Man being asked if they're pregnant??

CC2021 · 10/02/2021 16:24

Had the covid vaccine and as a female, was asked if there is any chance I'm pregnant. Fair enough question I thought. But a male friend was asked too and the nurse told him "you can't be too careful these days". Umm what??

AIBU to think it's ridiculous to ask a MAN if they're pregnant?

The confusion is expecting to see a woman (as an example) and someone who appears in every way to be a man walks in. That’s quite confusing and requires clarification in case someone’s medical notes are wrong or you have the wrong patient.

Lancrelady80 · 10/02/2021 19:58
@Lancrelady80 I don’t want to derail the thread, but I’ve honestly had some awful experiences over the years because of my gynae issues, most recent one was being told by a nurse that I don’t need to be tested for HPV or STDs despite having bleeding and abnormal cells because I’m a lesbian and lesbians can’t catch HPV or STDs (which is completely incorrect). Another one was having to explain to a gynaecologist how I was “having sex” if my partner is a woman.
Shock That is appalling. I hope you put complaints in, those hcps are clearly in need of training.

Expecting to see a woman... as in.... heels, a skirt... lipstick? Stereotypical rubbish. Their biological sex should be recorded accurately, checked if necessary and the person can then present however they want to.

AJ1425 · 10/02/2021 20:16

The midwife at my booking in appointment for my first pregnancy asked if I was a woman, and had I been born a woman.
I also had to attend our local dedicated women's hospital for a few years due to a dodgy smear and the screens where you book in, the first thing is asks is are you a woman or a man? I havent yet given in to the temptation to see what happens if you select man.

Elsiebear90 · 10/02/2021 20:22

No as in I’m expecting to see someone who looks physically like a biological woman, clothing is irrelevant, not someone who for all intents and purposes appears to be a biological man.

I’m not talking about a woman wearing “men’s” clothing. I’m talking about a woman who may be on testosterone and who has had surgery, who outwardly appears no different to a biological man (I’ve had a few patients like this). Someone appearing to be the opposite sex to what is in their notes requires clarification, likewise if someone appears to be a completely different age, as it could be the wrong patient, which often happens. Anything that indicates you may have the wrong patient needs clarifying for obvious reasons.

Ridiculous. Sex covers it all really. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Elsiebear90 · 10/02/2021 20:27

Why are you objecting to it being on their notes that they are trans though when it would be helpful? Other than you thinking “it’s not necessary” what other reason do you have? Are you a healthcare professional?

Mockolate · 10/02/2021 20:28

Might seem daft to me and you who are not trans, I know I'd have been Confused Hmm when I had my first baby lol.
If I was to have another one I'd just assume it was to include trans men who would be pregnant too.
I'd say yes to both your midwives question, and let a trans man say no and yes respectively when they're asked or whatever.
Makes no difference to my answer, and the midwife would know the other patient who is trans is a trans man by their answers.

toocold54 · 10/02/2021 20:28

My mum was asked if she was pregnant. She’s nearly 80. She thought it was hilarious.

Grin love this!

It's just routine questions they have to ask everyone OP. If they were trans or a manly looking female and they were pregnant and the nurse hadn't asked they could lose their jobs and the vaccination could harm the unborn baby.

Mockolate · 10/02/2021 20:29

This - the "argument" usually goes "how would they know if you could be pregnant if you identified as a man?"
Surely them asking questions like the pp poster's midwife did would be helpful

KizzyKat91 · 10/02/2021 20:31

This has made me laugh! I volunteer in a vaccination centre. The poor people checking people in and filling in the assessment forms have to ask the same list of questions over and over again for 7 plus hours. It’s incredibly repetitive and boring!

I can guarantee she asked it automatically without thinking. I’ve overheard it happen numerous times today. She’ll have just said what she said to save face and have a bit of a laugh. It’s nothing to do with trans people.

TwelvePaws · 10/02/2021 20:31

Healthcare needs to be efficient. Sex covers it, do you not agree? Sex is the only ‘helpful’ fact.
Would it make a difference if I was a healthcare professional?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/02/2021 20:32

On this occasion I think it’s fine tbh. There will be trans men getting vaccinated, and where do you draw the line between who may or may not be a trans man?

Trans men are never at the forefront of discussions - it’s always trans women - so tbh I’m quite glad their needs are getting a look in for once!

TwelvePaws · 10/02/2021 20:34

Mockolate

All they need to ask is sex. It’s then becomes very obvious whether they could be pregnant or not. It’s very simple.

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/02/2021 20:40

My 85 year old dad and 80 year olds mum were both asked. They weren't offended.

Elsiebear90 · 10/02/2021 20:40

It’s more efficient to know that you have the correct patient and for the patient to not have to clarify their identity constantly because they appear to be the opposite sex to what you have written down, that’s my point. We write down very clearly on someone’s notes when they use a different name to their legal one, for the same reasons, so we don’t think we have the wrong patient and so the patient doesn’t have to repeatedly confirm their identity when HCP are confused by them being called and referred to as “Joan” when we have the name “Margaret” written down, as an example, because it makes our jobs more efficient by preventing confusion and mistakes, and also makes the patient more comfortable. This would be no different.

It would make a difference because you would be speaking from experience and not just with some vague idea of how you think things work in healthcare.

Okokokbear · 10/02/2021 20:49

@CC2021

Slightly off topic as not specifically related to trans but I'm not sure why a person would be more likely to say yes to a verbal question but no to a tick box on a form anyway...
Some people can't read at all or very well.
CorianderBee · 10/02/2021 20:50

@Ereshkigalangcleg

Why don't they just ask men if they are a "trans man"? Less awkward. Most people think the idea that men can get pregnant is utterly ridiculous and they would be totally confused by the question.
Well, I actually think more men might be offended by this than being asked a clearly rote question. It also doesn't answer the question 'are you pregnant' it just asks 'are you capable of being pregnant'... which isn't the issue.

Why not get to the point in one Q without wasting anyone's time rather than asking two or three to get the same result?

Okokokbear · 10/02/2021 20:53

@Trickyboy

Nope. It's barking mad.

Either you are a female where this is an appropriate question. Or you dress and behave as a woman. In which case by all means ask.

If however you are male. You CANNOT get pregnant. No matter how politically correct you think you are being. Because biologically in humans it is impossible. So why ask a pointless question.

Regardless of your views. Do you not see someone could present as a man but have female reproductive organs so could be pregnant? It doesn't matter about your ideology. People do dress as to appear male or female when they are not in possession of the matching reproductive organs. That is a fact. So the question make sense.

Let's not start this up and derail.

Then I’m speaking from experience. Wink

Sex matters. Gender doesn’t. I don’t really know what else to say. So I won’t bother.

I’m off to watch a funny video of a lawyer that looks like a cat. Maybe he is a cat, because he looks like a cat. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t think he wanted to look like a cat, but if he did, could he choose to be a cat and insist everyone calls him a cat. If he insisted he was a female cat, not a male human, could he use a litter tray in the office instead of the men’s toilets. 🤔

Oh lordy. I watched that earlier, it was funny Grin
However how the heck do you drag that into a trans thread
Yes, maybe he wanted to test out the waters and see how everyone would react when he logs onto next week's Zoom meeting calling himself Kibbles and meowing and asking everyone to call him 'meow/meowself Confused Grin Hmm Biscuit Grin

No, it doesn't. We have all heard of stories where women have given birth despite not even knowing that they are pregnant. You could ask a woman if she pregnant, she could answer 'no' but it would be the wrong answer.
If you were really concerned about possible foetuses you would do a pregnancy test every time.

FortniteBoysMum · 10/02/2021 22:56

There are cases where trans men are with trans female partners and the trans man has had their genetic child before fully committing to surgery to confirm their gender. So no she was not joking. She was asking because in this day and age who knows.
