Man being asked if they're pregnant??

223 replies

CC2021 · 10/02/2021 16:24

Had the covid vaccine and as a female, was asked if there is any chance I'm pregnant. Fair enough question I thought. But a male friend was asked too and the nurse told him "you can't be too careful these days". Umm what??

AIBU to think it's ridiculous to ask a MAN if they're pregnant?

People are wary enough of the new vaccine as it is , and are wary enough about covid they are probably a bit scared of being there , being greeted with a staff member who doesn't appear to know men [and post-menopausal women] don't have babies could be enough to tip them over the edge and have them walk out all together.
This. It makes the NHS look like idiots who don't understand biology.

Sumwin1 · 11/02/2021 08:32

@littlemisslozza

The midwife at my booking in appointment for my first pregnancy asked if I was a woman, and had I been born a woman.

I'm sorry but this is beyond ridiculous!

This is on job applications too. It’s the world we live in it does seem a bit mad but I think it is necessary.
Covidcorvid · 11/02/2021 09:08

@Cauterize

I agree, medical staff are simply going to look completely incompetent, asking 70 and 80 yr olds if there're pregnant. It's bloody stupid. Doesn't anyone have common sense anymore?!
😂😂

You're not allowed to have common sense in the nhs. Someone will have decided this as policy and individuals have to do as they're told. Though yes you can argue that the individual who made the policy has no common sense.

But after nearly 20 years in the nhs it doesn't surprise me.

I got bollocked my a manager once for saving a person's life because it wasn't my role and a Dr should have done it. There was a Dr there, struggling who asked me to help and explained what they needed me to do. Nobody else there. The person would have died. But apparently letting someone die is better than doing something you haven't been trained to do even though a 3rd year medical student is allowed to do it.

PizzasTonight · 11/02/2021 09:13

I had my vaccine yesterday and I wasn’t asked this question - I must look like I’m past it 😀

VickyEadieofThigh · 11/02/2021 09:40

@DobbyTheHouseElk

My mum was asked if she was pregnant. She’s nearly 80. She thought it was hilarious.
I got asked if I might be pregnant when I went for an X Ray last year. I'm 62 and although I'd love to be able to say it was because I look young enough, I don't.

That said, transmen in person (not in photos) are usually relatively easy to spot, beards and all. Their women's bone structure gives them away. If the OP's male friend was unusually slight, the nurse might've had a point.

Thelnebriati · 11/02/2021 11:27

@Okokokbear

Anti or pro trans view aside. I actually don't think this is a thing which effects anyone else apart from the person being asked. So why are people so bothered?
If you've never had to deal with a man turning angry because he feels slighted, then it can be hard to grasp how much of a problem it is.

Staff shouldn't be put in this situation. Its absurd.

Lovely1a2b3c · 11/02/2021 11:45

Haha; they've obviously been told they have to ask everyone!

Lovely1a2b3c · 11/02/2021 11:47

Although some transwomen (men who present as women) do have 'periods' apparently so maybe they have 'pregnancies' too, just the former is without blood and the latter is without a birth. It's all very silly.

I guess some transmen (men presenting as women) can really be pregnant but that must be such a tiny minority.

Lovely1a2b3c · 11/02/2021 11:49

* Sorry, I meant women who present as men= transmen, who can really be pregnant.

RootyT00t · 11/02/2021 23:29

@Thelnebriati so we should just not ask everyone (or pick who we ask) so that no man gets 'slighted'?

Colorindex · 11/02/2021 23:39

It was a joke, FFS! Or an odd clinician... I work at a vacc hub and I can promise you we aren’t routinely asking men if they’re pregnant. Don’t forget we’re looking at their NHS info to record the vaccine, and they’re booked appts only.

Colorindex · 11/02/2021 23:49

This thread is up there with the ‘they’re banning ‘Christmas’ threads. I.e. not true. So I can’t answer YAbu or yanbu because the AIBU itself is ridiculous as it’s not happening.

LilyWater · 11/02/2021 23:58

@Trickyboy

Nope. It's barking mad.

Either you are a female where this is an appropriate question. Or you dress and behave as a woman. In which case by all means ask.

If however you are male. You CANNOT get pregnant. No matter how politically correct you think you are being. Because biologically in humans it is impossible. So why ask a pointless question.

Exactly this. Fundamental biological realities don't just cease existing because a few people in the 21st century say so. It's biologically impossible for a man to get pregnant. End of. I could choose to start calling myself a man tomorrow but I would still be a woman. Even if I removed my uterus, I would still be a woman (same as any other woman who's had an hysterectomy for whatever reason). I don't care what some people are trying to brainwash others to think by scaring them into submission for fear of being labelled "offensive" for simply stating biological truths that have been around for over thousands of years. I'm following science.

Exactly, said the same earlier - "we're not allowed to call Christmas Christmas anymore, it's got to be called Winterval!" Totally misleading.
Mockolate · 12/02/2021 00:39

Bah, think I've posted on the wrong thread (easily done as there's so many nearly identical ones)

CC2021 · 12/02/2021 07:00

@Colorindex I didn't say it was a routine question asked by everyone. I said my friend got asked by one (weird) clinician who definitely wasn't joking. The nurse didn't have access to NHS records before giving us the jab. I don't know what it's like at the general public vaccination centres but at the NHS staff vaccination centre they only saw the form we had filled in on the day prior to giving us the vaccine. They're booked appointments in the sense that lots of us are booked in to the same time slot.

Anyway, I still think it's ridiculous. My friend is a man. A man cannot get pregnant.

Okay, let me re-phrase that then. We’re not asking ANY men if they might be pregnant.
Like I said, this is a none thread. The NHS hasn't gone mad or is ignoring biology et etc etc.
I’m not sure I even believe this happened. What did the consenter say when their colleague apparently
asked that question in all seriousness?

CC2021 · 12/02/2021 07:52

Clearly, based on this thread alone, some NHS staff are asking men if they're pregnant. He told her No of course not and looked very bemused. Which is when she said (in all seriousness) about not being too careful these days Hmm

OP posts:
Walesrecommendations · 12/02/2021 07:58

Haven't RTFT but I told my mum about this yesterday and she said when she took my grandad for his vaccination they asked an entire room of octogenarians if they might be pregnant Hmm

needtoseperate · 12/02/2021 08:02

I’m a registered dental nurse, sometimes I have to read and tick the medical histories for patients who can’t do them online, I skipped the pregnancy question for a retirement aged gentleman then he says “you missed one” a bit gruffly, I got all flustered then realized what he meant and we had a laugh

Colorindex · 12/02/2021 08:19

OP you should send this into the DM they love these ‘the worlds gone mad!’ Type stories. Immigrants eating the queens swans, ‘winterval’ and all that. Might even pay you.
Or maybe not - they’re still in the ‘F you EU we’re better at vaccinating ‘ mode aren’t they. If you think about it the NHS has pulled off an astonishing undertaking, despite our apparent incompetence...

No thank you. I abhor the DM. I totally agree the NHS are doing amazingly pulling off the roll out of the vaccine. It's not been easy given the years of cuts but they're doing fantastically. We can think the NHS are doing amazingly in a certain regard whilst thinking some aspects are crap. Off topic but most of us who work for the NHS think some of the policies we have to adhere to are utter rubbish but that doesn't mean we are criticising every aspect of the system, just recognising that nothing is perfect. Anyway, I digress.

SpringtimeBluebells · 12/02/2021 10:19

If someone was born female but dresses as/or uses male/identifies as male so trans man then has sex with a man and gets pregnant ....

Does that mean heterosexual since presenting as male but not biologically male so female and having sex with male and then pregnant or if having sex with man but presenting as man then gay since both assuming male genders.... oh my I have a headache... it doesn't really matter anyway... only if a medical question needs to know if pregnant for safety reasons...

Colorindex · 12/02/2021 12:52

‘ most of us who work for the NHS think some of the policies we have to adhere to are utter rubbish but that doesn't mean we are criticising every aspect of the system, just recognising that nothing is perfect’

This has nothing to do with that though has it? One tired clinician or admin person said the wrong thing ( allegedly? ) so this isn’t ‘policy’ if nah kind. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ e slipped up in the last few weeks and said sir by accident or jumbled my patter which is what happens when you are dealing with 20 patients arriving every 10 mins for 12 hours.
I don’t get embarrassed when I make a mistake because I know that by shift end we’ll have vaccinated 1200 or so people, none of whom had to wait more than a few minutes from walking through the door to taking their seat for 15 mins at the other end.
It’s exhausting, it’s tiring being ‘on’ all day for so many people, while asking the same questions, going through the same routine.
So it’s not a policy anywhere to ask blokes if they’re pregnantc but I suspect that you’re already well aware of that.

CC2021 · 12/02/2021 13:04

@Colorindex I didn't say it was policy. Like I said, I digressed. I'm not sure what the "astonishing undertaking" has to do with my post nor why you seem to be disputing this happened when several other posters have said it's happened to their friends / family too. You seem to be taking this thread a little too personally.

none of whom had to wait more than a few minutes

Can I come to your vaccination centre please for jab 2? I was waiting 30 mins before I had the jab and then obviously the 15 min afterwards. Which of course is obviously still fantastic and I'm happy it took less than 1 hour to get the jab. But why, a few minutes is amazing.
