To buy a loaf sofa without having sat on it?

They are quite expensive but look gorgeous and I love the bright colours. Does anyone have one? Good, bad, indifferent?

You're going to have to give us a clue.

SaltyTootsieToes · 15/02/2021 21:01

When I was looking for a new sofa two years ago, we went all over looking at sofas and sitting in them. There were big differences in sofas that looked very similar on line

With loaf I found the sofas in the show room were quite low down to the ground.

Floobydo · 15/02/2021 21:02

I have one (& a loveseat). They are beautiful and gets heaps of compliments. The love seat is super comfy but I’m afraid to say the sofa is just ok. The cushions require a lot of plumping and I wouldn’t buy one again tbh.

SheBangsTheDrums1 · 15/02/2021 21:02

We have a crumpet sofabed and a little sweetie- best sofas ever! No regrets! So comfy and gorgeous. Crumpet in particular is deep for curling up on and just the right amount of squidge. It needs plumping (just a quick shake/turning over of cushions) but currently this is still part of the fun.

Which ones are you considering? And which colours? Smile

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/02/2021 21:05

We have just bought one unseen. Negatives - very low, I’d go for higher legs. Velvet shows every flipping mark.

Pros-so cosy and comfy.

Ethelfromnumber73 · 15/02/2021 21:07

We have two and a chair. They look fabulous. None of them are comfortable. I wouldn't do it again.

BadEyeBri · 15/02/2021 21:10

Thanks everyone. I guess it's a no. I've got back problems and really need comfort. I think the cushion plumping would wear thin quickly

They say you learn something every day and today I learned there are "loaf" and "crumpet" sofas. Never heard of them before!

Some nice ones on the websites though.
I would not buy a sofa without trying it out in a showroom first.

Veuvestar · 15/02/2021 21:11

I sold mine on.
It was way too low. Everyone kind of rolled off it.
And you just ended up lying on it, or slouching back. I do have a back problem though.

Gemma2019 · 15/02/2021 21:18

We've got the Wodge - it looks stunning but is bloody uncomfortable. I got it virtually new from FB marketplace and understood why after about two hours.

Mumtothelittlefella · 15/02/2021 21:35

Love ours! It’s the pudding and is my favourite sofa. It’s in the toy room so gets a hammering but we got the velvet and it cleans so much better than anything else we have. It’s got low feet but it’s not a low sofa at all - it’s plump. Like sitting on a giant marshmallow yet it’s firm for my bad back.

About to buy another and had a virtual shopping trip yesterday which was really useful. Great service.

TheLette · 15/02/2021 21:38

I was looking for sofas (in 2017) and went to various showrooms to try them. I loved the loaf ones but I found them far too squishy, kind of sunk into them and almost found it difficult to get out of them again. So a no from me. We went with a sofa.com bluebell sofa in the end which is stylish, comfy and has decent support, in case helpful.

Beachcomber74 · 15/02/2021 21:39

Check out Trade Secrets that have lots of end of line loaf sofas and do online sales now.

TheLette · 15/02/2021 21:40

On the other hand, I'm very pleased with other loaf furniture - we have bedside tables and a beautiful French style bed. We also owned glass coffee and side tables but sadly had to sell them once we realized they were horribly incompatible with small children.

Lovelydovey · 15/02/2021 21:41

Definitely try sofas in person - I hated almost all of the sofas I tried as they seem to be too deep for my little legs and I either slump or sit bolt upright in the middle of the seat with no backrest.

carlycornwall · 15/02/2021 21:42

I have a loaf sofa. Right now I'm sitting on my other sofa looking at itL it's very pretty but very uncomfortable. I wouldn't have bought it if I'd tried it.

ilovewinterpansies · 15/02/2021 21:48

I have loaf sofas - a Dixie and the other "sprung" one (plain back, can't remember the name now). They both look like they have one big seat cushion the whole way across.

The others with plump cushions look great when plumped but are too squishy for me. The sprung ones are great, I love mine.

Definitely go for the higher legs. The normal standard low legs are bordering on ridiculous, they're practically floor level!

LesLavandes · 15/02/2021 21:50

I was so excited to eventually get to Loaf to choose my sofa.

Big disappointment. So low, and deep. Very in comfortable. Please don't buy without trying. Concept amazing. End product not good

JohnMiddleNameRedactedSwanson · 15/02/2021 21:52

Even with regular plumping they end up looking a bit flat and sad after a few years. If you like the overstuffed look you are better with sofas which have a foam core wrapped with feathers or fibre.

If you have short legs your feet won’t touch the ground!

imsorryihaventaclue · 15/02/2021 21:57

I have a loaf sofa and absolutely love it. Velvet, looks stunning and has worn really well. I did spend about 3 hours in the showroom sitting on every sofa several times to whittle it down to the most comfortable. I can’t imagine buying a sofa without trying it out

Laiste · 15/02/2021 22:04

@LesLavandes What is the concept? If you know what i mean? What is their selling angle. They seem very £££.

Haffiana · 15/02/2021 22:04

I tried the ones in John Lewis after someone on here raved about them.

Such a disappointment - you can't actually sit on them as none of the dimensions allow a sitting back position as they were far too deep, only a semi reclining, half folded slump. Too soft to support you.

I would imagine they would be great for lying down lengthways, but nothing else. Fabrics were good and the colours were great though.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 15/02/2021 22:05

I bought a loaf sofa without sitting on it and while I do love it, it’s extremely comfortable (no plumping though), it is SO low, and deep, and impossible to gracefully get out of. It’s an event just to sit on it, I need to have at least an hour free to make it worth it and I have to make sure I take whatever drinks or snacks I might need, make sure the dogs have had a wee and the remote and my phone is within arms length Grin

saraclara · 15/02/2021 22:06

It amazes me that anyone would buy a sofa online. Before lockdown, I was trying to buy a sofa and lost count of the number of times I went up to one that looked perfect, sat down, and then got straight back up again!
There are SO many uncomfortable sofas out there!

brownet · 15/02/2021 22:09

I could buy a sofa without sitting on it, but i'm fussy about the height as i'm tall.
