Hmm

It's a name I've liked since seeing the film Wonder. He was known as Auggie, I also like Gus. Nice nod to ancestors.

m0therofdragons · 20/02/2021 18:26

I hope every parent would think about how a name might be abbreviated and also whether or not it makes a child a target for name calling or worse.

Or maybe every parent could teach their dc not to be a bullying name-calling twat Angry

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 20/02/2021 18:27

@Anyoneelsewilldo

I can’t believe everyone is saying Gus is a good strong name! When he starts school it’ll be Gus the Wuss / Wussie Gussie

Awful name for a child.

As I said earlier on this thread it’s like the name of a bird! The lesser spotted August Phillip-Hawk

Dreadful.

But Gus doesn’t rhyme with Wuss (or wussie with Gussie)

I expect his parents are happy with the name, and that’s all that matters

MrsMackesy · 20/02/2021 18:31

I don't think he will move in circles or be educated where being called Gus is likely to be an issue except a positive one.

In any event, the unkind, cruel or just plain silly can make bullying nicknames out of any name - well, out of anything really.

how will it be wussie gussie? They don't even sound alike?

I think it's a fabulous name. A nod to the past and to family, but also not old fashioned or stuffy.

notsureofname · 20/02/2021 18:33

August Wilson - great playwright. My first thought..

Madcats · 20/02/2021 18:41

Mark Zuckerberg's daughter is called "August", which is possibly why I imagined that boys were Augustus. At least it is easy to spell/pronounce.

Princess Anne's son was married to "Autumn".

Anyoneelsewilldo · 20/02/2021 18:41

@Teana89 from Recess this kids cartoon I used to watch when younger which had a wussie gussie kid called Gus!

AllFrightOnTheNight · 20/02/2021 19:09

It's not terrible.
Augusta and Augustus are reasonably well known names, August is just a short for those, surely?

TheRebelle · 20/02/2021 19:12

I think it’s a dreadful name and if a friend called their kid that I’d be giving them the side eye BUT this is not a normal kid, he’ll never have to put his CV in a pile for a job or answer phones in a call centre so they can get away with it.

MrsMackesy · 20/02/2021 19:14

August is such a lovely month. Maybe it has happy memories for them.

VinylDetective · 20/02/2021 19:21

Cool name. Nice fuss free announcement with a normal picture where you can see his face. Works for me.

Ludo19 · 20/02/2021 20:16

I like it but then as its their baby I'm sure they don't care what anyone thinks.

StoneofDestiny · 20/02/2021 20:20

As long as our taxes don't have to go to his upkeep

Bimblybomeyelash · 20/02/2021 20:30

Bloody hell, who are the nasty people who come onto this thread to slag off HandM? I here really are some poisonous little minds out there. GET A LIFE.

TwelvePaws · 20/02/2021 22:06

OP? WHERE ARE YOU ? You didn’t even appear to finish your first post. On Mumsnet ‘no’ is apparently a complete sentence but I’m pretty sure ‘hmm’ isn’t. What a twat you are.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/02/2021 22:15

It’s just the name they liked I guess! Neither here nor there to me but I don’t find it particularly laughable.

SpeckledyHen · 20/02/2021 22:20

My first reaction was why have they name him after an Eric Clapton album ?

laidbacklife · 20/02/2021 22:23

I like it - it’s grown on me over the last few hours :D and I particularly like Gus for short.

dontgobaconmyheart · 20/02/2021 22:30

How snide. I can't imagine it will affect anyone here what the baby is called either way. It's hardly a made up name either, it is an existing name that derives from Latin Confused. Getting worked up over what someone you don't know and will never meet named their newborn is bizarre.

Wouldn't that be wonderful. However, I think sometimes it might be the parents who come up with the idea of name calling.
YouKnowItsTrue · 20/02/2021 22:52

I wonder if he’ll be known as Hawke.

Fiona2020 · 20/02/2021 23:05

I like it! Makes a change from sodding Olivia, Amelia or Jack!

Lalliella · 20/02/2021 23:34

@PenisBeakerIsMyFavouriteMuppet

What are your children’s names, OP? I fancy a laugh.
Ah they’re boring, you wouldn’t laugh at them at all. I’m not laughing at August, I just love a good baby name discussion. It’s not one I would choose personally however.
