Dp knows his by heart and I don’t. I have no idea! Which he thinks is pretty bad of me, I mean it probably is. But he’s panicking me saying I need to find out just in case I need to know. Aibu to think this is a bit ott?

is it normal not to know it?

How do I find it out? Are they in the red books given out when babies! I’m sure dm probably still has mine!

You could go through your whole life and never need to know your blood group. If medics need to know they will test you. They certainly wont take your word for it. Why does your OH think you should know ?

TangerineGenie · 23/02/2021 18:44

I'm o neg and dc are opos. It's in their baby books

If mum is O negative there's good reason to test the babies blood. Not so much for rhesus positive people

RevolutionRadio · 23/02/2021 18:44

I only know mine as I have given blood.

bimbimbap · 23/02/2021 18:46

you can buy testing kits online for about £5 that will tell you - it’s kind of fun, like an experiment!

HerbErtlinger · 23/02/2021 18:48

I know mine through giving blood and received a key chain with it on afterwards which I have with my house keys which is useful

I'd been given anti d's during pregnancy so wasn't imperative to know. Exp knew he was positive so we knew it was needed. I'm just surprised I'm so alone in everyone around me knowing this info.

noblegreenk · 23/02/2021 18:51

I found out when I was pregnant and they put it in my green pregnancy notes.

optimistic40 · 23/02/2021 18:51

Loads of people don't know. It's ok 👍 I found out mine but have forgotten whether it was neg or pos

midnightstar66 · 23/02/2021 18:51

What part of the UK? Do you have very young twin babies - just wondering if it's a new thing to test and make a note? I have just asked a friend whose baby is 4 months old if she knows.

My dc are 11 and 8, I'm in Scotland but I was born in England, siblings born in Scotland, parents born in England. We all know

EvilPea · 23/02/2021 18:51

I’m an A something, but haven’t a clue further than that
Don’t know the kids either

DanielRicciardosSmile · 23/02/2021 18:52

Here you go, OP.

www.amazon.co.uk/Blood-Type-Test-Kit-EldonCard/dp/B002ZU7GIW?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 (sorry, I don't know how to make a nice link for it).

user2021 · 23/02/2021 18:53

I'm B+ but I only know from when I was pregnant. Luckily I was tested as I needed 2 blood transfusions after having DD1!

RaidersoftheLostAardvark · 23/02/2021 18:53

It doesn't matter if you know or not- if you need blood they will ALWAYS recheck it, because getting it wrong could be fatal & because people can develop new antibodies. In a life threatening situation you get O negative while awaiting the crossmatch result- which they will turn around pretty quick, then send out matched units. For some blood products it's actually not relevant. If you have a very rare type that might be useful info to have- so you can donate to be helpful, and to give the Dr a heads up if they are planning surgery, as takes longer to source suitable units for crossmatch in major surgery.

SusannahSophia · 23/02/2021 18:56

I’m O negative. I only know because of pregnancy and 3 +ve babies so I needed anti D each time. My ex was O +ve so fairly easy to work out they are O +ve.

teenagetantrums · 23/02/2021 18:57

My kids are in Thier 20s it's in thier red books. I only found out mine from donating blood

countbackfromten · 23/02/2021 18:59

Say you were in hospital and needed blood - even if you told us what your blood type was we wouldn’t rely on that information - we would either give blood that is safe to give to all blood types (in an emergency) or wait until we had tested your blood in the lab to find out your blood type.

So it isn’t that big a deal!

CharlotteRose90 · 23/02/2021 19:01

I only found out after a blood test where the doctor randomly rang me and told me I have antibodies in my blood plus I have a rare blood type. . Came in useful less then a year later when I needed multiple transfusions

MrsMarrio · 23/02/2021 19:02

Didn’t know mine until I was pregnant for the first time at 26

endlesswicker · 23/02/2021 19:06

Hospitals have to give blood transfusions to patients in emergencies all the time. They will know what to do when someone's blood group is unknown.

You can always ask your GP next time you see them, it could already be on your medical notes.

DianaT1969 · 23/02/2021 19:11

It's useful to know when travelling. I lived in a country where my group is fairly rare (it's common here). I made a pact with my work colleague, who was also from the UK, that if either one of us ended up in hospital, the other would rush there ready to donate. 😂

endlesswicker · 23/02/2021 19:13

I have just RTFT and realised that I posted what loads of other people have alread said. Many many times. Doh.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 23/02/2021 19:17

I haven’t got a clue, never gave it any thought.

QueenPaw · 23/02/2021 19:20

I don't have a clue and I'm under haematology Grin
Did ask my consultant once and they had no idea either

OooErrThor · 23/02/2021 19:20

Another who only found out because I'm a blood donor, no one told me when I was pregnant.

Definitely give blood OP, you get a drink and biscuits and everyone is so friendly. Plus you are helping others in ways you'll never know.

I figure that I'll accept blood if needed so I should donate, still trying to convince/strong arm my needle phobic DH! It's been nearly 25 years and I'm nowhere nearer with him HmmGrin

MyGorramShip · 23/02/2021 19:20

I found out mine when I was pregnant (21) and only remember what it is as it’s fairly rare (AB+). It’s also why the local blood bank don’t need me to donate.
