@ChristOnAPeloton

I say Gus to rhyme with fuss, and wuss to rhyme with puss.

They don’t rhyme in my SE accent.

Same here (I'm Scottish). I've never heard either of them pronounced any other way. They don't rhyme.
Poorlykitten · 21/02/2021 16:42

@Ninkanink please come back and explain what wuss rhymes with??? Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 21/02/2021 16:44

Or do you say
C-oo-s c-oo-s
G-oo-s
W-uh-s

TonightMatthew · 21/02/2021 16:47

Gus: Fuss, muss, pus, bus. Has an 'uh' in the middle.

Wuss: puss. More like an 'ooh' in the middle.

I've practiced in my large repertoire of very realistic accents and in most, it doesn't rhyme.

Ninkanink · 21/02/2021 16:51

Ok, lets move on to Bath vs Bahth vs Barth Grin

Poorlykitten · 21/02/2021 16:52

I’m northern so I say ‘I’m having a bath’ but I’m going to visit ‘Barth ’ , which I’m sure you’ll find is all completely correct.

Poorlykitten · 21/02/2021 16:52

(This is a much better thread now btw)

In my not very broad West Midlands accent pus and puss are the same. Uh not ooh

If someone called me a w-ooh-s for not liking needles I'd be most perplexed.

Yeah West Midlander agrees
Haveyouallgonequitemad · 21/02/2021 16:59

@ancientgran wuss rhymes with puss or cous (cous cous) but doesn't rhyme with anything else really, I have learned that August is prounounced all - Gust like must or bust dust lust must trust etc so actually a much much pronunciation so you can make good poems rude songs and limericks with the name think that is the reason for choosing

Pennethorne · 21/02/2021 17:00

It's a name. Old-fashioned, but a name.

So really, OP, just showing your ignorance. Don't snark on a name if you can't spot one with a long history.

LittleTiger007 · 21/02/2021 17:02

@LuluJakey1

I quite like it - I would think he'll be Gus or Augie. Gus Brooksbank sounds good.
This is a good point. With a long surname like that, Gus will work well.

I pronounce it the way people from Bath do (lived very near there for many years), with the lovely ‘ah’ sound in there.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/02/2021 17:17

@Daphnise

It's about what you might expect from a couple of not terribly high intelligence, who have probably never made a decision in their lives.
B-A* at GCSE, B-A at Alevel and 2:1, ahem ight not be curing cancer but she hardly warrants derision over her intelligence.

I wish they bet they consulted you in the baby naming process as you come across far superior to them.

I'm sure they have the ability between them to choose a name they love and has meaning to them. I can't imagine the queen is worrying too much to intervene in the baby who is 11th in line to the throne.

Poorlykitten · 21/02/2021 17:22

@Haveyouallgonequitemad it’s pronounced like August, the month, fairly easy to not get it wrong, there’s no ‘All’ -gust. There’s a ‘or’ sound. It’s a fairly common name in other countries.

I've lived in different areas of England and I've never heard wuss/puss with an ooh in the middle. So if you're calling you cat in you call, Poohs poohs? Mrs Slocombe wouldn't agree.
Haveyouallgonequitemad · 21/02/2021 17:27

@Poorlykitten but I asked and someone said gust not goost now I'm confused but oh well don't really care tbqh!

I knew a November once

LeaveMyDamnJam · 21/02/2021 17:30

It’s a tad Jeeves and Wooster.

Hope4theBestPlan4theWorst · 21/02/2021 17:31

There was another thread about someone asking for a middle name for Forrest

I mean ffs

People need to realise that babies grown into adults and hopefully will have careers and enter the world of work plus go thru education

Having a ridiculous name is not helpful

Oscarsdaddy · 21/02/2021 17:34

I hear they’ve call him august as there’s a chance we may be out of lockdown by then

kittycorner · 21/02/2021 17:37

I gave it no real thought, imagine having just had a baby, coming on here and seeing a large % of people say they hate it. Awful. It's a name his parents loved and that's enough.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g - I don't think Holly is mostly a name related to Christmas. There's Holly Hobbie etc. Most Holly's I know are spring and summer babies. I know two Summer's, both born in winter.
