To ask nursery to cut their grapes into quarters?

AliceTheCamelHasFiveHumps · 24/02/2021 23:32

So, DD14m attends nursery.

They give fruit snacks out each day.

They cut grapes in half lengthwise. (I know this for gross reasons 😷)

I tend to do quarters for safety, as per advice.

AIBU to ask them to cut the grapes into quarters??? Or am I being precious 🥺😳

Yep I used to say mine were allergic!
I also tell them they aren’t allowed grapes at school. They know my worries about grapes so would never eat them unless
I was there! And they are 9, 5,4

Enola41 · 26/02/2021 17:54

Not being unreasonable at all, especially as she's only 14 Months old. I cut them up into qtrs for ages and still cut them in half for my DD at 7. I've heard of so many awful (and genuine) stories about the dangers of keeping grapes whole from others.

Lt85 · 26/02/2021 17:54

At our nursery grapes are always in quarters and children closely monitored to ensure no sharing of foods.

isadorapolly · 26/02/2021 17:54

My kids have grapes every day and the oldest 3 I didn’t even cut them in half as for some reason I didnt realise I was supposed to 🤷🏻‍♀️

I cut them in half lengthways and as far as I know that’s safe. To those posters who say their kids have never even tasted grapes, WTF Confused

Skymum82 · 26/02/2021 17:55

Always cut mine into quarters, school and pre school have a lot of children to look after. I remember being annoyed that my daughters special need school had a tick shop once a week and sold whole grapes. The only reason I knew was because it was a transition day so I spent the morning with her. School didn't care, I had to ask her not to buy them ever and trust she didn't. She is a choker and so are many kids with sen. They were running around the play ground with them too 🤦🏼‍♀️.
It doesn't take a minute.

UntamedWisteria · 26/02/2021 17:58

Grapes are out of season.

They shouldn't be having them at all.

CallmeBadJanet · 26/02/2021 18:02

@AliceTheCamelHasFiveHumps Quarters are a choking hazard, a child would cough up a half grape, quarter grape would get stuck

We don’t live in the 1950s so actually you can eat them whenever you want.

Don’t move to Spain. People think it’s lucky here to stuff as many grapes in your mouth as possible. No one cuts up grapes for children.

So why does the NHS advise to cut into quarters?

NurseMumMe · 26/02/2021 18:14

Grapes, large blueberries, cherry tomatoes, sausages , nuts etc present a particular choking hazard.

All the fruit should be cut up.

For grapes the advice is halved but in fact half a grape is often still an awful slippery / airway sized lump of a child chokes. Quarters do reduce risk further.

Better safe than sorry !

If you think quartered grapes are a choking hazard then you might like to share your wisdom with the authors of this BMJ report highlighting grapes as a choking hazard:

... grapes are widely consumed throughout the UK and beyond. By way of this article, we mean to highlight the need for clear labelling of foods known to be choking hazards, with succinct advice that such should be chopped in half and ideally quartered before being given to young children (≤5 years), and reiteration of the importance of adult supervision of small children while they are eating.

niugboo · 26/02/2021 18:17

The official advice is halves not quarters. Yes quarters optimal but way too precious.

Snaketime · 26/02/2021 18:18

The NHS advise is cut in half lengthways, but you can cut into quarters for small babies

Localocal · 26/02/2021 18:19

I think this is a perfectly reasonable request.

Tessabelle74 · 26/02/2021 18:21

I quarter mine but it depends on the size of the grape, small ones would be ok in half and fiddly to pick up if in quarters

So because they are happy with stupidity we should be too? The skin of a grape and the size of one makes it extremely challenging to dislodge should it be swallowed whole, it's not that much of a hardship to cut them up.
Boysnme · 26/02/2021 18:23

@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows

And for those thinking they're precious - my kids are 5 and 8 and I still cut up their grapes Grin
Mine are 9 & 11 and I still do it too 🤦‍♀️
Pixie2015 · 26/02/2021 18:24

I let my 13y old eat whole grapes this week but I was watching them closely!

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 26/02/2021 18:25

I think halves are fine.

Any food is a potential choking hazard - the end if sausages is another one and has made me decidedly uncomfortable at parties watching kids career around eating them.

Mine are 13 and 12 and I make sure they break them in half first still
QuestionableMouse · 26/02/2021 18:31

I've choked on a grape and I'm 35. You bite them wrong and they shoot down your throat. Was really scary especially because I was alone.

I don't eat them now.

CovidHalloween · 26/02/2021 18:32

I did a family first aid course few years and they advised on cutting the grapes. Some grapes are even still massive even after halving them. I think some need to be quartered without having any second thought especially for toddlers.

Peff68 · 26/02/2021 18:34

Best reply ever! Smile

I must add we once went nursery viewing and one nursery we visited was serving their afternoon fruit snack straight on the table. It was a two year old room.
We were not impressed. Children need to learn table manners and eating off a plate. I’m surprised they dont train nursery teachers on basic food hygiene like serving food on a plate. Pretty disgusting.
