To not answer door to neighbour

It’s 8 am and neighbour has rung my doorbell twice already. Have no idea what they want but I don’t feel like answering the door. They probably know I’m in which is why they keep ringing the bell but AIBU to ignore until I feel like it?

I really don’t understand this what if your neighbour was coming to tell you that something had happened like the wind had knocked something off your house or your car had been broken into or your cat has been run over?
Why assume they’re just being awkward?

I just don’t understand the mentality

@Ginfordinner

In some areas a parcel left on the doorstep might not be there when you go and pick it up a couple of hours later.

Where we live it is a massive inconvenience to go and collect a parcel from the sorting office. Is this even allowed right now? Having it redirected to the local post office cost £1.50 last time I used this service.

I just find it easier to answer the door to pick up deliveries. It only takes a few seconds. Although, in reality DH usually answers the door when I am working as his office is by the front door.

I live in 2021, and like the vast majority of people, I know when a parcel is expected. You often get a notification to the nearest 2 hours it's due. So I will look out for it. Same with any other 'delivery.' If it's my birthday, I will (again,) be on the lookout, because I usually get flowers, and several packages... Apart from that, I will not answer the door if I am not expecting anything, (or anyone...)

And I live in a nice quiet rural area where nothing is ever stolen off doorsteps. You must live in quite a rough area. Maybe you should move.

Also, these days, you have a facility to create a safe space for the courier/postie to drop off your parcel. Mine is my shed. You obviously have the internet to enable you to do this, or you wouldn't be posting here.

Why would you go all the way to the sorting office when you can easily allocate a safe space to leave it near your home? You can even arrange for it to be delivered to your local Argos or Morrisons or similar, where you can pick it up at your convenience...

Why make life so difficult for yourself? Why on earth would you answer the door to every single knock? Confused

You seem quite agitated and annoyed that people do things differently to you. Why is that? So, not everyone likes to answer the door to every Tom, Dick, and Harry. So what? Confused

I once had a cat who would tap the neighbours' door knocker every morning with his paw.

They opened the door to him every day, bless them, and fed him.

I later found out the cat was being fed by several neighbours (as well as generously by us).
He was one smart and surprisingly slim cat.
@Koalababy please come back to the thread to update us. I’m worried your NDN has done you in 😳
... and when the police go through her phone/laptop and see her posting history on here, they'll know it was the NDN wot done it!

That’s nice that your postie can access your shed. I do have a lovely large shed. However, my house is three storey mid terrace so shed is not accessible by the postie. I don’t have a porch ( did look into having one but the “rules” in this area made it too expensive) so no “safe place”. I just find it easier to answer the door .....

I have a ring doorbell so can shout at doorbell ringers from my bed

Ginfordinner · 19/02/2021 12:35

I have just remembered that we have CCTV so we can see who is at the door as well. D'oh!

Skysblue · 19/02/2021 12:46

Depends on neighbour. Over the ten years I’ve been here I’ve got locked out twice and she’s got locked out once. Each time we knocked on neighbours door, nipped through house and got in back door.

I’d be pretty upset if I was locked out and she didn’t answer door!

That said if neighbour a pita always complaining about something then I would... Still open the door, because if ignored that kinda behaviour tends to escalate.

You wouldn’t shout ‘HELP!!! I’m locked out!!!’ ?

Some people are very obviously very uncomfortable if someone else's phone rings and doesn't get answered!

Well, if it was someone I was with and not, say, a random person on a train, I'd hate it.

I'd much rather they answered it or, if they didn't want to be bothered while I was with them, had put it on mute.
Or possibly vibrate, if they were screening calls.
