To serve boiled potatoes

Much stroppiness and comments and moaning because when asked what's for dinner and told them they asked would it be nice potatoes or boiled... Nice I said but they were boiled so apparantly I lied.. Surely everyone eats boiled potatoes for dinner in UK sometimes aren't they an English staple part of our traditional diet for context I didn't serve just boiled spuds I served with peas carrots and salmon encroute (shop bought but nice) are they just spoilt? We had pasta yesterday beautiful tapas day before Indian night before fresh fish etc etc it's not like they have to eat it every day I think they are too used to lovely exotic food and are just being ungrateful shits. Or are boiled potatoes actually that bad?

YANBU. I do boiled potatoes at least once a week, I love them. Baby potatoes are best, but even standard ones are fine as long as they're cooked at just above a simmer until tender, not kept on a galloping boil for half an hour or until otherwise rendered inedible.

Neolara · 22/02/2021 23:17

Op - I think this is the perfect opportunity to suggest to your family that if they don't like what you cook, they are more than welcome to cook supper for themselves.

OppsUpsSide · 22/02/2021 23:17

Love boiled potatoes, they are my potatoes of choice with;
Smoked haddock
Leg of lamb
Boiled bacon
Fish pie
Faggots

Sound like my dad Blush

CrystalMaisie · 22/02/2021 23:18

I’ve never cooked them, I hate them. We had them with most dinners when I was a kid, 40+ years ago. My mum used to buy potatoes by the sack. It was a cheap way of feeding a large family.

OppsUpsSide · 22/02/2021 23:20

Oh and with mince, onions and gravy!

Would definitely have them with a salmon encroute

FinallyFluid · 22/02/2021 23:21

Boiled potatoes are vom tastic.

IHaveBrilloHair · 22/02/2021 23:21

I don't make them, just new potatoes.
Ordinary boiled potatoes are a bit boring and remind me of childhood dinners.

MaxNormal · 22/02/2021 23:22

Boiled adult potatoes are the most miserable thing I can think of and not something I'd eat.
Why not just mash them? That would go quite well with the salmon too.

VampireTheBuffetSlayer · 22/02/2021 23:22

Now I'm a big fan of the humble spud but I never have them boiled. Cooked in with a stew, yes, lovely when it takes on all the gravy taste. New potatoes, of course. But an boiled old potato is a sad waste of the effort it's put into to grow for the table.

SplendidSuns1000 · 22/02/2021 23:22

Boiled potatoes are boring. Boiled new potatoes with herby butter or in potato salad are delicious. I can't even imagine how I'd spice up a boiled normal potato. Especially when served with plain boiled veg.

VestaTilley · 22/02/2021 23:24

It’s fine OP. I occasionally do them and ate them a lot as a child. They’re quick, nutritious and cheap, as well as filling.

Yes, mash or roast potatoes etc are nicer- but a lot less healthy and more time consuming. Your DC have probably been spoilt as part of a generation growing up on an endless rotation of delicious, interesting food, which means a perfectly good plain boiled potato nowadays gets sneered at.

You’re entitled to not have fancy elements at every meal. If your children don’t like it then they need to learn to cook.

PickAChew · 22/02/2021 23:24

Depends on the potatoes. A nice waxy and flavourful potato can be lovely boiled, if there is sauce to mop up. A floury spud is quite grim, boiled, particularly when served with something stodgy and no sauce or gravy, like your meal.

Ileflottante · 22/02/2021 23:24

I love a simple boiled spud: let the steam finish, big knob of butter, smattering of parsley, lots of salt and pepper.

Pythonesque · 22/02/2021 23:24

Boiled potatoes commonly served in my house. Mashed potatoes only rarely - plain potatoes are preferred! I do offer butter with them; and as long as their condition is good often leave the skins on.

EBearhug · 22/02/2021 23:24

I like boiled potatoes, but I know I am usually a minority. Mind you, I like potatoes in almost every other form, too.

Oysterbabe · 22/02/2021 23:25

They're fine as long as you drown them in butter.

73kittycat73 · 22/02/2021 23:25

Boiled potatoes and Salad Cream...Yum.

wewillmeetagain · 22/02/2021 23:26

The only boiled potatoes that are worth eating are new potatoes. Normal boiled potatoes remind me of food in old peoples homes or hospitals.

FrumpyDumpyDragon · 22/02/2021 23:27

I'd tell them that if they were that bothered, they were welcome to take their share and mash them with a little butter, cream, whatever to make mashed potatoes instead.

I prefer them with gravy or in a stew. On their own, they're not exciting, but they are perfectly edible, so long as they've been properly seasoned with salt and topped with a little butter.

DavidsSchitt · 22/02/2021 23:27

Well you did lie to them Grin

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/02/2021 23:28

My dd loves boiled potatoes. I think it's weird.

I'd only eat them with vast amounts of mayo and spring onions at a bbq.

Thesunrising · 22/02/2021 23:28

Boiled potatoes are amazing. Slathered in salt and dipped in brown sauce. I always boil more than I need and pop them in the fridge to have as snack potatoes.

ElephantsNest · 22/02/2021 23:29

They are fine with a sauce or gravy, and boiled new potatoes with mint are lovely.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/02/2021 23:30

I've never eaten one Confused

(That's weird)

BogRollBOGOF · 22/02/2021 23:30

The trouble with boiled potatoes is that for 5 minutes more effort, they can be made into a lovely buttery mash.

I steam my potatoes anyway which allows them to hold their texture better.

Boiled potatoes are mostly inoffensively bland, but it's ungrateful to moan about the food that others have cooked for you
