Dp knows his by heart and I don’t. I have no idea! Which he thinks is pretty bad of me, I mean it probably is. But he’s panicking me saying I need to find out just in case I need to know. Aibu to think this is a bit ott?

is it normal not to know it?

How do I find it out? Are they in the red books given out when babies! I’m sure dm probably still has mine!

I already knew mine, but I’ve just looked and it is in my discharge notes from the hospital.

C231009 · 23/02/2021 18:22

@NoCherryNoDeal

Why wouldn't someone want to know their blood type? It's interesting to some.
It’s not that I don’t want to know it, I just haven’t given it much thought.

I found out when I was pregnant, as made sure to ask. Can't remember what it is now tho!

TurquoiseDragon · 23/02/2021 18:23

You don't get told as a matter of routine in this country. I think we should be told, though.

I know mine (O neg) as I'm a blood donor. As I'm RH negative, and had to have the anti-D injection after both children were born, I assumed they are RH positive. I found out that DD is O Pos after sneaking a look at my file when pregnant with DS, when the consultant left the room for a few minutes.

DS will find out his blood group once he's attended his first blood donor appointment.

speakout · 23/02/2021 18:24

My children's blood group was tested just after they were born, but they sampled from the cord- no needles for baby.

Athe · 23/02/2021 18:24

I don’t think not knowing is anything to worry about.
I donated blood and was told on some correspondence but have since forgot it. I only remember it’s one of the most common types.

C231009 · 23/02/2021 18:24

I think he thinks I need to know as he had a transfusion once I believe when poorly. But I’m sure if it was needed it would be on my records anyway!

@midnightstar66

I saw a post elsewhere today about this. I'm shocked how many people don't have a clue about their or their DC's blood group. Surely this is standard info that you should know?
Why though? And babies aren't tested when they're born in the uk.
C231009 · 23/02/2021 18:25

@LApprentiSorcier

If you know your parents' blood groups you can narrow it down.
I don’t know my dad so that’s out the question 😭

You don't really need to know. In the event of an emergency they'd give you plasma expanders and/ universal donor until you're cross matched

C231009 · 23/02/2021 18:26

@speakout

I only found out when I had my first pregnancy- isn't it in your notes OP? I know they test for a range of things, incluing blood group at your booking in, they need to check your Rhesus factor and find out your blood group in case you need a transfusion when youo are giving birth.
I’m unsure. My youngest is nearly 6 so not been pregnant for a long time. Haven’t got my notes 😀

Get pregnant or donate blood.

It's up to you to decide which is the least drastic way of finding out...

HelpMeh · 23/02/2021 18:26

Do you particularly need to know? I only found out mine when I moved abroad for work.

I'm AB+ which is apparently fairly uncommon and used for universal plasma donation. I'm not allowed to give blood in my current country due to the UK's mad cow disease outbreak way back when.

TurquoiseDragon · 23/02/2021 18:26

I think, though, that everyone knowing their blood group could lead to some interesting situations.

For example, 2 parents with blood group A have a child is blood group B, this would give a fair indication that one parent was cheating.

MirandaWest · 23/02/2021 18:26

I know mine, as I used to give blood. I guess it would have been said somewhere when I was pregnant but as I knew it anyway it didn’t register.

No idea what my DCs blood group is. DD has had a blood test but was for anaemia and we weren’t told which blood group she was. DS hasn’t had any blood tests (although I’m hoping now he’s 17 that he’ll go along with DH to give blood some time)

titchy · 23/02/2021 18:27

@DareIask

Exactly. Can you imagine the litigation if they just gave you the type you said you were and you were wrong!
poppycat10 · 23/02/2021 18:27

DH and DS don't know theirs. I originally gave blood when I was 18 so that I could find out. Not sure how you find out otherwise.

Surely this is standard info that you should know Not in the UK.

bridgetreilly · 23/02/2021 18:27

I don't know mine. That's pretty normal, I think.

TurquoiseDragon · 23/02/2021 18:28

And babies aren't tested when they're born in the uk.

They are if the mother might need the Anti D injection. They just don't bother to tell the parents.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 23/02/2021 18:29

Mine were born in the UK and were tested because I am Rh neg.

You can buy home kits simply enough for a couple of quid.

It's not needed it's either in your notes or you'll receive o- until they test which takes seconds.

Don't know my kids, I'm B + and husband is O -.

Parkermumma07 · 23/02/2021 18:31

Only found mine out when pregnant because I was o- and needed anti D didn’t have a scooby before that

janj2301 · 23/02/2021 18:31

If you need blood, even in A&E they wouldn't take your work for it, they would give "O" which is universal whilst the lab checks your blood group. So although it's nice to know you don't need to. My 4 siblings and I are ALL AB+ and I was the only one who donated, to much scar tissue now, too old.

poppycat10 · 23/02/2021 18:31

Well I checked my pregnancy notes and ds' group isn't there. So it's not routine (or they didn't write it down, which I think highly unlikely as they wrote down every other detail!)
