To think DH should know you don’t wash dirty bed linen at 30 degrees?

I know it’s not the end of the world but honestly, he is 38 and now it’s probably going to have to go on again. He has a sweaty head and pillowcases are unlikely to be clean after this wash. I already have to do our bedding in 2 loads as it’s so big and we don’t have a spare set so it all needs to be dry and back in the bed tonight.

I’m so irritated!

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Yanbu. Why do most women know these simple things but so many men don't?

My dh simply forgets this sort of information. He isn't lazy or a housework shirker at all, but he forgets things like this and simple recipes. It's not that he wants to get out of doing them, it's like it's the sort of information that doesn't compute with him.

It may be a simple thing to you, but if you've never been taught it then it really isn't.

My Wife has no idea how to properly adjust the brakes on her bike.

I would never dismissively claim "it's a simple thing". To me, and millions of others, it is - but it would be unfair of me to assume that same knowledge of everyone else, especially on the basis of their gender.

To dismiss "so many men" in such a manner is pretty sexist, in my opinion.

Mamafaye · 24/02/2021 18:04

You have a husband that does the washing.

But you don’t have a second bed set?

I cannot even begin to understand how your brain works or why you are angry. I feel sad for you.

mrst3 · 24/02/2021 18:07

I just wish my husband would throw on a wash whatever the temperature 😂

YABU in my opinion

Tiredwiththeshits · 24/02/2021 18:11

I’d be thankful my OH tried. Although it’s usually wrong. Still over look it this one time and go again next week.

fishnships · 24/02/2021 18:12

With young children around, for me it's got to be a hot wash at 60 for bedding. Not absolutely sure that head lice and thread worms can survive a cooler wash, but don't want to take the risk - and I do know it's less likely that these parasites are around atm. Just feels more hygienic.

MatildaJane · 24/02/2021 18:13

I wash 30 unless it’s something with something like cat sick on it. Sadly, even in this day and age I reckon most men still wouldn’t have a clue about washing machine temperatures 🤣

Lelophants · 24/02/2021 18:15

30 doesn't kill germs. Ewww. There was a poster on AMA ages ago who worked with laundry detergents and could answer all of this.

SnozPoz · 24/02/2021 18:16

Totally understand. Bedding doesn't smell fresh unless it's been on a hot wash. But like the others I would suggest you leave it this time and do it properly the next

Scotland32 · 24/02/2021 18:16

Honestly didn’t know which button to press. Of course they should know. But of course most of them don’t. In my case he was mollycoddled by his mum for far too long!

bondgirl76 · 24/02/2021 18:17

Omg.I wash everything at 40.I mean how dirty are we all?? my mum just had a weekly wash..shoved it in the bath..army kids.Getting way to silly about it

stupidcow7 · 24/02/2021 18:17

You're moaning because your husband washed the bed sheets at the wrong temperature. Heck, he washed the bed sheets. That would've made my day/week/year. The fact that my ex even knew that the washing machine was would've impressed me 🤣🤣🤣🤣 give the guy some credit or set him free, but don't berate him.

Tianatiers · 24/02/2021 18:18

I couldn't get worked up about this unless someone has been ill in it or wet the bed. I think you need to buy a spare set of covers though.

godmum56 · 24/02/2021 18:20

I wash everything at 30

DagenhamRoundhouse · 24/02/2021 18:20

Why not treat yourself to another set of bedding so you can alternate?

VinylDetective · 24/02/2021 18:23

You do know we need “germs” to keep our immune systems functioning optimally? Sterility and human health aren’t compatible.

I can’t believe all you lot are still going on about this TBH Shock

I daren’t ask how often you all change the beds?
OMG OP, don't ask that. That's fighting talk on mumsnet Shock once a fortnight here, which makes me slovenly, apparently (I am on my own, if that makes a difference)

Devlesko · 24/02/2021 18:24

I wash at 30, unless the rare ocassion it needs 40.
Poor dh.

conspicuouslyinconspicuous · 24/02/2021 18:26
@conspicuouslyinconspicuous for what it's worth I think having the option to wash at higher temperatures is a good thing, but it does seem to be the case that manufacturers are phasing out the option to have shorter high temperature programs on their machines. All the ones I looked at (and the one I ended up with) seem to have steam functions that allegedly kill 99.9% of allergens if you then wash at 30.

I've also noticed the quality of fabrics and dyes used in modern clothing and bedding often don't hold up to regular washing at higher temperatures. Just seems like a false economy to me, for the energy saved by washing at lower temperatures you end up replacing items more frequently. Rather like when they reduced the permitted wattage on vaccuum cleaners a few years ago, now I spend at least double the amount of time trying to get rid of dust for probably just as much electricity consumption!
@BoJoHoNo Here's hoping my machine lasts for decades Grin
I have a steam function on mine too, and I love it.

Agree with you re quality of fabrics and dyes, I think it is general quality overall that has decreased due to the wear it once mentality. Buying well initially does help, my French linen bedsheets seem to be getting better with age.

Don't get me started on vacuums since the change to wattage. Infuriating and counter productive.

Confusedandshaken · 24/02/2021 18:28

You can't blame him. We are bombarded with adverts telling us to wash at 30 or that one detergent or another does a great job at 30. I fell for it too when it first started being promoted 25 odd years ago. Experience is the only way to find out that it's utter bollocks. And as the posts here show, it works well enough for some people.

Emmylou1985 · 24/02/2021 18:34

I had no idea so many people washed their bedding at 30/40. I change mine weekly and it wouldn't occur to me to wash below 90!

wanderings · 24/02/2021 18:35

Washing at 40? Won't somebody think of climate change? Greta's puppet strings will soon have the dust flying off them! (She'll come back when international travel is allowed, but that's another debate.)

And I'm with those who say that making our environment too sterile is not good for our health.

LolaB123 · 24/02/2021 18:37

I wash at 30 or 40, and usually on shortest cycle (15mins) unless filthy. This saves time and is more environmentally friendly. I add laundry detergent to every wash, this removes 99% of bacteria. Go him doing the washing, please can he come teach my hubby.🤣😩🤣

JustDanceAddict · 24/02/2021 18:37

I wash bedclothes & towels at 40 but generally wash at 30 unless I’m washing masks! Modern detergents don’t need higher temps and they’re bad for environment

bengalcat · 24/02/2021 18:40

I wash pretty much everything on the 30min cycle - am guessing this is probably 30 degrees - also have pets that get on the bed - am still alive and well as is everyone else in the house - honestly couldn’t tell you when any of us were last unwell or had a day off work /uni etc - works for us

Mrssheppard18 · 24/02/2021 18:42

My hubby’s a mechanic his side is always grim on the pillow and I’ve always washed out bedding on a 30 with no problems. Think you’re being a bit dramatic
