Excellent rebuttal from Raskin

DuncinToffee · 12/02/2021 22:51

Trump defense attorney and personal-injury lawyer Michael van der Veen accuses the House impeachment managers of “prosecutorial misconduct.” That’s a very serious charge against serious lawyers that a) shouldn’t be thrown around so cavalierly and b) is not backed up by evidence.

DuncinToffee · 12/02/2021 23:18

This is an intellectually dishonest question by Rubio.

He's prob aware that Trump was impeached while he was still in office for an act while he was in office.

The House never impeached Hillary Clinton when she was SOS. So the Senate can't conduct an impeachment trial of her

DuncinToffee · 12/02/2021 23:26

The Senate has finished its question-and-answer period, @SenSchumer says, leaving only closing arguments to be delivered from both sides. Expect those tomorrow, followed by a vote.

DuncinToffee · 12/02/2021 23:28

.@SenSchumer announces the Senate is about vote to give Officer Eugene Goodman the Congressional Gold Medal.

Goodman is in the back of his chamber - and pats his heart as the entire chamber gives him a standing ovation

The anger is a tactic. He's probably perfectly calm and cheerful at this point in time because, as pp have pointed out, he has nothing to be angry about. He has whipped himself up into an apparent rage and is throwing wild accusations because it puts the opposition on the back foot. XH and my dad both used that a lot, and members of the public caught out doing something they knew they shouldn't use it in my workplace. It may be unprofessional but it works.

DGRossetti · 13/02/2021 08:44

Answering my own question, it seems Clinton v. Jones (1997) established that the President can be sued in civil court once their term is over.

So after this charade, maybe the families of the dead and injured from the 6th will have a case against Trump. And his lawyers will have to carry what has happened in the senate as evidence.

Very interesting from Heather Cox Richardson

TheNorthWestPawsage · 13/02/2021 09:18

Keep in mind Michael Van Der Veen, attorney to Trump, is a personal injury lawyer.

Do I hear crickets?

Melania Trump 'bitter' about popularity of new first lady Jill Biden.

Melania Trump disengaged from her husband's second impeachment trial and bitter over Jill Biden's publicity.

I was woken by somebody-or-other on the radio (an American) saying as with authority that "the prosecution called not a single witness. They had four weeks to prepare and they didn't call any witnesses" as if he were completely ignorant about why that might be. I suppose that is going to be the takeaway from this partisan bit of politicking.

Gah.

Roussette · 13/02/2021 09:46

Orange Interesting read, thank you. As Heather's observations say... 'today just got a lot more interesting'.

I do not understand how Trump can say he did not know the Capitol was invaded. He is never away from a television. Of course he knew. To say otherwise is pathetic and ridiculous

Interesting in deed but I shan’t get my hopes up.

There aren’t enough decent republican senators.

Probably the secret service didn't tell him about it just like when Russia offered the Taliban bounties to kill US troops. 😉

There is a clip on twitter showing Trump et all watching the marchers before he went on stage to give his speech. He can't use that defence not knowing the Capitol was raided. He had a massive screen in his marquee & Kimberly Gilfoyle was dancing to Gloria. It looked like a party than a political event.

lionheart · 13/02/2021 10:55

I think the various security agents would have kept him informed.

Roussette · 13/02/2021 11:02

Interesting....

shero.substack.com/p/tuberville-and-raga-now-directly

On January 5, 2021, the night before the deadly insurrection at the US Capitol Building, an elite meeting supposedly took place at the private residence of the president at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC, just blocks away from the White House.

The photo attached explains it all...
'Charles W. Herbster, who was the National Chairman of the Agriculture and Rural Advisory Committee for Trump’s administration, created this Facebook post at 8:33 pm/ET on Jan. 5, 2021, and claimed standing “in the private residence of the President at Trump International with the following patriots who are joining me in a battle for justice and truth.”

Suggestions of a better lawyer for Trump.

minou123 · 13/02/2021 11:54

The problem i'm having at the moment is I can see the clear evidence of DOOFUS guilt and I know everyone else can see it, included GOP.
But, I have to stop getting my hopes up that he will be found guilty.
I have to keep reminding myself that no matter what is said, GOP will vote to acquit.

The sad truth is: When Trump said he could walk down 5th Avenue, shoot someone and get away with it (or words to that affect) - he was right.
