Dishwasher or washing machine in holiday let?

dontdillydallytoolong · 21/02/2021 23:42

Hi. We are in the process of converting our annexe into a holiday let. There is one double bedroom and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is space in the kitchen for either a washing machine or a dishwasher. Which would you prefer if you were staying? My husband is saying washing machine, but I am thinking dishwasher. Would like help to decide. Thanks.

YABU - washing machine
YANBU - dishwasher

Washing machine.
It's easier to wash cutlery by hand than clothes.

TBH both is better. Even if you slot in a half size dishwasher.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 22/02/2021 07:36

Dishwasher

100%

orangejuicer · 22/02/2021 07:37

Definitely washing machine.

It's all very well saying why not being enough clothes for a week but what about the unexpected? Heavy period, poorly children, poorly animals? (I speak from experience on the last one)

That's not a conversation I'd like to be having with the homeowner!

DinosaurDiana · 22/02/2021 07:37

Dishwasher.
I take enough clothes to last, I don’t want to be washing dishes !

GoLightlyontheEarth · 22/02/2021 07:37

Also as someone said if there are lots of walkers, you need a washing f machine.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 22/02/2021 07:38

I would never rent a holiday place without a washing machine. That said, I don't mind if it's in a separate building as I only do 1 or 2 loads. Could you put a dishwasher in the kitchen and a washing machine in a garage or similar?

minniemoocher · 22/02/2021 07:39

Washer dryer, especially if it's an "outdoorsy" area. Great for when you are covered in mud. Don't bother with just a washer though

Ponoka7 · 22/02/2021 07:39

How luxury/expensive is the accommodation? Is more pricey then people are going to be used to having a dishwasher.

What is there to do locally/why are people coming there?

I camp regularly, under those circumstances the camp launderette is well used. Likewise we've booked apartments for hiking etc and again we use the washing machine. If it's local to a beach, you need washing facilities. I at least use the spin on the washing machine.

There's a big difference in a city location/break and one more outdoorsy. You consider who are going to be your regulars and what they will be doing. The more expensive inner city Edinburgh apartments have washing machines but no dishwashers. Have a look on air b&b/booking.com and see what's being provided locally. They are already established and know what people prefer.

minniemoocher · 22/02/2021 07:39

Ps I don't cook on holidays!

FrickinA · 22/02/2021 07:42

Dish washer! 2 kids and we have NEVER washed clothes on a holiday in a machine even when there was one. We bring enough clothes and if it’s somewhere outdoorsy where we’ll get muddy wet then they wear wellies and the same muddy outdoors clothes a few timesZ what’s the point of washing clothes just to get filthy again!
And where would they’d Dry the wet clothes if they did wash them??

user0987654 · 22/02/2021 07:44

Dishwasher. I always take enough clothes with me not to need a washing machine, washing dishes is a pain in the bum

GameSetMatch · 22/02/2021 07:45

I wouldn’t stay anywhere without a dishwasher. It’s a must! Who wants to go on holiday and hand wash for a week.

PurpleMustang · 22/02/2021 07:46

Definitely a dishwasher. If you did choose the washing machine you also then have to think about how it would be dried. No space for a drier so then looking at needing to provide airers. But then will this cause mildew. If I was staying somewhere I would be disappointed with no dishwasher as it is a holiday. If there is a laundrette near by, leave info for it. But most expect to not wash clothes on holiday. If they do, they will just find one that does have one as a preference.

ChazP · 22/02/2021 07:48

Definitely dishwasher!

sunflowertulip · 22/02/2021 07:50

Dishwasher for us!

clary · 22/02/2021 07:50

I would never consider sc without a washing machine.

Not everyone has a dishwasher at home, you can wash pots by hand; but no washing machine means you have to bring all the clothes you'll need, a nightmare in the UK. My kids used to take one hoody and a three changes of clothes. All of us plus beach kit etc in the car meant minimal packing. I would have been lost without the ability to do a wash. Plus wash the day before you leave and take home clean clothes.

pictish · 22/02/2021 07:50

By contrast, we ALWAYS do a few loads of washing on holiday. We don’t mind hand washing dishes. If it means we get suitable accommodation in exactly the location we want to be, the dishwasher doesn’t even come into it, only the washing machine matters. Or at least, laundering facilities on site.

Our holidays are always outdoor activity based and self-catering. We camp or cabin or cottage depending on what’s available in the chosen location. All are good. No laundry facilities? BAD.

Lockdownbear · 22/02/2021 07:51

Slimline dishwasher and washer dryer.

fluffiphlox · 22/02/2021 07:54

I have a property in France I rent out if I’m not there. I have both and I think you should find room for both. A washing machine doesn’t have to be in the kitchen.

pictish · 22/02/2021 07:54

Us...we don’t mind if it means we’re located exactly where we want to be to do the thing we came to do. Washing dishes by hand or otherwise isn’t even a consideration. Washing our gear is.
HeronLanyon · 22/02/2021 07:54

washing machine 100%

Never in my life in any circumstance have I considered a dishwasher to be more essential than a washing machine. Never will and don’t think a holiday let is any different. Quite the opposite.
If you are somewhere where guests will be on the beach or doing long country coastal walks then a washing machine is all the more essential.
It means you can do the holiday let washing there where you don’t have right turn arounds rather than in your place.
Never in a holiday let (in this country) have I had loads of people round for a meal or had a crazy cooking day generating so much washing that I wanted a dishwasher. If I planned to exceptionally I’d then look for somewhere with a dishwasher.
always I have had washing to do - usually towels and swim/beach stuff.

So washing machine very firmly here if you can have only one. If so have a machine cleaning product. I wouldn’t use a manky oft used by strangers machine’ at all. Needs to be clean.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 22/02/2021 07:56

Before I had kids, I never washed clothes on holiday, but now, definitely. Walking, hiking, beach... Definitely need a washing machine! I guess I’m not bothered about a dishwasher as we don’t have one at home, but we only ever cook quite simply on holiday, so not loads of washing up.

CriticalWoman · 22/02/2021 07:56

Your set up suggests 2 young children staying so definitely a washing machine. Although is there any way you can squeeze in both? Washing machine in an outhouse for example? And combined with a dryer.

BiddyPop · 22/02/2021 07:56

Dishwasher...no one wants to be washing dishes after every meal (as there's usually only enough cutlery/crockery for 1 meal at full occupancy).

Most people will bring enough clothes for the week, or do a couple of bits in the sink if absolutely necessary.

Is there a launderette nearby you could include in your information pack?

Blockedoff · 22/02/2021 07:58

If you're creating "home@ holiday I'd say washing machine.

We've got a holiday let, lucky to have space for both.

We've had it three years, it's going great (pre Covid, but lucky enough to get grants to help whilst on lockdown).

It's great fun.
