But there are thousands and thousands coming up from Mexico because biden has said the borders are open.
Does that not concern

minou123 · 05/03/2021 23:46

The link is an opinion piece and not fact checked. But this part doesn't make much sense to me:

Consider the contours of this challenge. Twice as many people, about 80,000, tried to cross the border illegally in January of this year as compared with January a year ago.

Biden was inaugurated on 20th Jan 2021. So, surely Trump was in control for the majority of January this year?

PerkingFaintly · 05/03/2021 23:46

@Zizzagaaaaahttss

How do you all feel about the 2.1 million election votes that are going to be forensically audited in maricopa county?
If there's a reason to do it, that meets some threshold to avoid vexatious demands for recounts then it should be done. But I suspect, as a PP said, it will just repeat the current result and thus be a waste of time and money.

Also at this stage it will make no difference to who the current incumbent is. Just as investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election made no difference to Trump being president.

It was proven that the Russians had indeed interfered, but not whether their interference had changed the outcome of the election.

But even if the Russian interference HAD been proven to have changed the outcome, by the time the investigation was finished Trump had been sworn in.

There isn't really a mechanism for dealing with this situation. (And only a president with integrity, who put the national interest and the preservation of democracy above their personal power, would resign the presidency if they realised they'd been installed by a hostile power.)

HoneysuckIejasmine · 05/03/2021 23:48

Well, tragically, due to Trump's rampant mismanagement of the pandemic, 500,000 and counting Americans have lost their lives in the last year. A lot of them low income POC.

If anything, Republicans should be pleased to have some new people entering the country to exploit.

Think you need to watch the video of tent City in tijuana mexico in this tweet

PerkingFaintly · 05/03/2021 23:55

I may have missed this, but when did Biden say the US had open borders?

Again, from links in the piece you posted:
[Jen Psaki]: “We continue to convey that this is not the time to come [to the United States].
nypost.com/2021/02/11/wh-cant-say-how-it-is-refuting-belief-the-us-border-is-open/

People spreading rumours that the borders are open (as you yourself have just done) does not mean borders are open.

Zizzagaaaaahttss · 06/03/2021 00:03

The White House to illegal immigrants: “We are not saying don’t come, we’re saying don’t come now, because we will be able to deliver a safe and orderly process to them as quickly as possible” t.co/huYgag6cXM

PerkingFaintly · 06/03/2021 00:03

I'm not expecting magic 100% solutions for illegal immigration from anyone. There will always be pull factors and push factors.

Push factors are usually the ones which get people to take major risks with their lives.

There are some responses that are worse than others though. Separation of infants from parents as punishment for illegal entry is definitely up there with the most harmful.

You are posting opinios not facts

minou123 · 06/03/2021 00:16

Ohbdear, I looked at that twitter link. I did it so others don't have to.

  1. Tijuana Tent City is in Mexico. Not in the US
  2. Tent city has been in existence for the last 10 years. It was cleared and then set back up in 2018. Under Trumps Presidency, not Biden.
  3. The guy in the video, Ben, is a real charmer, here is a summary of some of his tweets/thoughts:
Retweets Marjorie Taylor Greene Thinks climate change is a hoax Abortion is killing babies Covid vaccine isn't necessary

Ben's opinion on immigration is bullshit and the fact that you linked his tweet says a lot about you.

PerkingFaintly · 06/03/2021 00:18

It's a short clip, but as far as I can make out that''s a statement to people applying to be legal immigrants, going through the safe and orderly process.

A safe and orderly process which determines who is allowed in the country, is the opposite of borders being open.Hmm

You might have more context, of course.

But in general immigration processing isn't something that takes a long time with genuinely open borders or almost open borders – as those of us who lived in the EU until a few months ago can testify. Whizzing through in the EU-passport queue, one always looked with sympathy at the slow-moving non-EU-passport queue.

PerkingFaintly · 06/03/2021 00:24

From my brief squizz at the rest of the material, I think your preferred "sources" are using the same trope as some of the UK media, which (deliberately IMO) talks of all immigrants as though they were illegal immigrants.

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 06/03/2021 00:24

Ah yes, the huge caravans of illegals making their way to our borders. Shock. Horror.
Could we at least try and move the outrage to something less predictably fear mongering please? Trump was ranting about this for the last 5 years. We’ve had the same in Europe. And if you’re spouting the same crap as Nigel Farage, it’s probably time to consider finding some moral decency.
But hey, here’s a good article on why this sort of BS hatred is effective. Please note, it is not written by a fascist or religious extremist with views from the dark ages.

Jen Psaki's press conference today

Yamiche Alcindor @yamiche
WH Press Secretary Jen Psaki confirms again that a group of WH officials will be taking a trip to the southern border to brief the president on the influx of migrants coming to the border. She won't say when the group is going or who will be part of the group traveling down.
.@PressSec pushing back on former Pres Trump's attack on Pres Biden's immigration policies says: "We don't take our advice or counsel from former President Trump on immigration policy."

(CNN)West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin stalled the passage of the Democrats' $1.9 trillion Covid relief bill for hours on Friday, as Republicans urged him to support a less generous plan extending enhanced benefits for the unemployed.

The Senate had braced for a series of politically tough amendment votes that will stretch late into the night and into Saturday, the last major hurdle senators face before voting on President Joe Biden's top legislative priority.

PerkingFaintly · 06/03/2021 00:39

Blimey, this is bringing back memories of Europe in the days when borders were genuinely almost completely open to EC/EEC/EU passport holders (subject to checking against wanted lists, and obviously for actual residence and tax it was all more complicated).

I remember being woken by the border guard opening the door of the train compartment with a cheery "Guten Morgen", and the other inhabitants saying "Sie ist Englisch" before I'd got out more than a blurry, "Bleugh" – and he was gone before I'd even managed to wave my passport at him.

I was most disappointed to come home with so few stamps.

PerkingFaintly · 06/03/2021 00:44

Thanks for the heads-up about the Covid relief bill, Duncin.

maggiethecat · 06/03/2021 08:24

A deal’s been reached it seems after Biden intervened but highlights how difficult it will be for Dems to push through their policies.

borntobequiet · 06/03/2021 08:45

A highlight of my parents’ lives was the motor tour they did of European countries in the mid 1970s. For people who had lived through and fought in WW2, it was a miracle to be able to travel so freely, even though border controls were still (technically) in place.
My own recollection is of being waved through or perfunctory checks only in Northern Europe, though the Spanish border was heavily policed and the border guards unfriendly. But that was hardly surprising.

DuncinToffee · 06/03/2021 10:28

More information on migrant border crossings
(CNN)The Biden administration is considering opening additional temporary border facilities in Arizona to manage the influx of migrants arriving at the US-Mexico border, marking the latest move to address capacity issues that have been exacerbated because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Is it good netiquette to copy-and-paste entire newspaper opinion-pieces without giving a link or attribution? (Asking for a friend who is a writer.)

Blueberries0112 · 06/03/2021 13:03

Nope, I have always believe U.S./Canada/Mexico goes hand in hand and we need to work together. Canada is more socialist than Mexico and I thought America don’t like socialist countries. Yet they don’t worry about Canada bad influence on American therefore Canada don’t have border issues with them. But we gotta be racist, don’t we.
