Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

dontdillydallytoolong · 21/02/2021 23:42

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

Dishwasher for me - currently without one and it's a PiTA.

TangerineGenie · 22/02/2021 14:52

Generally it's a washer dryer.

Maybe things have moved on, but every washer dryer I've used still requires hanging up damp clothes. Clothes don't come out dry like a tumble dryer

@VLAL

Dishwasher!

Cheeky so and so's will bring half their wardrobe otherwise!

My mum has a holiday let and people have rocked up and IMMEDIATELY started doing washing. So they bring dirty clothes, wash them throughout their stay and then again before they leave. All because the water and electricity is free (to them anyway!).

It's not cheeky if it's provided. Assume every group renting the place will have x no. Of showers and or baths, will use the dishwasher at least once a day and the washing machine y times during a stay and set your pricing accordingly if water is metered, etc.

What really grates with me as a renter of holiday lets is when dishwasher tablets, etc are rationed. I know some people will take things home with them (not me, but some do) if you provide more than one, but price to replenish for each stay and don't be stingy.

I feel after eleven pages that I can now confess that I actually run the hoover round mid week and clean all the loos in a holiday rental. Shock I am assuming if putting a wash on 'doing the laundry on holiday' is frowned upon that's a huge no-no.

LeSquigh · 22/02/2021 14:54

When I book AirBnBs I always look for a washing machine. I don’t have a dishwasher at home though as I don’t have room for one. One of the best parts of holiday is eating out. There’s always a few breakfast things to wash up and that’s fine but having a washing machine with kids has been a lifesaver on holidays past, especially with a baby.

flippertygibbit · 22/02/2021 14:54

Washing machine, we travel by motorbike so don't have enough space for a suitcase. I also put all towels in to wash after we've used them!

Kitewoman · 22/02/2021 14:55

how long are people usually staying? For a few days, it is a dishwasher but if stayed longer than a week, it's the washing machine.

Sparklingbrook · 22/02/2021 14:55

If there a dishwasher tablets supplied, I just replace what I use but that might be incorrect etiquette, not sure.
If there is a washing machine I wouldn't expect any powder/conditioner to be provided as that's a bit of a personal preference one.

SnugglySnerd · 22/02/2021 14:56

Washing machine. Having taken baby twins on holiday with no washing machine I will never ever book a place without one ever again. Hand washing sleep suits after nappy explosions was not fun and it was hard to dry them too.
Even now they are older (3) they still get covered in mud/ice cream/whatever and I don't really want to have to leave those sorts of things until we go home.

Sonicbloom · 22/02/2021 14:58

Dishwasher - always take enough clothes but certainly don’t like washing up !

Confusedandshaken · 22/02/2021 14:58

I used to lot of week long self catering breaks when DC were little and was never bothered about a washing machine but a dishwasher was essential.

The only time I need a washing machine when I'm on holiday is on the rare occasions I'm away for more than a fortnight.

PineappleTart · 22/02/2021 15:01

Depends on the type of holiday maker you're likely to get I think. If it's an outdoorsy place I'd rather have a washing machine but in a town etc I'd rather a dishwasher

TheyIsMyFamily · 22/02/2021 15:05

@Tankflybosswalkjam

Dishwasher! Who the hell does washing on holiday??
Lots of people do, especially those travelling with children, and especially those away from home for more than a week. We certainly do. Beats having to come home to do mountains of laundry when you can easily stay on top of it while you're away.

Plus, we travel for sporting events ... gear has to be washed out overnight.

I'd rather wash dishes by hand than clothes.

poorremus · 22/02/2021 15:05

Dishwasher BUT (and apologies if I have missed this) if you are near a sandy beach then washer dryer would be my preference. It's great to be able to properly wash and dry gritty, sandy towels during a holiday.

toolazytothinkofausername · 22/02/2021 15:06

Regular size washing machine and a table top microwave.

toolazytothinkofausername · 22/02/2021 15:06

I meant dish washer Blush

Lancrelady80 · 22/02/2021 15:18

Both. You need both if you can possibly work out how to do it.

Children get travel sick/wet the bed/have nose bleeds/get vomiting bugs. Little ones may have reflux. If countryside, you're looking at muddy clothes. If beach, sand. You really need the washing machine unless you want to potentially be left with extremely soiled and stained bed sheets.

Dish washing on holiday is annoying, but it's more able to be dealt with than needing a washing machine.

PresentingPercy · 22/02/2021 15:43

Lots of smaller holiday rentals do not have washing machines. Bigger ones with bigger kitchens do.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/02/2021 15:49

@Raindropsonrosesand
Yes I was joking, but I fear I may have planted a seed of an idea for some other readers. Shock
So, it's back to square one I'm afraid. Sorry

It's a shame Mumsnet doesn't have a voting option ... what do we think it is, roughly 10 to 1 in favour of the dishwasher ( over the washing machine nutters)

I person find people who think dishwashers are essential as nutters! I honestly don't understand it! Madness. Certainly not the same in my family or circle of friends. MN is obsessed with them.
bloodyhairy · 22/02/2021 15:59

Dishwasher. 100%.
It seems rather sad to be doing laundry on your holiday!

safariboot · 22/02/2021 16:00

I voted washing machine, but that's on the basis the holidaymakers will just use the annexe facilities. Access to laundry facilities is so useful on holiday. A dishwasher is just nice to have.

If you'll be letting guests use the washing machine in the main house (for a fee), then you could put a dishwasher in the annexe.

bloodyhairy · 22/02/2021 16:01

Utterly bizarre to me that people wouldn't take enough clothes for their holiday, and have to wash them there.

PurpleDaisies · 22/02/2021 16:02

I would say it’s thd other way round.
