to want to know what the offensive tweet about Captain Tom Moore said?

A man has been charged by the police after making an offensive tweet about Captain Tom Moore. Obviously a nasty and mean-spirited thing to do. But ever since I read the headline I can't stop wondering what it said to get the man charged. I avoid Twitter generally because impression is that it is mostly a cesspit of vile abuse, so what can this man have said that is worse? It can't have been a death threat; racist or homophobic abuse seems unlikely, and being really, really mean on the internet isn't illegal. This is not a sly invitation to pile on with insults to Captain Tom Moore btw! I am just genuinely perplexed.

Presumably there is good reason for not releasing it and it's not appropriate to speculate.

I agree.
AStudyinPink · 09/02/2021 18:20

I think the insult was printed. Scottish guy? I know what it is, anyway.

CanIGoHomeNowPlease · 09/02/2021 18:21

It was something along the lines of the only good English soldier is a dead one.

Typical nationalist Scottish bollocks

AStudyinPink · 09/02/2021 18:21

And you’re right, OP, it doesn’t cross into hate speech for me at all. A ridiculous prosecution.

I didn’t read that one. I read something to do with him being cremated.

slashlover · 09/02/2021 18:24

You can find it easily if you google. It was about British soldiers.

Poshjock · 09/02/2021 18:24

If you (or anyone) really wants to know it’s on this link. thewaltercumpershunterclub.wordpress.com/2021/02/04/joseph-kelly-from-rutherglen-south-lanarkshire-glasgow-hate-crime-towards-a-national-treasure-who-raised-millions-to-help-the-nhs/

I suspect there is also a Sectarian element to this and certainly the loudest shouts I saw on FB were from the other side of the Glasgow derby. There is much history and backstory that persons who live in West Scotland may understand more than others.

MrsSlocombesPussy · 09/02/2021 18:24

It is vile, but I don't think it is a police matter.

Poshjock · 09/02/2021 18:26

It wasn’t Nationalist. It’s nothing to do with him being English. Everything to do with him being a soldier.

1000umbrellas · 09/02/2021 18:31

Ah, you all are more competent googlers than I am. I hadn't considered Scottish nationalist rubbish. Nasty indeed. But still doesn't seem actionable by law.

Can you elaborate @Poshjock?

@AStudyinPink

It was something along the lines of the only good English soldier is a dead one.

I didn’t read that one. I read something to do with him being cremated.

Replace "English soldier" with "Muslim" or "black person" and see how it feels then.

Of course it's hate speech!

Lancrelady80 · 09/02/2021 18:35

If not Nationalist, why bring "English/British" or whatever it was into it?

MasterofPuppets · 09/02/2021 18:39

It had absolutely nothing to do with Scottish nationalism. The tweet said British soldier. This was much more to do with sectarianism, which is, sadly, still rife in Glasgow and many other parts of Scotland.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/02/2021 18:41

It was a vile tweet, but not a police matter IMO.

ParkheadParadise · 09/02/2021 18:42

Definitely, nothing to do with nationalism.

thisisnotus · 09/02/2021 18:43

I was just about to say the same - definitely not Scottish nationalism, I agree it's probably sectarian and harks back to British soldiers in NI.

NuniaBeeswax · 09/02/2021 18:53

Absolutely fuck all to do with Scottish politics and nationalism, and the tweet said British soldier and not English. This clown would have posted the same shit regardless of where in the UK Tom was born.

NuniaBeeswax · 09/02/2021 18:54

"If not Nationalist, why bring "English/British" or whatever it was into it?"

Because too many people in Scotland care more about Irish politics than that of their own country despite having never set foot in Ireland. This wasn't about Scotland at all.

StopTouchingYourFairyGarden · 09/02/2021 18:56

Absolute scumbag and yes driven by the bigotry that permeates certain aspects of Glasgow culture.

That said it is interesting to see how seriously it is treated in comparison to the threats of actual crimes (mostly rape and murder) against women that occur multiple times daily on Twitter.

Saz12 · 09/02/2021 18:57

Awful.

As he said “British” I interpreted it as sectarian. And of course comments like this are hate speech.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 09/02/2021 19:05

I read somewhere it was something about him burning?

Not a police matter IMO but absolutely disgusting nonetheless.

MrsMercedes · 09/02/2021 19:05

I'm glad police were involved

hate speech should always be addressed.
