Reporting neighbours for reserving a parking space with cones

Fully happy to admit I Abu, obviously too much time on my hands.

We live on street where it's all street parking for terraced housing. The couple opposite everyday the lady leaves the house, man runs out with parking cones to save the parking space. They have upgraded to parking cones it used to be the wheelie bins.

Aibu to report them to the council? Parking ban be limited but you can usually park a few houses up or down and most times outside your own home.

It just really riles me and to be honest it's dangerous.

Dh thinks I'm being a busy body

I live on a road like this and it would wind me up to irrational levels!

I understand it from their perspective as we all have our preferred parking spaces (and yes, I get a little irritated when someone parks in 'my' space but I know I'm BVU!)...Their behaviour though is unneighbourly, petty and selfish.

Perhaps you could tell them to watch the Sarah pascoe joke about this same thing?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 16/02/2021 12:21

StanfordPines, Quite. I interpreted the post differently, not that OP shouldn't be looking out of the window but that sitting and navel-gazing rather than doing something (about the parking) was a bit of a job-not-done.

I could be wrong though and I take your point.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 16/02/2021 12:21

I'd knock it on the head via the council. Because once one person starts reserving 'their' parking space others start to as well, then you've got "You've parked in my space" arguments. They don't own the road and if there's still space to park relatively near their house then there's no need to be coning spaces off.

We had it round here for a while when people were using bins to mark out 'their' spaces outside their houses and the person who spray-painted their own disabled bay and AFAIK the council issued letters saying it wasn't acceptable unless exceptional circumstances (removals lorry, skip etc). Of course, we all knew who it was as their house number was painted on the bin Grin

YoniAndGuy · 16/02/2021 12:22

Just park there if you need to, move the cones if they're blocking anything, smile and wave. Leave a little note on the road ready for Sprinter which says WE CAN SEE YOUR GOOLIES WHEN YOU RUN IN YOUR DRESSING GOWN.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot1 · 16/02/2021 12:25

I see outside where I used to park, people leave cones. I'm tempted to go and move them some days. I parked there once pre-cones and had a note to leave the drive free. It was not a dropped kerb, I was unable to park in my space due to building works and the space in front of her house was listed as one of the "reasonable" places to park in the planning permission.

I was so tempted to write a note back. I even typed it up. I didn't post it though.

Still wish I had Grin

I have this over the road from me. Some prick with a massive renault believes its his god-given right to park outside his house and woebetide anyone that parks there. He is also the only one who has his two wheels on the pavement too.

His 'defence' is that he is disabled. Fair enough. The council have a scheme to paint bays for blue badge holders within permit areas. All he has to do is apply for one. It would save him a lot of hassle but would reduce my entertainment. For the record, he has a very physical job judging by the massive company signed van he wedges into 'his' space sometimes so he not apparently so disabled that he cannot walk 20m to his car.

Its hilarious when he arrives at his house and someone is in 'his' space. He leans on the horn, regardless of what time it is, expecting whoever it is to scurry from their home and move their motor. Noone ever does so he blocks next doors driveway, parking millimetres from the offending car. So many arguments with just about every neighbour, including me. He used to have cones but I would move them, and I reported him to the police for abusing me in the street when he saw me getting out of my car. The cones are now gone.

I would go and move their cones and put my car there. Especially if you are wfh so your car may not move for a few days. I'm a contrary bitch though.

Benfoldslanded · 16/02/2021 12:31

My road has parking only on one side. One neighbour thinks the space directly outside her house is hers. I don't know where she thinks people living on the opposite side should park. I've seen her completely lose her shit at the audacity of other people daring to park outside her house. Sad thing is has worked. All the neighbours are too scared to park there.

Covidcorvid · 16/02/2021 12:34

I’d move the bins to the next street.

SlothMama · 16/02/2021 12:35

It's annoying but what are the council going to do?

Londontown12 · 16/02/2021 12:36

I would leave it there may be a reason !
I have psoriatic arthritis in my hands and yesterday when I came home with a big food shop someone had parked in my spot outside house what they don’t realise it’s a pain literally carrying heavy bags without having the added distance to walk to my house 😞
I won’t ever say anything but if I had the nerve I’d put cones there as well if I didn’t think it wud cause uproar some people are only trying to make their lives easier x

Xenia · 16/02/2021 12:37

My sons own houses (currently let out) on roads with 2 up 2 down terraced houses and no garages.Parking is residents only in one and free in the other. Both are difficult. The resident parking one is worst and we saw an incident in December when we were in the house of someone completely blocked in front and back and neighbours coming out to look etc.

On the other one when we had a workman with van last month the workman got there early and put wheelie bins out to reserve the space and then presumably left (may be he lived near by?) arrived after 9 with the van to do the work. That felt reasonable for a one off given his heavy tools.

Magnificentmug12 · 16/02/2021 12:37

I wouldn’t mention it- if ever the road is unexpectedly busy you know you have a space reserved for you. Move the cones. (Although I wouldn’t move them because I’m a complete wimp and would rather park on the next street!) I know, I’m a loser!

Lalapurple · 16/02/2021 12:37

I would just move the cones.

rawalpindithelabrador · 16/02/2021 12:38

Permanently relocate their cones, local dump is a good place.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 16/02/2021 12:39

OP I REALLY want you to move the cones, park there, then stack the cones outside the door thanking them for reserving a space for you and letting them know what time you'll need it tomorrow.

In fact, where do you live? I'll do it. I thrive off petty neighbour shit like this.

Doingitaloneandproud · 16/02/2021 12:41

I'd move the cones and park there, you don't buy the road outside your house. I do feel for those who are disabled but they can apply for a disabled space to be put in. Ultimately if you want a house with parking, pay for one with a drive or a registered space. Otherwise it's simply a free for all and no one can complain.

MrMucker · 16/02/2021 12:42

I don't agree that they are being entitled by placing the cones there.
They might genuinely need to park outside their house, and by placing the cones then if traffic passes by looking for a space then they are more likely to look at that space as a last resort. That might be their intention.
It's just cones.
If they put a note saying "this is our space, don't park here" that's different.
One poster said "I'd park there on purpose just to annoy"
Just why? They clearly want to park there, you clearly want to stop them having what they want...simply to spite them?
I do agree should move the cones if nowhere to park, but honestly being annoyed is ridiculous.
What happened to talking to neighbours?!

Lovemusic33 · 16/02/2021 12:49

One of my neighbours does this too,we have off road parking spaces but they are not designated so it’s ‘first come first serve’, neighbour pots cones and various other items in the space when he leaves for work. I have been tempted to move them and park there just to piss him off.

Nith · 16/02/2021 12:49

How is it dangerous when someone parking there isn't?

Letshavesometea · 16/02/2021 12:50

Mr mucker you don't think placing cones and effectively reserving themselves a space on a public road is a sense of entitlement? Imagine if everyone on the street did this!

You've got to be joking

WhoStoleMyCheese · 16/02/2021 12:50

If they had one car between them and were annoyed at not being able to park in front of their own home I’d leave them alone and not be such a prick.
Otherwise fair game.

Letshavesometea · 16/02/2021 12:50

Its the same as someone reserving a sun lounger on my tacky all inclusive holiday by putting a towel on it. Drives me mad

ApolloandDaphne · 16/02/2021 12:51

I would move the cones and park there. I would want to see what the reaction would be. I can't believe no-one in the street has done this yet.

sillysmiles · 16/02/2021 12:53

If you are wfh, assumedly you are not out and about in your car and struggling to get parking, why does what they do bother you?

What impact is it having you your life?

I know life is boring at the moment, but reporting them makes their life more miserable and has no improving impact on your life - why would you?
I just don't understand this mentality at all.

SofiaMichelle · 16/02/2021 12:56

@ScarfaceCwaw

Sure, you can report her, if you want to turn yourself into the kind of miserable overinvolved busybody that everyone hates plus bore and annoy the poor council sod that has to tell you politely to bog off.

Everyone can park close to their house. There is literally no problem. Go and find something better to think about. Do a free OU course or start some virtual volunteering or something.

Do you use cones or bins to 'reserve' your space?
