"Can you look them in the eye and tell them you are doing everything to stop the spread of covid".

Emotional manipulation at its best.

Given the monumental amount of people who have gone into hospitals and either ended up catching covid in there or catching it in there and dying from it, it's not a good look.

LunaHeather · 12/02/2021 20:32

@TwelvePaws

I wish the adverts were a bit more hard hitting to be honest, they’re very soft really.
What would you prefer? What sort of ad would you like?

To be honest, there's a number of ads mentioned here i've not seen as I avoid it all. But I avoid anything with ads as much as possible, mostly I see them on the buses and bus stops as I live in a main road.

I follow the law btw.

Graciebobcat · 12/02/2021 20:40

Yeah, don't mind all the others but this campaign is awful.

Can the government look us in the eye and say they have been doing everything can to stop the spread of covid? When last summer there was a big advertising campaign to get people to eat out? When they have only just now suggested measures to quarantine incoming travellers? When they deliberately underfunded the NHS for ten years, leaving it in no state to cope with a pandemic? Look to yourselves you fucking useless twats.

littlepattilou · 12/02/2021 20:42

@TheTreeThatSatDown YANBU at all!

I am not a covid denier, and I have been a 'good girl' all through the pandemic, wearing a mask, not going anywhere except food shopping once a week, and staying away from people, and barely seeing anyone - not seen DD since Christmas day - etc...

But (like many others,) I am SICK of it all now. And I HATE this bloody advert! It's not hard-hitting or heart wrenching; it's fucking patronising propaganda, and it boils my piss! Hmm

As a few people have said, what about footballe players who are swanning up and down, to name but one profession. (There are others!)

Some of us are isolated and behaving as we are being told, but others are flouting the rules constantly.

Like those twats travelling all the way from London to Shropshire, to 'take a photo' of the hills.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-shropshire-56008606

WHY? ConfusedThey would never normally do a 350 mile round trip to take a photo of the Shropshire Hills in February, in sub zero temperatures, with several inches of snow and slush all over the roads, and nowhere open, not even public toilets, pubs, cafes or anything? So why do it now? Hmm

They are just arseholes who are taking the piss, and trying to prove a point. They don't need to go, and they don't even want to; they are just attention-seeking arseholes. And it's people like them who are the a large part of the problem, and the reason we are stuck in this horrific never-ending episode of Black Mirror! Hmm

Control by fear at its finest

Beyondfedupnow · 12/02/2021 20:50

I didn’t take much notice of them really, the people they want to reach with the message don’t care anyway, like the pp teenage kids.
Until today I had only heard of local cases through friends of friends knowing someone who has it, today an old school friend, a healthy, slim 45 year old husband and father of 3 girls has been admitted to hospital. He’s very sick. It’s unnerved me.

TwelvePaws · 12/02/2021 20:59

Ones that show the reality of dying from covid, the effort put in by medical teams to save these people. It’s not pleasant, it can be brutal for patients and medical professionals. People on here say these advert don’t work, so maybe some real, hard to see footage that we have to see in reality, daily might work. We couldn’t possibly show that though, it might upset people, the same people who are breaking rules. I’m past caring that I might upset someone to be honest. We’re all exhausted. I saw a thread moaning about the footage shot in hospitals, it was too much every night apparently. Maybe deal with it every day and then see if you want to break rules.

Namechangeforthewin · 12/02/2021 21:00

Some people are just taking the piss though. I clean holiday let's and we are crammed with people. Essential workers apparently. Yes the gas guy I get that but film makers? I'm busier now than I was in summer. The advert upsets me as I've done all I humanly can to help with the pandemic and feels like we are going nowhere.

I think that's unlikely to make a difference, especially to those who've been in ICU with pneumonia etc or near death with other illnesses.

I think most of us have seen enough of the long drawn out deaths people have over time, slowly becoming incontinent and leaving rellies in utter despair that it will never end.

The people who haven't seen this stuff are probably children and teens and I think some of them have been scared out of their wits already.

The reality is that compliance is very high. But anger is too. These adverts might well increase anger.

There are several empty shops on the High road now. If I thought I could get away with it, I'd plaster them with signs saying "commit suicide - save the NHS".

But I nearly topped myself at the start of lockdown and I don't want to be the final straw for someone else as well.

99victoria · 12/02/2021 21:17

I mostly record things so I can fast forward through the adverts - more so since the start of the pandemic and all the awful adverts and public health announcement - those god awful ones they had right at the beginning!

If i accidently catch one live, I just mute the tv. Sick to the back teeth of it all. I'm not an idiot who's going to forget what I'm supposed to do in the fifteen minutes between ad breaks!

rawalpindithelabrador · 12/02/2021 21:23

I’m past caring that I might upset someone to be honest.

When then it's a good fucking thing you're not running the ads then. I've seen enough corpses already, including my own child. Seeing more isn't going to make people behave differently, it's just going to fuck people off or they switch it off and it's ENTIRELY inappropriate. Just fucking unbelievable. My father died from Covid a few days after Xmas.

TwelvePaws · 12/02/2021 21:28

rawalpindithelabrador

I’ve seen ‘enough corpses’ too. Let’s not make this into a competition. 🙄

ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 12/02/2021 21:29

@TwelvePaws

These adverts do have an effect, it has my 16 and 17 year olds shouting "F-off" at the TV because their life has been put on hold to 'protect' people they don't know and don't care about, they are both incredibly angry with it all.

Your children don’t care about other people? My kids are doing ok but are fed up with not being able to do normal things and see their friends. They still care about other people though, thankfully.

I agree with this. If your children genuinely don't care about other people, they have problems.
AccidentallyOnPurpose · 12/02/2021 21:49

This one is even more stupid.

Yeah I really,really can't work from home just like millions of other people. Wankers!

MichelleScarn · 12/02/2021 21:55

Same accidentally ill just squeeze a ward of patients like you Mr Poster Man in to my living room. I really can't work from home.

ViciousJackdaw · 12/02/2021 21:58

Perhaps I'm just more ancient than everyone else but if you think these ads are bad, you should have seen the AIDS ads back in the 80s. Then there were the Public Information films, each one designed to scare the living daylights out of you.

Where the hell has @rawalpindithelabrador tried to make it into a bloody competition?! They have shared about their child's death and that's your response? rawal I am so sorry you have had that happen.

Well my teenagers aren't exactly having a ball either but think god they know the reasons for this and aren't selfish and still care about others in society.

BonnieDundee · 12/02/2021 22:02

What is it hoping to achieve? If some is going to work is probably because they physically have to or their employer has said they have to

Yes. Where does this idea come from that we can all decide whether we work from home or not? Maybe some privileged staff can but most of us have to do what our employers say so why isnt it worded "can you look him in the eye and say that you really need your employees to be in work"
The thought that employees can dictate to their employer that they will not be coming in Grin

Horrified by pp whose DGM was sent home to be cared for by.vulnerable DM. Where is the accountability?

StrawberrySquash · 12/02/2021 22:06

The fact is we have all given/given up an awful lot. And it's been really hard. But time and again we've done yet another day WFH while we miss the office, homeschooled a kid, not hugged a friend who needed it, lost a business we spent years building up etc. etc.
So to be lectured and guilted is just so tone deaf. It makes me angry. Especially when the government has made multiple mistakes and acted corruptly.
I bloody well can look the poor covid patient in the eyes, how dare they suggest I can't.

YOU are the one suggesting people be subjected to this, not me. That was MY CHILD (I didn't get to see my father's corpse because we're not allowed to travel) I don't need you or anyone else to fucking ramrod this virus down my throat and further fuck up my surviving kids to get your 'I'm so hard done by' approach through to them. You're exhausted and blah blah blah, then bloody quit and get another job. I don't get to walk away from my child's being dead.
powershowerforanhour · 12/02/2021 22:10

It just brings out the inner pedant in me- no, I cannot say that I am doing all I can to stop the spread of covid because that would entail quitting my job and staying at home eating grass and leaves because making a Tesco delivery drivers come to me still puts them at some risk of covid. In fact, strictly speaking, to really do all we can to stop the spread, the entire global population needs to simultaneously and immediately commit suicide. We'd all be dead, like. But no covid. (Except the mink...I knew there was a flaw in the plan, dammit).

rawalpindithelabrador · 12/02/2021 22:11

When you're past caring whom you upset, that it might be someone on the verge of ending themselves, it's time to move on, because that's all shades of fucked up.

Duggeehugs82 · 12/02/2021 22:12

@TwelvePaws

I’m ok with the people who are breaking the rules to feel like they’re being ‘emotionally manipulated’, most probably couldn’t care less though. I don’t feel like I’m being emotionally manipulated because I’m doing everything that is advised.
I agree with this
Moomoolandmoomooland · 12/02/2021 22:12

As if anyone is going to stop and listen to Mark Strong (or someone who sounds very like him) on the radio and think 'I will stop being a twat now and do what Mark Strong says'
