You always make such a good point @DGRossetti!

I guess I just always figured we’d evolved as an intelligent society. But sheesh if the last few years have shown us anything, we really haven’t.

Roussette · 16/02/2021 16:40

DGR maybe I was unfair calling it a cult, yes. It was just so prominent in my teens and they actively stopped you in the street to join.

What about Jehovahs witnesses that come and knock on your door ?

And I've been stopped by a Mormon on the tube before now. (This was before the carriages were a through walk and you couldn't escape).

Roussette · 16/02/2021 16:49

Well.... yes....

You want cults, try the Maharishi Grin

People want certainties
the greedy will ALWAYS prey on that

Billy Graham was so notorious that Frank Zappa sang about him
and now Billy's son is being a fool

PS
Here is why Texas is having blackouts .....
They have a separate power grid from the rest of the country
so they do not have to comply with federal efficiency rules

You mean they have a sovereign grid ...
ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2021 17:39

Yup, and the North West corner is their equivalent of NI Wink

Sorry, this means nothing to me as I am not an engineer nor do I have much basic comprehension of the Sciences. I understand the words individually but cannot make sense of them as a whole. Could someone kindly explain in words of one scientific syllable at a time, please?
ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2021 17:41

Jai
They have no connections to the national grids
so when the power plant went down, there was no plan B

The UK has connectors to France for example

Europe has connectors all over the place.

It's telling that the Brexiteers weren't allowed to push for the UK to be that sovereign that they wanted the interconnectors cut. Because that would expose the pisspoor nature of our energy provision.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 16/02/2021 17:53

Thank you so much, @ListeningQuietly and @DGRossetti. I have lived away from the UK for so long now that I have no comprehension of How Things Work there any more.

Jai They have no connections to the national grids so when the power plant went down, there was no plan B

I'm the same as Jai Blush

So they gave no connectors to the national grid because they didn't want to follow laws about conserving energy, saving the planet, being more efficient?
Is that right?

ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2021 17:55

Minou
Yeah, pretty much.

Texas legislature voted to look to Secede from the USA recently
but luckily Biden is willing to send in shit tons of FEMA assistance
to Ted Cruz's voters Wink

DGRossetti · 16/02/2021 17:57

If anyone wants to nerd out,

www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/

there are 5 interconnectors shown, so you can see where energy is going to - or coming from.

Thank god for nuclear - we need so much more. Hopefully the Rolls Royce SMR project will bear fruit. If not electrons.

DGRossetti · 16/02/2021 17:58

Texas legislature voted to look to Secede from the USA recently

Good luck with that ....

EveryoneRevealsThemselves · 16/02/2021 18:00

People on twitter are going to town on Texas government figures (especially Ted “spineless insurrectionist” Cruz) and throwing back all the shitty tweets they’ve made in the past about California and it’s problems with energy.

In all seriousness though, I have friends out there who’ve spent their nights in their cars as it was the only way to warm up.

Wow!

Let me get guess.....now the Senators/Leaders for Texas want help from the national grid?

I understand this is really dangerous for the people of Texas, but if you don't want to be part of "the club", you can't expect to use thier facilities.

Why is this reminding me of something? Hmm

ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2021 18:10

Minou
You might say that, I cannot possibly comment Grin

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 16/02/2021 18:11

@minou123 - you've got me there. [puzzled]

Grin

Who knew that being part of a reliable infrastructure (or a union) would provide emergency back up, should your own go tits up and stop working?

Roussette · 16/02/2021 18:35

I'd seen something about power cuts in Texas, thanks for explaining it!

Whatever happened to the Moonies ?

The majority of them supported Bernie Sanders, apparently.

About the Hare Krishnas:

Picture it. A small group of men in Santa Claus costumes walking down Oxford Street, chanting, "Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, Christmas Christmas, Merry Merry, Happy New Year, Happy New Year, New Year New Year, Happy Happy"...

ListeningQuietly · 16/02/2021 18:41

At the last big anti Brexit riot the Hare Krishnas were handing out bowls of vegan curry to stewards
it smelled LUSH

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/02/2021 18:44

That wasn't a riot! It was a spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.
