To think you can't be 'greedy' if you're not overweight

Seems simple to me Confused

If you're not overweight then no matter what you consume you can't be 'greedy'

As you are a healthy weight and BMI and you're just eating to maintain that

Eating more than the average person, if you maintain your weight in a healthy way (exercise/activity level rather than making yourself sick) does not make you greedy.

I knew a farmer about 30 years ago. I would be greedy if I ate what he did because I'm not an active person. He was a perfectly normal weight because he was working in a very active job, so not greedy.

On the other hand I knew another man who was very overweight. I once went to his house (he was the dad of the family) with some other people. I took a tiny polite portion the first go round for the food. Big mistake because anything left after others had taken their food ended up on this man's plate. My husband (then boyfriend) lived with them at the time and apparently this man was notorious for doing this. We went to a Chinese restaurant with them once and you had to count the pork balls to make sure you got your fair share. Now he was greedy.

DeadCertain · 12/02/2021 15:35

I don't take so much that I ever take more than my fair share though!!!

fullofhope100 · 12/02/2021 15:35

You are being V V V U. And I'm underweight for my height and build.
Dearie me OP.

jackieweaverhasauthorityhere · 12/02/2021 15:36

Depends what you mean. Do you simply mean 'eats a huge amount' or 'takes more than their share depriving others'? Either could be true of someone who's not overweight because everyone's metabolism and activity levels are different.

The second is understanding social conventions unless a child isn't fed sufficiently at home, and they are quick to fill their boots at parties etc.

The first definitely isn't anyone else business.

@LaurieFairyCake

Definitely NOT fat shaming Shock

Yes in response to the myriad of threads where people slag off teenagers who are whippet thin and eat an entire loaf of bread and cheese to maintain their hollow legs

They are NOT Greedy !

No way. YABU. Those teenagers are freaking greedy. Nobody needs to eat an entire loaf of bread or even half of one in one sitting. That's BS. And I hate how it's almost always men and boys getting a pass on this shit. It's inconsiderate.
Catwoman123 · 12/02/2021 15:39

I quite often hide chocolate from the rest of the family because I want it. I dont wat jt all in one day but the fact that I've hidden it makes me greedy.

Iektrikblankit · 12/02/2021 15:39

I think “greedy” is more about selfishness than mere overindulgence - eg if you eat the whole tub of ice cream but it’s rightfully yours and no one else wants any = not greedy. If you eat it all but it’s really meant to be shared with someone else, that’s greedy.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/02/2021 15:39

Loads of people have said that greedy has negative connotations- it very obviously does Hmm - it's a nasty, judgemental word that people are using too often about people eating just large meals !!!

Rather than about :

Selfishly eating someone else's food

OP posts:
prettyindarkblack · 12/02/2021 15:39

DH eats over 3000 calories of chocolate and crisps a DAY alone (not including the other beige shit he eats)
His BMI is 21 and he is toned and muscular.

HE IS GREEDY.

Yes this.
wibblewombat · 12/02/2021 15:40

Another fat shaming thread?

Nothing more miserable than being out for a meal with people who push their food around on their plate to look virtuous...sigh...

Gatehouse77 · 12/02/2021 15:41

My DS has a healthy weight and the only times I've called him greedy is when he's eaten the majority of something leaving others to go without. That's greedy but has no relation to his weight or what he chooses to eat.

So, yes. you can be greedy and not overweight.

Flippyferloppy · 12/02/2021 15:41

My dad will have seconds of everything at any meal, then munch through a packet of biscuits half an hour later. He has never been anywhere near overweight, in fact for most of his adult life he was borderline underweight.

Unfortunately I got my mum's genes where all female ancestors are obese. I manage to be a healthy weight but it's going to be a lifelong battle.

AnnLouiseB · 12/02/2021 15:42

I don’t think greed is about the amount you eat. There is a moral element to greed, and just eating a lot at one time isn’t immoral. It’s only greedy when you consume in a manner which deprives others, e.g. by using something up or leaving only a tiny share for others.

But even by your definition, it’s not limited to overweight people. A thin person could eat a whole cake in one sitting which would not be weight-maintaining behaviour.

Iektrikblankit · 12/02/2021 15:42

I don’t think anyone - regardless of whether they’re overweight or not - eating more than they “need” to is a moral transgression unless it deprives another person of their fair share

Frogartist · 12/02/2021 15:42

@LaurieFairyCake

I think 'greedy' has negative connotations

And a builder would eat a whole packet of Mars Bars because it's the quickest calories during a day where they're burning off 5000 calories - thus proving my point it isn't greed, it's just maintaining their body weight

But greedy doesn't mean "eating lots".

So when my ex made it his mission in life to eat all of the children's yoghurts and snacks and laugh at their being upset he'd eaten their packed lunches overnight when he could have eaten anything else in the fridge, freezer and cupboards that hadn't been bought for them, he was just maintaining his body weight?

I know. Not sure why I even bothered to post.

This is going to full of competitive under eating to make others feel bad, isn't it.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/02/2021 15:45

EXACTLY my point - people are using 'greedy' for 'eating lots'

My point is that some people (often teenagers, not exclusively boys) NEED to eat lots

Of course not. No one has said that. It's a given that most people are talking about food that it legitimately theirs to eat, rather than stealing food from the mouths of their children.

Mummy2Babba · 12/02/2021 15:46

I am 34 weeks pregnant, still a size 8 and can Definetly say I am greedy 😭. Even without being pregnant my eating habits are atrocious.
I literally seeing from cupboard doors and have usually eaten whatever I have ransacked the kitchen for before I leave the kitchen.
I have just had two iron infusions as I'm severely anemic but I also eat good meals as well.
Yes I think you can be greedy without being overweight!

Mummy2Babba · 12/02/2021 15:47

Swing** not seeing 😆

christmasathomeagain · 12/02/2021 15:47

@MaxNormal

Of course you can. For instance if you eat more than your fair share and deprive others of their treats etc.
Was just going to say similar! Just because you consume less calories than you use doesn't mean you can't be greedy and taking more than your share.
BaggoMcoys · 12/02/2021 15:48

If someone brought cakes into work and they were shared round and one person took several despite them not having reached everyone, I'd think they were greedy. If the cakes had been shared round, there were 5 left and only one person wanted them, I wouldn't think they were greedy. Both of those are regardless of weight.

When I hear of "greed", food and weight don't immediately jump to my mind, I think of money before food I think. Or more generally taking more than your fair share, or being tight/petty, not offering things round etc...whatever those things may be.

Oh don't be so bloody stupid! GrinGrin

DH is like a whippet because of a mix of a lot of exercise and good genes I suppose. He eats loads of calories of 'normal' food every day to keep himself going, but he's a greedy twat who will often eat all the chocolate in the house and leave the rest of us without any.

There's plenty of food in - lots of fruit, nuts, veg, but he wants the treat stuff. That's greed.
