To remind myself of how hot the last 2 UK summers were

Ok, we've just emerged from a long winter, and holidays abroad seem attractive.
But it is easy to forget how lovely the weather was during the last 2 summers in the UK.
And think, why go abroad this summer ? Crowded airports and planes etc.
Yes holidays here can be expensive, but we're thinking of lots of day trips, exploring places we haven't been to before.

We are not going abroad this year. We are going next February for some winter sun.

I'm looking forward to some day trips and hopefully a week in Norfolk this summer!

pepsicolagirl · 27/02/2021 07:53

Yup same thought process here. Maybe some weekends away and a lot of day trips is the plan here.

Covidcorvid · 27/02/2021 07:55

It was so hot last summer when I was away in my caravan the glue holding the door veneers melted and I had to sellotape my doors together! It was 32 degrees most days. Obviously I was lucky with the week I was away but hoping for similar again. Or at least dry!

Saywhatyoumeanandmeanwhatyousa · 27/02/2021 07:55

I hate the hot weather and I'm dreading another hot summer ☹️

devildeepbluesea · 27/02/2021 07:56

We have a week in Devon booked for June. Not going to stress about abroad, but may go away for a city break or a long weekend at short notice, if all looks good.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 27/02/2021 07:57

I don't know anything about long range weather forecasts for this summer, are they predicting another hot one?

Past weather is no guide to the future Grin

LarsErickssong · 27/02/2021 08:07

Yup I keep thinking this but then again it will be bloody typical and piss it down all summer this year I bet.

Meadowland · 27/02/2021 08:09

@AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair
You're right, nothing is guaranteed but I think warmer weather is predicted globally in the future.

I think warmer weather is predicted globally in the future.

An upward general trend doesn’t mean this summer is guaranteed good weather. It’s also predicted there will be more extreme weather events, so there could be a freak very cold summer.

MrBullinaChinaShop · 27/02/2021 08:21

Our family live abroad, so we don’t want a holiday for the sun, we want it to see our family who we haven’t seen for 15 months now.
And flights to see them for the 5 of us are cheaper than a week in a caravan in Suffolk.

Cam2020 · 27/02/2021 08:21

You'd also be supporting our much stricken economy and businesses.

RampantIvy · 27/02/2021 08:22

I don't know where you live, but 2019 was not a hot summer where I live (South Yorkshire). We had a few hot days, but that was among mainly cool, grey weather.

Last year was better, but July was still cool and rainy.

Hardbackwriter · 27/02/2021 08:23

Last three summers, at least? Big heatwave in 2018 (I remember this very definitely because I was heavily pregnant in it and then had a newborn who wore nothing but a nappy for weeks!)

speakout · 27/02/2021 08:23

I wouldn't dream of going abroad this year.

Too risky. Virus numbers could spike here or abroad, quarantine regulations may come into force with little notice- here or abroad.
Airline and holiday companies are in a fragile economic situation and could go bust leaving holidaymakers stranded.

Lots of unknowns.

MargosKaftan · 27/02/2021 08:24

It was glorious for the majority of the summer in most of the UK last year and the year before. However, for the last 2 summers there have been at least a couple of crap weeks. And weeks when say, the east of the UK is baking, but its been pissing it down on the western side.

Every year at least one friend is doing a "grin and bare it" holiday in the rain in Devon/Cornwall/Wales with posts on Facebook of them on the beach in coats. (Usually followed by it being paddling pool weather the week they get back)

UK holidays can be lovely, but assume you won't get the weather and if its dry that's great. UK tourist destinations will be crowded too. (Particularly if its raining/a bit cold)

Swimmum78 · 27/02/2021 08:26

We are planning a uk holiday this year... which means it will definitely piss it down! Grin

eatsleepread · 27/02/2021 08:28

I'm in Scotland. I'll be going abroad if I can. (holiday rolled on from 2 years ago, firstly for having booked with Thomas Cook, and then Covid).

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 27/02/2021 08:31

Yep, months of hot weather last year. We changed our holiday abroad for a week in Devon in August. It was the one week it rained pretty much all week! I was gutted, the teenagers were disappointed after dreaming of lazing on the beach BBQing or eating fish and chips, body boarding etc (it wasn't safe to bodyboard). It sucked.

We're hoping our transferred postponed holiday abroad can happen 🤞🏻

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 27/02/2021 08:31

Nope. I’m off abroad as soon as I can. I for one haven’t forgotten how many locals in tourist spots carried on over the last year. It would’ve been ok if they had been polite in their requests for people not to come to their areas but it became very pitchforky and they appeared to have a particular issue with Londoners so I’ll take my money elsewhere.

Not going anywhere I’m resented just because of where I come from.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 27/02/2021 08:32

We do plan to go to Scotland though. Love it up there.

Caramel81 · 27/02/2021 08:33

It reached 38 degrees in Derbyshire on my birthday last August. It was so hot outside that we found it unbearable and had to go home early from our picnic that day. I’m sure last year there were people dying in Madrid from the heat there

We had a week in Devon last august and it pissed it down for the whole week! Not easy to entertain a 6, 4 and 1 year old in the rain for a week.

I’d tolerate all those risks if it means I get to see my family in the first time for what will be nearly 2 years by then.
user88899 · 27/02/2021 08:42

Because you can't predict when the hot weather is coming, yes we've had several weeks of lovely weather the last couple years, but largely interspersed with shite weather making it impossible to book in advance. Also, the UK isn't set up for it when we do get the hot weather. I'd much rather book somewhere I know will be hot, I know will have air conditioning and all inclusive cocktails Grin I also like a complete change of scenery, we did Isle of Wight last year, was lovely, but it just doesn't compare to a Greek island for me. We are booked to go abroad in August, booked pre pandemic, I really hope we can go, if not we will rebook for next year, I'd rather save the money than book an expensive UK break that never quite hits the spot.

doctorhamster · 27/02/2021 08:48

Just as a heads up, it'll be pissing it down and freezing in Devon from 7th August for a week because I'll be on holiday there.
