To think you can't be 'greedy' if you're not overweight

Seems simple to me Confused

If you're not overweight then no matter what you consume you can't be 'greedy'

As you are a healthy weight and BMI and you're just eating to maintain that

Of course you can. Not everyone who's a healthy weight have healthy eating habits, or maintain their weight healthily.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 12/02/2021 15:04

I’m greedy. Very.

I do a lot of exercise.

I’m not sure if my greed is my body’s way of reacting to my greed! I try to be greedy with healthier food.

Peanutbutterblood · 12/02/2021 15:04

Yabu say I make a cake, to share between 8 people but one person eats 4 slices, then the others dont get their fair share and the other person is greedy

MaxNormal · 12/02/2021 15:04

Of course you can. For instance if you eat more than your fair share and deprive others of their treats etc.

madmara · 12/02/2021 15:05

Of course you can!

If a 6 pack of cupcakes are bought for a family of 6 and one person eats 3 of them, leaving 2 members of the family without, that person is greedy no matter what their BMI is.

What is the background to this?

44PumpLane · 12/02/2021 15:05

Greed isn't just about food.

But also, of course you can be greedy but just with exceptional self control, or bulemia (sorry I've no idea how to spell that), or some other form of disordered eating.

I am greedy but I am also a healthy weight, because I spend my life putting in some weight then losing it..... I have to be careful.

An alcoholic is still an alcoholic even if they haven't had a drink for years.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/02/2021 15:06

I'm not talking about 'sharing' anything - I'm just saying that people who buy their own food can't be greedy if they only eat to a healthy weight no matter how much pasta/pizza/garlic bread they consume

Catwoman123 · 12/02/2021 15:06

I'm greedy and a size 8..its possible

KatherineOfGaunt · 12/02/2021 15:07

Yes you can. You're greedy if you want more than your fair share.

The word only relates to overweight people when they're deemed to have eaten more than they're share.

If your BMI is healthy but you still ate most of the biscuits, you'd be greedy.

MaliceOrgan · 12/02/2021 15:07

What a silly post. Is it yet another fat shaming one?

LaurieFairyCake · 12/02/2021 15:08

44pumplane

That analogy definitely doesn't work as alcoholics who don't drink are dry drunks - the desire to drink may be there but they don't actually drink Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 12/02/2021 15:08

I assume that this is referring to one of the 'greedy husband threads'.

For someone not to be greedy, they also need to be not eating an amount of food that's above what the family budget can afford and also not taking more than their fair share of the food in the house, leaving other family members to go without.

If a family of 4 can afford 4 nice things so they buy 4 and one of the family members eats two of them so one person misses out because they didn't eat it the second said food item entered the house, then the person who ate two things, without considering the other members of the family, is greedy, whether or not they're overweight.

Ponoka7 · 12/02/2021 15:09

I know someone who rode miles on a bike just so they could eat multi packs of crisps. He was normal body weight. But he was greedy. Likewise builders who eat a oack of mars/snickers a day. They don't need to eat crap in quantities, they do so because they are greedy.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/02/2021 15:09

Definitely NOT fat shaming Shock

Yes in response to the myriad of threads where people slag off teenagers who are whippet thin and eat an entire loaf of bread and cheese to maintain their hollow legs

They are NOT Greedy !

Are you sure? I'm a size 6. Yesterday i had a miserable day, i went to Tesco and bought a HUGE chocolate birthday cake and ate 3/4 of it by myself. Like, 12 people's worth. Does that not make me greedy?
combatbarbie · 12/02/2021 15:11

Of course you can be normal weight and be greedy. My DH will sit and eat a family size pack of crisps to himself.... That's greedy.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/02/2021 15:11

I think 'greedy' has negative connotations

And a builder would eat a whole packet of Mars Bars because it's the quickest calories during a day where they're burning off 5000 calories - thus proving my point it isn't greed, it's just maintaining their body weight

OP posts:
KatherineJaneway · 12/02/2021 15:12

Of course you can be.

You can finish all the 'nice' food in the house in a binge and still be slim.

Poppins2016 · 12/02/2021 15:12

Hmm... is your theory along the lines of 'fat people eat too much and don't need the extra calories because it's just being converted to excess weight' vs 'thin people need all the calories they eat because they burn it off/maintain a healthy weight regardless of what they eat'?

I think I'd argue that anyone can be greedy. I have a decent metabolism and don't put on weight easily, but that doesn't mean I'm not greedy when it comes to my favourite foods!

LaurieFairyCake · 12/02/2021 15:13

No Poppins - I do not think people who carry extra weight are doing so solely because they overeat (I'm overweight and don't overeat) - being overweight can be because of a myriad of reasons

OP posts:
Dixiechickonhols · 12/02/2021 15:13

Of course you can. I’m a healthy bmi and no one needs to eat how many kitkats/timeouts I’ve just had. I would describe myself as being greedy. We have loads of biscuits/chocolates in the box so I’m not denying anyone their share of biscuits either (plus no one else likes those 2)

Muskox · 12/02/2021 15:15

Are you saying it’s absolutely fine and not unhealthy to eat a whole pack of mars bars (as long as you’re not overweight)? Really?

joystir59 · 12/02/2021 15:15

I'm a healthy weight and BMI and live a healthy lifestyle, but I'm a food addict who has to consciously maintain my weight. I'm incredibly greedy when I start to put weight on.

AnnaSW1 · 12/02/2021 15:15

I'm greedy with chocolate. I resist some of my greed though which is the only reason why I'm not overweight Grin

ComtesseDeSpair · 12/02/2021 15:15

Is the definition of greedy simply “eating lots of food”? I don’t think it is. Greed is eating more than your fair share, or wanting to pile your plate with more food than you can possibly eat. Buying yourself a birthday cake and thoroughly enjoying eating the lot in one day isn’t greedy in itself. So you can be either thin or fat and greedy or not greedy.
