggles with mental health and addiction on this thread are a bit grim.

You can disagree with someone without making light of mental illness.

partyatthepalace · 27/02/2021 10:22

I think Demi is just having another episode / trying to drum up publicity / burbling... in this context I don’t think she really ‘thinks’ anything.

Although they are naff (IMO).

Of course they're not transphobic, what an utter load of shite. They are however cringey and also bloody dangerous - who knew?!

It’s sex, not gender. Two sexes, male and female.

DynamoKev · 27/02/2021 10:39

I had to google Demi Lovato. I am very old.

Gender reveal parties are surely an idea that started in the USA, and they were called gender because of the Americans general prissiness about calling things by their actual name (see also "passed" because it's now illegal just to say died).

I liked Charlie Brooker's annual thing this year where one of the fictional characters was a bloke making money in the gig economy by DJing at non-binary gender reveal parties.

GabsAlot · 27/02/2021 10:40

its not transphobic no-the parties are highly annoying and stupid though

Liquorishtoffee · 27/02/2021 10:46

In which case naming your child is also...
