It is people that are getting things wrong, not the other way around.

The Bible does not change
God does not change

Just being part of a fashion does not wash. If God has said something is wrong, it is wrong.
Yeah, let's go back to the good old days where gay people were shunned or even arrested. 🙄

lightand - God doesn’t have any power

@MasterBeth
God has a little more power than Hamlet!

You can say it as much as you like but it doesn’t make it true.

@lightand 'Inspired'' also means that the Bible was influenced by the political, social and cultural conditions of the time. A lot of it was also based on myth and legends.There is absolutely no archaelogical evidence that the Exodus happened- The pyramaids were built by well paid craftsmen who had superior living conditions, and there was no evidence that Jews were enslaved by Egyptians. this was because mcuh of the first few books of the torah was revised during the babylon age when the jews were in exile and needed a nice story of exile and victory to comfort them.

However, despite knowing the exodus story is myth, I still go to great pains to ensure I do not consume bread/grains for 7 days. This is because I value the tradition and I can appreciate the story which still has relevance today. It is a festival of freedom and even in the 21st century, there are still countless enslaved people.

You can be religious but still differentiate truth from legend.

@lightand *for seven days during the yearly festival of passover.

Similarly for the christmas- the fesitval of Mithras was also on 25 December so there is evidence that Christmas too has pagan origins. However, it should not detract from the Christmas Story if you are a believer.

Inspired by God does not mean what you have written!!

Where have I said that God doesnt have any power?
Parker231 · 13/02/2021 12:15

Lightand - I am saying God has no power. You said he had more power than Hamlet.

MasterBeth · 13/02/2021 12:18

You haven’t. That is Parker’s reply to you.

It’s hard to trust your understanding of reality when you can’t even understand the workings of the Mumsnet message board.

Isn't that what your literal interpretation of the Bible advocates though?

God who created everything, is hardly going to have made a mistake with his own Holy Book and have got things wrong in it!!!!!

So when it comes to homosexuality God made a mistake in his own book then?

lightand · 13/02/2021 14:26

@trappedsincesundaymorn
No.

yomommasmomma · 13/02/2021 14:28

Because most people are too lazy to get out of bed early on a Sunday morning and to commit to something.

lightand · 13/02/2021 14:28

@H00th00t
It may have in the Old Testament. I dont know.
But not in the New Testament which is after the Old Testament.
The Bible moves forward in time. Some parts of NT supercede OT.
[I seem to have been saying that in one form or another to people for many years].

lightand · 13/02/2021 14:31

If people choose to wilfully not read properly, or wilfully takes bits of the Bible out of context, or wilfully act as if they dont understand, that is not up to me.
But God does exist, and we all will answer to Jesus for our thoughts and actions, so I would urge people to think carefully about what they do in life and especially in regards to God's Word.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 13/02/2021 14:39

and we all will answer to Jesus for our thoughts and actions

You might, I won't, because I can't answer to someone who I believe doesn't exist.

Because most people are too lazy to get out of bed early on a Sunday morning and to commit to something.

You actually think that's the reason fewer people follow a religion? There are plenty of other things that people might rather be doing than going to church on a Sunday morning than going to church, particularly if they don't believe in god. Besides, churches do have services that aren't in the morning, don't they?

MissingLinker · 13/02/2021 14:44

@lightand
As you seem very certain about this, any insight as to why homosexuality is considered sinful by God?
Because, when talking about "sexual sin", I can see why one would condemn all forms of sexual abuse, for instance, or adultery, as they harm people. Homosexuality, not so much.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 13/02/2021 14:46
@trappedsincesundaymorn
No.
So you think it's right that gay people should be shunned then because that's what God wanted? If you don't, then by your own admission, God is wrong.

onlychildandhamster · 13/02/2021 14:47

@lightand can you read biblical Hebrew, Aramaic or biblical Greek? If not, I am not entirely sure how you can be sure what the Bible says. Given that an English Bible is just a translation and not a great one too.

I study Hebrew so that I can understand what the Torah actually says and not just rely on commentary.

But God does exist, and we all will answer to Jesus for our thoughts and actions, so I would urge people to think carefully about what they do in life and especially in regards to God's Word.

What is the point of urging atheists to think carefully about what Jesus will think of them?

You saying "God does exist" is just an expression of your belief, it's not a fact. Just as I will say "God does not exist". It is my firm opinion, but I can't prove it. The difference is that I wouldn't advise Christians on how to behave based on my atheism.

Incidentally, I'd like to think that I do think pretty carefully about what I do in life, but that's got absolutely nothing to do with Jesus.
