To serve boiled potatoes

Much stroppiness and comments and moaning because when asked what's for dinner and told them they asked would it be nice potatoes or boiled... Nice I said but they were boiled so apparantly I lied.. Surely everyone eats boiled potatoes for dinner in UK sometimes aren't they an English staple part of our traditional diet for context I didn't serve just boiled spuds I served with peas carrots and salmon encroute (shop bought but nice) are they just spoilt? We had pasta yesterday beautiful tapas day before Indian night before fresh fish etc etc it's not like they have to eat it every day I think they are too used to lovely exotic food and are just being ungrateful shits. Or are boiled potatoes actually that bad?

I loathe boiled spuds unless they are new and dressed with something

Pam100127 · 24/02/2021 18:35

Cube the potatoes, boil, until tender, crush a few cloves of garlic, cook in 50g butter & dash of oil in microwave for 2 mins, pour over drained potatoes & toss, brown under hot grill. Sprinkle with salt. Takes very little longer than boiled potatoes & very tasty.

DrCoconut · 24/02/2021 18:41

My grandma used to eat them with mince and no onions (onions were one of the few things she wouldn't eat). Always cabbage or carrots too.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/02/2021 18:46

That sounds delicious, @Pam100127 - I will definitely be making this. Thank you.

I love boiled potatoes. I assumed they were standard Accompaniment to a meal! I tend to boil in their skins because a) I’m a bit lazy b) they are a bit healthier and c) I like them that way. Sometimes I shake them with a bit of butter but usually not. People Put butter on their own ones at the table if they want.

Mary54 · 24/02/2021 18:53

Also a great fan of spuds. Cooked pretty much any way. Nothing wrong with just boiling them although when I make salmon en croute I usually don’t bother with a second carbohydrate

YourWinter · 24/02/2021 19:04

I like potatoes whichever way they're cooked. New potatoes are wonderful with butter and a little salt, maybe some fresh mint. I boil old potatoes too, quartered and cooked in their skins, but I sometimes add a handful of chopped onion and shredded kale or cabbage for the last few minutes, drain and mash it all together with butter, salt and pepper to make colcannon.

crazylikechocolate · 24/02/2021 19:08

New potatoes boiled are nice but just ordinary main crop are grim so no we never have just boiled , too many ways they can be served that are so much nicer with very little extra effort or calories

littlepieces · 24/02/2021 19:12

I'd be glad of any food I was cooked. Talk about ungrateful.

diagold4u · 24/02/2021 19:20

I once, made jacket potato along with fries and curly fries and something else that also contained potato. I served it to dh. He actually was like "this is potato 4 ways do you want me having a heart attack"
I looked at his plate and laughed so much!! I clearly wasn't with it that day!!! I didn't realise I made all that. He can never look at a jacket potato without reminding me of that incident Grin

SSCCLL · 24/02/2021 19:25

With your family here, boiled potatoes are ew

Mermaid67 · 24/02/2021 19:26

Why did you need potatoes with pastry? That’s like burger in a bun with fries, double carbohydrate. Salmon en croute just needs loads of veg surely!

SpudsandGravy · 24/02/2021 19:29

I love boiled potatoes, new or not. I generally give them a really good swish of olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon, salt and pepper. Maybe it's my Irish heritage.

Endoftether2000 · 24/02/2021 19:30

Never had boiled potatoes, always mashed if not new potatoes

ChaToilLeam · 24/02/2021 19:31

Boiled spuds are fine. Every meal doesn’t have to be a spectacular gourmet occasion, what a fuss!

Reminds me of when my now dh was my boyfriend and trying to woo me with his cooking skills. He made a fairly decent chicken rissotto in his shared kitchen. Very nice. Then presented me with dessert - half a tin of Ambrosia creamed rice with jam! I politely declined and I still remind him about this 27 years later whenever we have rissoto Grin.

Only if sprinkled with olive oil, paprika, black pepper and sea salt, then finished off in the oven for 10 mins 😬.

E17Stowmum · 24/02/2021 20:30

Remind me of school, that smell. Only ever enjoyed them in Scotland, as in mince and tatties, where the gravy and superior quality spuds make a fine dish.

LovelyIssues · 24/02/2021 20:56

Eww boiled potatoes are so bland

Sunrainsnow · 24/02/2021 21:03

Sorry Op, plain boiled potatoes pretty boring and yack. Even new potatoes need a little something in my opinion. Just butter and a bit of salt if you are not watching your weight. Or spray with fry light, add herbs and a bit of salt and stick in the air fryer to make them crisp if you are.

Potato 4 ways is my idea of Food Heaven.
TheBuffster · 24/02/2021 21:20

A good punishment, but taking away the iPad might be less cruel.

TheBuffster · 24/02/2021 21:23

@diagold4u can I come round for tea, please.
My order of preference is croquettes, chips, waffles, alphabites and wedges.

Susan1961 · 24/02/2021 21:34

Nothing wrong with unpretentious tatas 😂

Kiki06 · 24/02/2021 22:07

OMG!! I’d forgotten about ‘boiled potatoes’ !!!! How weird is that!!!! And how weird to boil a whole potato 😂😂
