To buy a loaf sofa without having sat on it?

They are quite expensive but look gorgeous and I love the bright colours. Does anyone have one? Good, bad, indifferent?

I would certainly never buy a sofa without sitting on it, a bed without lying on it or a car without driving it because comfort & utility takes precedence over fashion for me.

Thank you!

They're not Loaf (one Argos, one Dunelm) but I bought both mine online without seeing them/sitting on them and they're both great! I'm tall, so having a deep enough and tall enough seat is important. I just looked at the measurements and went for it. Very happy.

FossilisedFanny · 16/02/2021 11:37

I haven’t heard of Loaf sofas Blush and imagined you sitting on a very large uncut loaf of bread Grin

ethelredonagoodday · 16/02/2021 11:42

My bro has them, and they look lovely, but as many other PPs have said, they're very low and deep, and ultimately not very comfortable.

Verrucapepper · 16/02/2021 11:50

This is one of the best threads I’ve read in ages... Saved me £££ in buying a new loaf sofa! Love my old DFS but the leather is wrecked, and the seat is ruined as you roll into the middle. How expensive is recovering does anyone know?

IveMadeAHugeMistake · 16/02/2021 11:56

I really, really wanted one a few months ago. I'd love a deep, squishy sofa. But I want one with a chaise bit, and with that and the fact that once you change from the house fabrics to anything else the price jumps up, it just got too expensive.

So we ordered a Patterdale sofa from DFS instead (please nobody say you've got one and it's crap! 😆)

We've ordered off the internet because we live in a backwater and haven't got a car, so it'd be a mission and a half to get to / trawl round showrooms using the barely functional public transport system we have here.

I still drool over the Loaf website though, might see if I can squeeze in an armchair somewhere.

Mirrorxx · 16/02/2021 12:03

I’ve just ordered a loaf sofa. I managed to go to the showroom last year thinking I’d like the pudding but it was so uncomfortable. Ended up going for comfort over looks and ordering the crumpet

Someone asked about the sofa.com bluebell sofas. Our two are fab about 10 years old and still look amazing. Also have a Gower soda from DFS which is also good. Did try them all before buying, which I would recommend.

My dbro has 2 of the Bluebells, he loves them. He's 6'5 and doesn't find them too low.
Echobelly · 16/02/2021 12:37

I love the look of loaf sofas, I don't think I'd buy without sitting on a sofa though - I'm only just over 5ft, and some sofas just aren't comfortable for short people like me, so I do have to check. May be less of an issue if a more average height.

problembottom · 16/02/2021 12:41

I have this Loaf Floppy Jo sofa from John Lewis:

www.johnlewis.com/floppy-jo-large-lhf-corner-end-sofa-by-loaf-at-john-lewis/brushed-cotton-gunmetal/p3410992

It is the squishiest, deepest, comfiest sofa. Everyone who sits on it falls in love with it. Apart from elderly rellies that is - DP’s mum and my dad can’t get up again!

Veuvestar · 16/02/2021 18:00

Problembottom- but that would be very uncomfortable for some people!
Looks fab though
It’s very subjective

Runnerduck34 · 16/02/2021 18:08

Its a risk, they do.look gorgeous but are expensive to buy without actually having sat on one first , do they have a showroom somewhere you can visit after lockdown?
They also.look really deep, I say this as a short person who hates it if my legs stick out like a childs when sitting on a sofa😂 so i would really check all measurements

Onedropbeat · 16/02/2021 18:09

We wanted one and went to their St Albans showroom
Glad we did as they were so low my parents would have never been able to visit

Redskinsucks · 16/02/2021 18:18

I wanted a loaf but got a navy blue one from snug instead as similar look but a few hundred pounds less and i love it. Its quite firm and the cushions look squishy but are surprisingly supportive. Couldnt recommend enough.

HolaChicos · 16/02/2021 18:26

I wouldn't buy a sofa I hadn't sat on. We ordered sofas from Sofology last year and they were so comfy!! The fuckers failed to deliver tho just before lockdown so we were back to square one after 3 months, anyway, we had a look in next, Their sofas looked lovely, but when we sat on them, but they weren't a patch on the ones we ordered from Sofology. Anyway, my point is, looks can be deceiving!

lazylump72 · 16/02/2021 18:50

I am struggling with the same dilema OP..I too got sucked in with the pink one on their tv ad..trying to refrain though as a i dont need one b I am skint and omg I so want one though lol

Serin · 16/02/2021 23:19

We looked at them before lockdown but they were all far too deep in the seat for me. I'm 5'9" so not exactly tiny.
The name is accurate, you really do load around on them rather than sit.

ditavonteesed · 17/02/2021 07:09

I have the same problem, they are gorgeous.
I also love the look of the snug sofa, the sofa.com bluebell is also gorgeous.

My sofa is so uncomfortable, it's fine to sit on but I want a sofa I an nap on.

Cheeseismymiddlename · 17/02/2021 07:19

@IveMadeAHugeMistake. Exact same here. Wanted a loaf but just to expensive for what and where we needed it so have ordered a Patterdale from DFS without seeing it first . Think it will be fine and we also managed to order 2 new single beds and mattresses pretty much for the same budget. So win win I hope.

MessAllOver · 17/02/2021 07:48

They are very, very low as pp have said.
My DH is 6ft3 and, when we tried them out in the showroom, his knees were practically touching his chin.
I'm a fairly average 5ft5 and I found most of them far too low.

Turns out squishy sofas can cause back pain.

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 17/02/2021 11:41

It massively depends on how you use your sofa. If you want to sit on it they are very deep and low so not terribly comfortable. If you are loungers who always have your feet up then they're lovely.
We've got a Schmoozer loveseat and a Bagsie sofa. The Bagsie is firmer but both are perfect for flopping about on. The ones with squishy cushions can look untidy very quickly.

UseOfWeapons · 17/02/2021 11:51

@TheLette

I was looking for sofas (in 2017) and went to various showrooms to try them. I loved the loaf ones but I found them far too squishy, kind of sunk into them and almost found it difficult to get out of them again. So a no from me. We went with a sofa.com bluebell sofa in the end which is stylish, comfy and has decent support, in case helpful.
Thanks, that’s really helpful! I was looking at a loaf sofa, but now I’ve seen the Bluebell, on sofa.com, I’m going to aim for that! 💐
EmotionallyEncumbered · 17/02/2021 21:49

For those thinking about the sofa.com bluebell, here's a pic of what ours looks like 99% of the time Hmm It is a few years old now, so maybe they've improved the design?
