Dp knows his by heart and I don’t. I have no idea! Which he thinks is pretty bad of me, I mean it probably is. But he’s panicking me saying I need to find out just in case I need to know. Aibu to think this is a bit ott?

is it normal not to know it?

How do I find it out? Are they in the red books given out when babies! I’m sure dm probably still has mine!

I don't know mine.

jendifer · 23/02/2021 18:11

I only know from when I’ve given blood.

Fizzgigg · 23/02/2021 18:11

I only found out mine when I was pregnant for the first time, aged 36

Snap!

Go and donate then they'll tell you. If you're O Neg in particular they will be so grateful.

DogsSausages · 23/02/2021 18:12

Your blood group is not routinely tested unless you are a donor, having an operation or need a transfusion. Does your mum know?. Have you got children or ever had blood tests.

emmathedilemma · 23/02/2021 18:13

I never knew mine until I gave blood a few years ago and I can't say I remember what it was! Why do you need to know?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/02/2021 18:13

I found out when I started donating blood.

LizzieBirmingham · 23/02/2021 18:14

Go and give blood - you’ll find out and do a good deed all at once.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/02/2021 18:14

I'll be able to go and donate again soon actually, so thank you for the reminder to book!

VinterKvinna · 23/02/2021 18:14

Knows his by heart? Its 1/2 letters, followed by a +/-, not pi to the 137th digit

NoCherryNoDeal · 23/02/2021 18:14

You can get a home test kit. I got mine for free when I signed up at blood.co.uk. It’s not easy though. You have to prick yourself, drop blood on 4 different squares to see what pattern your blood makes.

midnightstar66 · 23/02/2021 18:15

I saw a post elsewhere today about this. I'm shocked how many people don't have a clue about their or their DC's blood group. Surely this is standard info that you should know?

Brunt0n · 23/02/2021 18:16

Your partner sounds weird.
Is he planning to remove your kidney while you sleep and sell it on the dark web? Why would he care? It’s not information that you need to know and knowing it would make no difference if you required medical treatment.

ThreeTwoOneBlastOff · 23/02/2021 18:17

I only know from being pregnant, why would you need to know otherwise? In an emergency situation you would be given O neg as it’s the universal donor. And you would always be cross matched regardless of knowing.

It’s not something that is routinely tested.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 23/02/2021 18:17

I only learned mine when I saw my birth certificate aged about 20. It was on the cert, though I don't think all of them have it?

I've never needed to use the information.

TreaterAnita · 23/02/2021 18:18

Why does he think you would you need to know? If you need an emergency transfusion they will always give you O neg rather than taking your word for it, and if you need a routine transfusion they’ll type you first anyway.

Marlena1 · 23/02/2021 18:18

I only saw it recently when I looked at my labour notes from 2 years ago. I'm 38.

nocoolnamesleft · 23/02/2021 18:18

If you get pregnant, and thus need to know, it will be tested. If you are injured, and need a blood transfusion, they would totally ignore anyone telling them what group they thought they were, and it will be tested.

So why on earth would you need to know?

How do you know your dc blood group if they have never had a blood test? I've never thought about it, but I don't know my dc blood group

speakout · 23/02/2021 18:19

I only found out when I had my first pregnancy- isn't it in your notes OP?
I know they test for a range of things, incluing blood group at your booking in, they need to check your Rhesus factor and find out your blood group in case you need a transfusion when youo are giving birth.

31RooCambon · 23/02/2021 18:20

What country puts blood group on the birth cert??

ThreeTwoOneBlastOff · 23/02/2021 18:21

Surely this is standard info that you should know?

Why? We don’t take your word for it in hospital, and as I said previously in an emergency situation where you need blood ASAP you’ll be given O neg.

NoCherryNoDeal · 23/02/2021 18:22

Why wouldn't someone want to know their blood type? It's interesting to some.

LApprentiSorcier · 23/02/2021 18:22

If you know your parents' blood groups you can narrow it down.
