Stuck between two names.

Hey guys.
So my partner and I are having our first girl in April. We are stuck for names. But have narrowed it down to two. Cleo and ivy. We like traditional names that can’t be shortened but Someone said to me that cleo is a ‘chav’ name which has put me off ? What are people’s thoughts?

OP posts:

Both lovely names.

JuneauBound · 18/02/2021 00:06

Chav is not a very nice phrase and is a snooty concept, so I'm tempted to say Cleo to defy the nasty term, but I like Ivy and my first thought with Cleo is "Renault" so I'd vote Ivy.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 18/02/2021 00:08

I personally prefer Cleo, but they’re both nice.

Hankunamatata · 18/02/2021 00:09

Ivy.

I really like April for a girl.

FancySomeChips · 18/02/2021 00:11

I like April too! I thought that was what one of the names were!

MorriseysGladioli · 18/02/2021 00:13

I like them both. Smile
Don't worry what others think; have you seen some of the proposed names people ask about!?

passthemustard · 18/02/2021 00:14

I hate both tbh but it's not my kid...

AlwaysLatte · 18/02/2021 00:18

I don't think Cleo is chavvy at all (unless you spell it Kleee-oh or something. I really like it.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 18/02/2021 00:20

I like Cleo, not keen on Ivy

How about Clara or Claudia?

PLAYJAJADINGDONG · 18/02/2021 00:21

I love both Cleo and Ivy. Ivy might just nudge it but both are lovely.

April is awful.

FredaFlintstone · 18/02/2021 00:22

Cleo is the name of a fish...in some Disney film maybe, can't quite remember.

Ivy is nicer.

Bunnybigears · 18/02/2021 00:23

Cleo is nice and not that well used. Ivy is ok but very popular.

Theotherrudolph · 18/02/2021 00:25

Cleo will be misspelled as Clio and there will be Renault jokes. It’s a nice name and I wouldn’t let those factors stop me, but if it’ll bother you I’d go with Ivy. Which is a perfectly good name albeit one I don’t particularly like because I regard Ivy as a weed.

whatwherewhywhenhow · 18/02/2021 00:25

I like Ivy (and April but not if she’s born in April because that’s weird to me).

Leeds2 · 18/02/2021 00:28

I prefer Ivy. Cleo reminds me of the Clio car.

BouncyTigger85 · 18/02/2021 00:36

I really like the name Cleo

@FredaFlintstone Cleo was in Pinocchio, she was Gepetto’s goldfish :)

ChristOnAPeloton · 18/02/2021 00:41

I don’t mind Cleo.

Not keen on Ivy. I love loads of the other Granny chic names btw. Ivy just doesn’t belong in the 21st century IMO.

Notimeforaname · 18/02/2021 00:42

Poison ivy. No.
Cleo is better.

DramaAlpaca · 18/02/2021 00:42

I cannot stand the word 'chav', it's a nasty term that I hate seeing on here.

As for Cleo, it's not in the least bit downmarket and it's nicer than Ivy in my opinion.

grassisjeweled · 18/02/2021 00:44

What's wrong with April?

partyatthepalace · 18/02/2021 00:47

I don’t think Cleo is downmarket at all, and I like it a lot.

Quite like Ivy too, but not as much

ReggieKrait · 18/02/2021 00:48

Both of them are really lovely - in your situation I’d go with whichever goes better with any middle names and your surname.

Cleo is definitely not a “chav” name.

Firebird83 · 18/02/2021 01:55

Cleo, definitely. Ivy is very popular at the moment.

Chunkymenrock · 18/02/2021 02:12

Cleo is lovely. I can't bear the naff sounding, geriatric Ivy. Its a horrible invasive plant.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 18/02/2021 02:18

I prefer Cleo , quite a lot of babies named Ivy at the moment.
