To serve boiled potatoes

Much stroppiness and comments and moaning because when asked what's for dinner and told them they asked would it be nice potatoes or boiled... Nice I said but they were boiled so apparantly I lied.. Surely everyone eats boiled potatoes for dinner in UK sometimes aren't they an English staple part of our traditional diet for context I didn't serve just boiled spuds I served with peas carrots and salmon encroute (shop bought but nice) are they just spoilt? We had pasta yesterday beautiful tapas day before Indian night before fresh fish etc etc it's not like they have to eat it every day I think they are too used to lovely exotic food and are just being ungrateful shits. Or are boiled potatoes actually that bad?

Just to add that growing up with my parents we never had pasta or rice. I mean NEVER. Potatoes was all there was in our house.

Okbussitout · 23/02/2021 14:18

@knittingaddict yes it does I think I'm the same as your children. Interesting how food can change in not much time.

OldRailer · 23/02/2021 14:20

We had short grain rice in the house growing up in the 60s/ 70s for rice pudding!

Yeah tbh grandparents in their 80s now don't eat rice or pasta. They will have it if we go out for food or have takeaway but wouldn't cook it. Potatoes all the way. I do love potatoes so I get it. Also my grandad has an allotment so home grown are amazing
OldRailer · 23/02/2021 14:21

Home grown are the next level.

Same. I remember having spaghetti carbonara at a friend’s house and thinking that was the height of sophistication and having no idea how to eat the spaghetti!
Tisforptarmigan · 23/02/2021 14:22

I never serve boiled potatoes. Remind me of horrible school dinners.
In fact, must have been at school when I last ate them. I would go without rather than eat them. My children also hate jersey new potatoes. They call them "hard potatoes".

It is the plainest of foods; think hospital and care home meals.

MasterBeth · 23/02/2021 14:24

@OldRailer

Think pasta with added flavour, vitamins and minerals.
No, pasta is designed to be an efficient delivery system for a rich and delicious sauce.

70s boiled potatoes would be served with a dry piece of meat and some watery cabbage or peas.

2021 boiled potatoes seem to be served with a pastry dish and vegetables.

knittingaddict · 23/02/2021 14:31

My parents are in their 80's and still don't eat rice or pasta. I've been organising frozen meals to be delivered to their house during covid times and 2/3 of the meals are off limits. Apparently the mash is watery, so I'm tearing my hair out trying to find meals they actually like.

Also my dad orders fish pie every single time and every single time I have to remind him that it has prawns and they won't eat them. It's become a bit of a running joke now because my husband hears me explaining this every week. My mum is the one with dementia, but I do wonder about my dad sometimes.

WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 23/02/2021 14:46

Im 36 and grew up eating boiled potatoes. Not plain though. They always had butter/gravy/sauce of some kind.

OldRailer · 23/02/2021 15:10

Yes they need a sauce of dome sort.

OldRailer · 23/02/2021 15:10

Some!

Globe22 · 23/02/2021 15:16

Baby boiled pots with butter are delicious , Roast potatoes with Sunday dinner - yum, mash with sausages and gravy - also yum. Plain boiled potatoes - no no no!

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/02/2021 15:46

I've been in hospital loads of times in the last ten years and even they've never served them!

3CCC · 23/02/2021 16:31

It's a no from me as well.

I can manage a few baby potatoes drizzled with butter abs herbs but there's something daunting about that much carbohydrate

Don't see the fuss around roasts spuds either .

Mash on the other hand is a wonderful creation

RampantIvy · 23/02/2021 16:37

Boiled potatoes just remind me of school dinners.

MustardMitt · 23/02/2021 17:04

People have very strong feelings about boiled potatoes it seems....

I like them. Haven’t had them for years though. Nice a floury ones. I also like new potatoes. In fact I like all spuds and don’t really get those that love this but hate that when it’s the same thing!

RampantIvy · 23/02/2021 17:18

I think those of us who find boiled potatoes rather dull find the floury ones especially dull. IMO thye are far better used for mash. I like a boiled potato if it is firm and waxy.

Armi · 23/02/2021 17:23

You need a dab of salad cream with them. Delicious.

Singlenotsingle · 23/02/2021 17:24

Eugh! Reminds me of when I was a kid. My mum served boiled potatoes with mince. Potatoes can be so much nicer. Boil and slice them, and put them in the frying pan - fry in butter with chopped onions.

Tierrasfuente · 23/02/2021 17:29

Well I love boiled potatoes (and indeed any potatoes). Especially eaten with butter/mustard/mayo.

maddy68 · 23/02/2021 17:31

Boiled potatoes are rank ..(unless they are new potatoes with loads of butter )

zingally · 23/02/2021 17:31

I hated boiled potatoes as a kid, but now quite like them! Easy, filling, good way to mop up gravy or sauce! Had some for my tea yesterday in fact!

Catterpillar · 23/02/2021 17:41

@Okbussitout
"Yes @Okbussitout eating boiled regular potatoes is a normal thing.
I and everyone I knew are them every single day when I was growing up.

Thanks. I've never heard of this. Do you mind me asking where you grew up and how old you are? I'm 35 and from the North East. I've never come across this before."

I'm 50+ and I grew up in the west coast of Ireland but now live in the UK.
Obviously I now eat a more varied diet but still love floury boiled potatoes mashed with butter and salt served with meat and veg and washed down with a pint of cold milk.

MiddlesexGirl · 23/02/2021 18:37

I too had boiled potatoes every day as a child. Pasta and rice didn't become popular until I'd estimate the late 70s. Started with spaghetti bolognese!
I'm in my 50s from Middlesex if that isn't obvious Wink
