To be utterly fed up of this Covid advert?

"Can you look them in the eye and tell them you are doing everything to stop the spread of covid".

Emotional manipulation at its best.

OP posts:
DeborahAlisonphillipa · 13/02/2021 08:44

Agree. They don’t have ones saying: can you look your oncologist in the eye and say you’ve never smoked? Can you look the A and E nurse in the eye when you’ve broken your leg horseriding and explain why you did something that might require healthcare?

malificent7 · 13/02/2021 08:48

The government should have lo locked down sooner and and harder with less mixed messages. We would have hated it though...covil liberties etc.

Songsofexperience · 13/02/2021 08:49

I'm with you OP. It's so patronising! To those of us who actually really stick to the rules especially. I loathe this ad.

SomewhereUpMyArse · 13/02/2021 08:49

@FakeRealist absolutely agree that it's down to the general population, collective responsibility and all that. It's all we've got.

But all studies indicate that the general population are complying very consistently and have been throughout.

I think this is just the government trying to get us to turn on each other rather than hold them to account for the death toll and damaged economy.

User133847 · 13/02/2021 08:49

@AllTheFloralCurtains

I hate it too, OP It's also massively fear-mongering; they're meant to be trying to ease people's minds, not make everyone feel even worse. The people who aren't doing what they should don't give a fuck, so won't give it a second thought. The people who do will have the fear of God put into them.
I think this has always been the problem.

The constant diet of fear has no effect on the criminally selfish folk it's targeted to. The ones who are following every rule and already scared, get even more scared or terrified to even leave the house.

NorbertMeubles · 13/02/2021 08:52

I hate that it is government messaging from a government who defended a bloke who popped out to visit a beauty spot on his wife's birthday for an eye test. And this ad is asking if we can look people in the eyes!? It is a patronising advert.

User133847 · 13/02/2021 08:53

@PicsInRed

Look at this nonsense, the state of it.
Why are the coffee shops even open then?
NoWordForFluffy · 13/02/2021 08:54

It's exactly this.

lunapeace · 13/02/2021 08:56

It has no effect on me I'm sorry to say. If the government wanted an advert to work, they should have shown a twenty year old in a car accident with no emergency services to help. A young child with a febrile convulsion and no ambulance for them i.e. what would really happen if the NHS was overwhelmed.

MoltenLasagne · 13/02/2021 09:02

There's that stupid "can you say you can't work from home" on a bus stop near me. Yeah because the poor sods queuing for the bus in -5 are really choosing to go into the office/factory rather than doing so because otherwise they could lose their jobs.

The government CHOSE to give employers flexibility - they don't get to them blame employees for having to keep their jobs.

User133847 · 13/02/2021 09:02

@TwelvePaws

What would you prefer? What sort of ad would you like?

Ones that show the reality of dying from covid, the effort put in by medical teams to save these people. It’s not pleasant, it can be brutal for patients and medical professionals. People on here say these advert don’t work, so maybe some real, hard to see footage that we have to see in reality, daily might work. We couldn’t possibly show that though, it might upset people, the same people who are breaking rules. I’m past caring that I might upset someone to be honest. We’re all exhausted. I saw a thread moaning about the footage shot in hospitals, it was too much every night apparently. Maybe deal with it every day and then see if you want to break rules.

What effect is it going to have when most people are following the rules?

The selfish will stay selfish.

ChairinSage · 13/02/2021 09:02

I'm numb to it now, it just washes over me and I've run out of energy to care. Maybe that makes me a bad person, but I don't think I'm the only one.

RaspberryCoulis · 13/02/2021 09:05

Victim blaming.

If you catch Covid then it's your own fault, you clearly broke the rules and didn't do "all you could", and now you're in hospital and our brave NHS heroes are literally risking their lives to treat you, you selfish Covidiot. Hmm But it's been this way right from the start with "don't kill granny".

We don't tell people it's their own stupid fault they have flu, or their child gets chicken pox.

I've seen that ad as well. It results in me muttering "yes I bloody well can say that, seeing as I'm a community support worker so have to go out into the community".

Some people are going to the office even though they can work just as well at home. I know people that were voluntarily going into offices for social interaction and to escape their kids despite all management wfh and encouraging everyone to do so. These people who volunatarily went to the office were catching trains and buses.

Obviously the offices in question should have completely closed and changed the entry codes to prevent it.

There should be fines for employers if people are in their workplaces when they could be working at home rather than posters. £200 fine per person per day for jobs that could reasonably be done at home would help.

Hibernatingnation · 13/02/2021 09:32

Haven't seen them, don't intend to, the beauty of not having live tv. I really hope people aren't exposing their children to these pathetic fear mongering attempts. They're particularly gauling given hospital is the place you are most likely to catch covid.

SomewhereUpMyArse · 13/02/2021 09:34

Oh do give over. The only people in our office are the plebs who go on buses to open post and fulfill other menial paper based tasks so that all the senior staff can sit at home and whinge on their work blogs about how many foreign holidays they've had to cancel.

I know because I'm one of the plebs.

And I can tell you that it's pretty fucking unnerving to know you're the most senior person in the office and have been for the best part of a year despite being a pleb.

None of us are in there for fun. Who the fuck catches covid ridden buses and spends a day in an enclosed space with other people, leaving their lockdown kids either at home or in a non socially distanced school, for fun?

I'd much rather be at home all the time but I'm classed as a key worker and I've been told it's essential I go in otherwise I'll lose my job. Same for all the rest of us putting ourselves at risk and being responsible for an entire commercial premises while earning fuck all.

Lemons1571 · 13/02/2021 09:42

I think they’re designed to keep compliance up while the vaccine is being rolled out. And are aimed at those who’ve followed the rules up to now but are thinking of giving up (plenty of people on here are posting that they’ve reached their limit and intend to see family now).

I agree with a pp that it would be better to show non-covid trauma and illness but with no available ambulance to save or treat them.

The ads have the same effect on me as seeing the Africa people starving adverts asking for donations. It’s grim but removed from my life. Apart from donating a few quid, what can I do? I can hardly become a humanitarian aid worker with 3 kids can I. It’s largely the fault of corrupt government.

I expect the next covid advert to scream “STAY AWAY FROM YOUR WINDOWS”. Or perhaps “WAIT UNTIL MIDNIGHT BEFORE YOU RISK PUTTING YOUR BIN OUT”

What happened to the red/black PEOPLE WILL DIE poster boards as you go into Asda? Are they gone now? Or replaced by HOW DARE YOU EAT FOOD?

Zenithbear · 13/02/2021 09:45

They are as annoying as it gets.
Are we doing everything?
It is all bollocks for the weak minded.

What about the nurse who house shares with my niece that has lots of friends over, sees her boyfriend and family and possibly gave my niece Covid?
Is she doing everything?

fluffi · 13/02/2021 10:07

@SomewhereUpMyArse I'm sorry you have to go to your office and sounds like you're not happy about it and wish it was different.

I know its hard to believe and I don't understand it myself but there are parents leaving their children at home with the other non-working parent or other help for "peace" or to see other colleagues. Or colleagues that live alone going in to see others reasons. They seem to think they are invincible to covid so seem to be happy getting trains and buses. Honestly I don't get it at all.

It makes me sad because they are increasing the risk for everyone else like yourself.

Sorry, I am not sure why that posted twice. Blush

Tiktokersmiracle · 13/02/2021 11:06

Because they are already gearing up to blame the public.
There will inevitably be a public enquiry into the covid crisis.
And the same as with Hillsborough, Grenfell and every other one, they will blame "the public" or someone else, the Tories will never ever blame themselves.
They will blame faceless "covidiots" for ignoring the rules. They will blame people for not taking their own health seriously.
They won't blame the chronic underfunding and under investment in the NHS they have been responsible for for over a decade. They won't blame the fact Hunt et al ignored the findings in the Cygnus Report. They won't blame Boris for being far more concerned by Brexit and his girlfriend and didn't turn up for Cobra meetings. They won't blame Valance and Whitty for ignoring WHO. They won't blame Cummings for saying the economy was more important, or the MPs who said they put a ring of protection round care homes yet sent covid positive elderly people back to them to spread it. They won't blame Boris for his "I was shaking hands with Covid patients" speech. They won't admit that Eat Out To Help Out and the rapid return to schools for causing the second wave.
Jennick was on GMB a week odd ago and he even said they "took it seriously" when Boris caught it. So fuck the rest of us presumably, it only became important when Boris got it.

Nope. It will be all us plebs fault. Not all of course. They will say that some of you did what you could to protect the NHS. But they will say there were people who didn't and it's all their fault.

Scarlettpixie · 13/02/2021 11:10

They are meant to manipulate peoples emotions. Relying on common sense hasn’t worked. That said the government have a lot to answer for. ‘Eat out to help out’ ffs!

I don’t have a problem with the ads and yes I can look them eye so I don’t think they are aimed at me. I don’t watch much telly with ads though and can see they might get on your nerves if they were on every ad break.
