To serve boiled potatoes

Much stroppiness and comments and moaning because when asked what's for dinner and told them they asked would it be nice potatoes or boiled... Nice I said but they were boiled so apparantly I lied.. Surely everyone eats boiled potatoes for dinner in UK sometimes aren't they an English staple part of our traditional diet for context I didn't serve just boiled spuds I served with peas carrots and salmon encroute (shop bought but nice) are they just spoilt? We had pasta yesterday beautiful tapas day before Indian night before fresh fish etc etc it's not like they have to eat it every day I think they are too used to lovely exotic food and are just being ungrateful shits. Or are boiled potatoes actually that bad?

I love a boiled potato. Especially with lots of butter, salt and fresh mint!

Misstabithabean · 23/02/2021 18:46

Serve them regularly to my DS as I know they are one thing he'll definitely eat and they're very quick to make.

peak2021 · 23/02/2021 18:46

I suggest that you show the ungrateful DCs the painting by Van Gogh 'The Potato Eaters', of a family who had nothing else.

JorisBonson · 23/02/2021 18:59

Inspired by this thread we had boiled potatoes for dinner with tons of butter and salt. I'm very happy right now.

cantgetmyheadroundit · 23/02/2021 19:00

@Xerochrysum

Just add a few extra steps to boiled potatoes, it makes it really yummy.

Japanese salty-sweet flavoured potatoes

Man alive, these look good. I might even make them tonight. In fact, fuck it, I'm gonna do them now Grin
SapphosRock · 23/02/2021 19:04

Didn't Charlie Bucket from Charlie and the chocolate factory only eat boiled potatoes and cabbage before he found his golden ticket? I think that says it all.

Navilana · 23/02/2021 19:06

I must admit, except for when boiled potatoes have extra salt on them, I personally don't really like them plain.

Reading all these new variations of a boiled potatoe, I think I'll at least try "boiled with butter" and some of the pan baked ones Grin

cricketmum84 · 23/02/2021 19:12

Oh god OP look what you have started 😂😂😂

Aibu to think that serving potatoes at all with salmon en croute is just unnecessary carbohydrates http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4174172-Aibu-to-think-that-serving-potatoes-at-all-with-salmon-en-croute-is-just-unnecessary-carbohydrates

But I got a brand new username 😉

AnitaB888 · 23/02/2021 21:42

I agree with whoever said ' new pots boiled with butter OK , old pots boiled with butter borrring.'

I only serve old pots as mash with butter - yum, yum !

Nohomemadecandles · 23/02/2021 21:46

Had them lots as a kid. Peeled and boiled. Hated them. Didn't eat them again for probably 25 years until last month. Rediscovered them but with nicer potatoes and stock!

CroutonsAvatar · 23/02/2021 21:47

I know boiled potatoes can be lovely... but I know exactly what your kids mean. I always feel disappointed if something comes with boiled potatoes. Little roast potatoes or wedges are the food of gods.

Cherrysherbet · 23/02/2021 21:48

We would never have just boiled potatoes. It would be new pots with butter, mash or roast. We had plain boiled pots when I was a kid......I wouldn’t think about it now, too plain.

Bid876 · 23/02/2021 21:49

Havnt eaten just boiled potatoes since having Sunday dinner at a friends place 20 years ago, it was a classic boiled to death English dinner which brought back the reasons I hated vegetables as a child.

I love spuds almost every way except plain boiled. I don’t mind new potatoes boiled though.

Coulddowithanap · 23/02/2021 22:24

We had boiled potatoes this evening. Always put butter and gravy on the table so everyone has a choice how they like them.

They are OK unless you over cook them and they go mushy.

OldRailer · 23/02/2021 22:24

I have no potatoes in the house.

I feel we are lacking an essential!

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 23/02/2021 22:28

The only way to redeem boiled spuds is to smother them in salt They're quite nice like that.

MasterBeth · 24/02/2021 11:39
@Okbussitout
"Yes
@Okbussitout
eating boiled regular potatoes is a normal thing.
I and everyone I knew are them every single day when I was growing up.

Thanks. I've never heard of this. Do you mind me asking where you grew up and how old you are? I'm 35 and from the North East. I've never come across this before."

I'm 50+ and I grew up in the west coast of Ireland but now live in the UK.
Obviously I now eat a more varied diet but still love floury boiled potatoes mashed with butter and salt served with meat and veg and washed down with a pint of cold milk.
What you describing there is mashed potato, not boiled potatoes!

You might as well say, I really love boiled potatoes. In fact, I love them so much I smother them in oil and roast them in the oven for 45 minutes.

Taikoo · 24/02/2021 11:45

Nom.
I'll eat them. With butter, salt and pepper.
YANBU.

AlowYew · 24/02/2021 11:47

Boiled potatoes are 🤢

New potatoes with a bit of butter etc

Better but not boiled potatoes alone

Thisistherhythmofthenight · 24/02/2021 17:22

Boiled new potatoes = yes lovely
Boiled potatoes = boring tasteless might aswell make a nice mash

Tessabelle74 · 24/02/2021 17:23

Unless they're liberally tossed about in lots of butter, yabu

user1472151176 · 24/02/2021 17:23

I actually love boiled potatoes with the right meal. Love them if there is gravy. If there isn't gravy I would rather new potatoes or mash. I grew up with traditional British food. Boiled potatoes were served most days 🤣

Rtruth · 24/02/2021 17:26

My father used to serve me about 5 boiled potatoes the size of jacket potatoes. I can’t stand the idea. Boiled baby potatoes are fine but big chip style potatoes I couldn’t eat myself.

beautifuldaytosavelives · 24/02/2021 17:26

I have never eaten a nude boiled potato since I left home. It's a little rebellion at having had them so often. Boring little buggers.
