To ask what to make as a ‘birthday cake’ for DH who doesn’t like cake?

I’d like to make DH a ‘birthday cake’ but he doesn’t like cake, so I suppose what I mean is a big baked treat we can sing happy birthday with before eating (and maybe stick a candle in!)

He likes all other baked goods - brownies, cookies, biscuits, pastries etc but I do normal batches of those all the time so would like to jazz it up a bit. He just doesn’t really rate cake. So I’m looking for a bit of a showstopper baking recipe that will impress him ... without being a cake Grin

Any ideas?!

sarahC40 · 10/02/2021 11:58

Chocolate roulade filled with fresh cream, raspberries or cherries. Super easy and impressive? Making one this pm just because...

My dp has Crohns Disease and can't have sugar in his diet. I normally make a meat pie for him with candles in!

Hadalifeonce · 10/02/2021 11:59

Profiteroles piled high covered with a sauce he likes?

Fantasmic143 · 10/02/2021 11:59

Brookies? Delicious combination of brownie and cookie. I belong to a baking club and these were the last month's bake - they were AMAZING!

Croquembouche? The massive pyramid of profiteroles - am holding out hope for a big enough party for my 40th to have one Grin

BoogleBear · 10/02/2021 12:01

I mean it’s not sweet - but my friends once did me a 3 tiered ‘cake‘ of 3 circular cheeses on top of each other which was amazing!

I have no sweet tooth so over the years they’ve had to get quite inventive with what they can stick a candle on Grin

Dark chocolate torte? I do a lovely one with a biscuit base & raspberries.

A trifle? I know it’s not baked but still delicious!

biddybird · 10/02/2021 12:05

Baked Alaska? I've wanted to try this since I was 8 years old and am still waiting for someone to make one for me.

M0rT · 10/02/2021 12:05

You could do a mini Croque en bouche.
I had one for my wedding cake and it was delicious!

hernameis · 10/02/2021 12:05

Just make a more deluxe version of your brownies (extra chocolate, nuts etc) stack them up with a candle in the top. I think nigella shows this in her domestic goddess book

Cynara · 10/02/2021 12:08

Lemon meringue pie! I make one for my cake-refusing DP every year, he loves it. The meringue just about supports the candles as long as they're small and light!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/02/2021 12:16

Nigella suggests making loads of brownies and piling them up instead of a birthday cake.

I don't like cakes or biscuits. Where I used to work there was a tradition of one of the team making a cake for the birthday person. When it was my birthday I got a delicious walnut and blue cheese savoury bread. Much better than any cake
