To think you can't be 'greedy' if you're not overweight

Seems simple to me Confused

If you're not overweight then no matter what you consume you can't be 'greedy'

As you are a healthy weight and BMI and you're just eating to maintain that

@LaurieFairyCake

I think 'greedy' has negative connotations

And a builder would eat a whole packet of Mars Bars because it's the quickest calories during a day where they're burning off 5000 calories - thus proving my point it isn't greed, it's just maintaining their body weight

Lol! Of course it has negative connotations. It’s one of the seven deadly sins. It’s a word used to shame people.
BaggoMcoys · 12/02/2021 15:53

I don't comfort eat or anything. I'm underweight now and have to force myself to eat more than I want, but I don't think of that as being greedy. Even when slim but healthy, I had a big appetite and would eat larger meals than people around me, and I've never thought of that as being greedy either.

I think for me greed has to incorporate either selfishness or spitefulness maybe.. I haven't thought about it in this much detail before. Like if someone ate a huge pizza because they were starving, I wouldn't think they were greedy. However, if they ate the huge pizza either to stop another person having any out of spite, or just neglected to think that the other person may be hungry too, then I would think of that as greed.

Norwayreally · 12/02/2021 15:53

This is pretty bonkers. Some people struggle to gain weight despite eating a fuck load of junk all of the time. My DH never gains weight and he eats the same food I do, he isn’t most active than me either but I gain weight if I even smell a cake.

Mulhollandmagoo · 12/02/2021 15:54

@NeverDropYourMoonCup of course not, and you know full well that your situation doesn't apply here

ragged · 12/02/2021 15:56

OP needs to see my (skinny tall vegetable-dodging) 16yr old DS with sweetie bags or chips. "Gluttony" would be nice way of describing what happens.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 12/02/2021 15:58

I'd say that 'greedy' is more a state of mind. I would only apply the term if it referred to depriving others of food or a treat item by consuming more than your fair share. Teenager/builder/whoever with hollow legs, maintaining calories in/calories out balance. Nah.

Eugenieonegin · 12/02/2021 15:59

Greed is defined as a selfish and intense desire e.g for wealth, power or food. It is a negative word. Being greedy describes selfish behaviour, regardless of people’s weight.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 12/02/2021 16:01

You absolutely can. I'm greedy where there are cakes and treats around, the only thing stopping me being the size of a whale is exercise and the 5/2 diet.

NuniaBeeswax · 12/02/2021 16:02

This has to be one of the most stupid things I've ever read on this forum, and that's quite a feat.

TheChip · 12/02/2021 16:03

Say what now?

Chanjer · 12/02/2021 16:04

In the very narrow definition you've given it you are correct

You can't be greedy at no one's expense. Someone cannot refer to your whole chocolate cake or whatever as being greedy

Where gluttony is different from greed is where a thin person eating a whole cake resides

If you're eating past the point you need to you're doing something but it's not being greedy imo

user1471554720 · 12/02/2021 16:04

There ate different types of greed. People can be very greedy if they dump kids on grandparents regularly so they can go to pop concerts, outings.

People can be greedy if they have to go to their gym for exercise at all costs, leaving their partner dealing with children and homeschooling. Ironically, it is often the people who are slightly overweight, (who have no free time, doing all child and house related things and working) are the most selfless people I know.

As we age, we have to be a bit greedy regarding time for exercise, in order to stay at an average size.

Ellie56 · 12/02/2021 16:04

Various dictionaries define "greedy" as:

wanting more money, power, food, etc. than you really need

the desire to have more of something, such as food or money, than is necessary or fair.

Having an excessive desire or appetite for food.

So yes you can be skinny and greedy.

user1471554720 · 12/02/2021 16:04

Are, not ate

sunshineandshowers40 · 12/02/2021 16:06

Of course you can! I ate 4 packets of crisps today, which was very greedy of me but I do exercise and am a healthy weight.

Misericordia · 12/02/2021 16:07

When I was a kid I was always slim, but if ever I was bought chocolate I'd eat it all at once and to excess. Eg. A whole advent calendar, a whole selection box eaten on Christmas day. I wasn't responding to being deprived or anything, I was just greedy.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 12/02/2021 16:08

@honeylulu

Greedy doesn't just mean eating more than your calorie requirements. There is an intrinsic selfishness to it.

My Dad isn't overweight (very tall and also active) but is very greedy. if for example my mum had bought four cupcakes for us each to have with afternoon tea and he liked the look of them, he would go and get them out of the cupboard before teatime, when no one else was around and plough through all four. This sort of thing happened a lot and he would always say "I was hungry, so what, I am not fat" and shrug. Even though he knew it was the sort of thing that was a "one each" treat and he had done it secretly so he couldn't be challenged about sharing until he'd already cheerfully wolfed the lot.

OMG, what a selfish knob!

I have had thin people in my extended family who think they can't be greedy, that only fat people can. They did some utterly selfish things with treat food - not sure if that makes them selfish or greedy or both.

BilboBercow · 12/02/2021 16:09

Basically what you're saying op, is that only fat people are greedy

Sparklesocks · 12/02/2021 16:09

No deffo not. You can be greedy at any weight.

TheChip · 12/02/2021 16:10

Why do you think that you can only be greedy if you're overweight?

I'm underweight and I can most definitely be greedy at times.

RedLlama · 12/02/2021 16:12

I’m a healthy weight and I am greedy. If there is a multi pack of something, I will eat them all. I don’t need to, but I do because I am pig. I have just eaten 3 creme eggs all in one sitting.

ChonkyChook · 12/02/2021 16:12

MN is all fat bastard husbands leaving their poor wives (those that don't live on air and mist) eating scraps from bins, and strapping teens who eat eggs like Gaston.

MN is mental about food. Except that poster who ate 32(?) Creame eggs at once. She was sound.

Crockof · 12/02/2021 16:12

Teen boys are a good example. Eating a massive plate of roast dinner and having a second massive plate including finishing all the veg = growing lad who needs the extra food
Eating an entire loaf of toast and butter or a whole multipack of choc/crisps = greedy. Its not just the type of food its the fact its needed for others.

LetItGoGo · 12/02/2021 16:13

Greedy is such a negative word.

I enjoy my food.

CarlottaValdez · 12/02/2021 16:13

To be honest I just think you don’t know what greedy means. Of course you can be greedy and not overweight it can be completely unrelated to food.
