Dp knows his by heart and I don’t. I have no idea! Which he thinks is pretty bad of me, I mean it probably is. But he’s panicking me saying I need to find out just in case I need to know. Aibu to think this is a bit ott?

is it normal not to know it?

How do I find it out? Are they in the red books given out when babies! I’m sure dm probably still has mine!

Let’s be honest, you could go through the entirety of your life unaware of your blood type without issue.

If you’re ever in a situation where your blood type is important, your blood will be tested first. Eg if you need a blood transfusion, it won’t matter if you don’t know your type. They’ll either test your blood or give you a universal blood transfusion in an emergency.

I donated blood at 21 and discovered my type then. It never, under any circumstance, came up before or after.

Sparrowfeeder · 24/02/2021 00:23

B- so fairly rare but runs down maternal side. My mum told me I was neg as she was rh neg and they tested me at birth etc. Confirmed giving blood years ago. I like knowing.

ExcusesAndAccusations · 24/02/2021 00:25

The only real reason to know is in order to know how pleased they’ll be to see you when you give blood. O negs get the special chocolate biscuits, Ro’s get a slice of Victoria sponge as well. O pluses get a Rich Tea and B pluses get a glass of water if they’re lucky.

montysma1 · 24/02/2021 02:03

I am B neg and so was needing the anti D injection.

I suggested that they just test my husband and if he was Rh neg as well it would save me the hassle.
At which point they told me they don't take your word for it who the father is!

happymummy12345 · 24/02/2021 02:29

I only found out what mine is when I was pregnant

Sapho47 · 24/02/2021 02:40

Just don't get it tattooed on your arm whatever you do

CorianderBee · 24/02/2021 03:30

Ok? Mum tells me I'm O type... does it matter ? In an emergency o doubt you'd be able to speak

CorianderBee · 24/02/2021 03:31

@ilovesooty

Go and donate then they'll tell you. If you're O Neg in particular they will be so grateful.
Not everyone can donate. I was specifically told not to bother
CorianderBee · 24/02/2021 03:32

@Sapho47

You can donate if you have tats you just have to wait a year...
RickiTarr · 24/02/2021 13:53

She means that Nazi SS officers all had their blood group tattooed in their arms.

Notjustanymum · 24/02/2021 14:24

If you have ever been tested it will be in your medical records... if you’re in the UK, try asking your GP, tell them why and ask for a test if not.

ThreeTwoOneBlastOff · 24/02/2021 14:30

A GP don’t just going to test your blood group because you’ve asked for it.

ThreeTwoOneBlastOff · 24/02/2021 14:34

*isn’t not don’t, I meant.

Spidey66 · 24/02/2021 14:37

@HeyDemonsItsYaGirl

I only learned mine when I saw my birth certificate aged about 20. It was on the cert, though I don't think all of them have it?

I've never needed to use the information.

Never seen that before. I've no idea of mine....definitely not on my birth certificate!!!
janj2301 · 24/02/2021 14:38

Our blood test forms don't even have a tick box to ask for a blood group test, it's not medically required at GP level

Snowpatrolling · 24/02/2021 14:42

I only know mine from the north of my 2nd child age 26! Only cos I needed a transfusion. They didn’t even tell me, I read it off the bag of blood! Lol!!!

Heidi1976 · 24/02/2021 14:45

@LApprentiSorcier

If you know your parents' blood groups you can narrow it down.
This isn't technically true. My parents are both O+. I'm O-.
Heidi1976 · 24/02/2021 14:54

@SusannahSophia

I’m O negative. I only know because of pregnancy and 3 +ve babies so I needed anti D each time. My ex was O +ve so fairly easy to work out they are O +ve.
Not necessarily, I'm neg, my partner is pos, my baby was neg like me.
MRex · 24/02/2021 15:04

I knew mine from giving blood, O+; I think maybe DF is O+ and DM is O- but don't remember for sure.

I'd really like to know DS's, but DH doesn't know his.
DMIL is B and DFIL is O, so DH is either B or O, and in which case DS might be B but more likely O: genetics.thetech.org/ask-a-geneticist/ab-and-o-blood-type-parents-having-and-b-children.
Based on nothing but DMIL and DH having asthma but DS not and looking very like me, I'm assuming DH is B and DS is O.
I considered buying blood test kits, but DH thought this was lunacy. Then I thought I might get a couple of vitamin D tests and pass one off as vitamin D testing him, but then I decided that really was getting close to lunacy. So I remain in ignorance.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/02/2021 15:06

I found I was A+ at my Army medical. As did DH.

No idea about DDs... But using the fact DH& I are A+, I presume they are as well..
If we are both AO, there is a 75 chance of them being A. (As A is dominant)
If one or both of us is AA, then it's 100percent chance of them being A.

bruffin · 24/02/2021 15:09

Im B (found out at pregnancy) but DH says he is O , not sure how he knows

I thought the same as you, but both of my parents are O pos and I'm O neg. My baby is O neg like me, her dad is A pos......
bigbluebus · 24/02/2021 15:43

I also only found out in my 1st pregnancy and only remember it because it was B- so I needed to have anti D injections. I have no clue what blood group either DC was and DD had more blood taken from her arm in her 22 years than I'd care to count. I would say that most people don't know their blood group.

GoodbyeH · 24/02/2021 15:46

@midnightstar66

I saw a post elsewhere today about this. I'm shocked how many people don't have a clue about their or their DC's blood group. Surely this is standard info that you should know?
How do you find out though? I only know because of being pregnant. How do you find out what your DCs are?
Sillyduckseverywhere · 24/02/2021 16:02

I don't know and despite trying twice I can't give blood Sad
