to want to know what the offensive tweet about Captain Tom Moore said?

A man has been charged by the police after making an offensive tweet about Captain Tom Moore. Obviously a nasty and mean-spirited thing to do. But ever since I read the headline I can't stop wondering what it said to get the man charged. I avoid Twitter generally because impression is that it is mostly a cesspit of vile abuse, so what can this man have said that is worse? It can't have been a death threat; racist or homophobic abuse seems unlikely, and being really, really mean on the internet isn't illegal. This is not a sly invitation to pile on with insults to Captain Tom Moore btw! I am just genuinely perplexed.

@Saz12 especially now as it’s often linked with gang violence and serious organised crime.

LadyMayoGoodway · 09/02/2021 21:14

@RJnomore1 yes it’s always been a convenient smoke screen. I think that’s why many people don’t understand the extent and seriousness of it.

1000umbrellas · 09/02/2021 21:27

I wonder if sectarian tweets are policed if they don't reference a high profile and revered figure though? I'm not very familiar with the history of Scottish sectarianism (though have had a crash course from dh this evening) but i would imagine in that milieu this kind of language is flying around the net all the time.

As millions of PPs have mentioned it's not against the English but against Protestants.

Yes replace Brit soldier with Muslim soldier and you can see why it's a hate crime.

Sadly a lot of English don't realise how awful this sectarian nonsense is in NI and Scotland.

It still amazes me, a middle aged old wifie living in England, that I don't know the religions of some of my closest friends! May I add I don't want to know! It just surprises me when I occasionally think about it!

In Scotland, particularly Glasgow, you know EVERYONE'S! You just do, automatically, by the football team they support, by their name, and sometimes by their occupation.

I remember about 20 years ago there was a promotion in my industry and wondered if X would get it. My colleagues looked at me in surprise and told me they wouldn't get it because they were Catholic!

Agree there is much worse on Twitter but that doesn't make it right that this fuckwit isn't prosecuted!

TartanLassie · 09/02/2021 21:32

I am also horrified at the number of posters who don't understand the difference between English soldier and British soldier!

ChonkyChook · 09/02/2021 21:33

@Fatandfifty49

I would have found it upsetting if it were my family member.

It was something like 'The only good British soldier is a deed one. Burn Auld fella, burn'

To me , it harped back to times when we were at war with Scotland in the 18th century and was definitely stirring up anti English hatred

Just making shite up now.
1000umbrellas · 09/02/2021 21:41

Thanks to all who have pointed out it's a sectarian, not nationalist slur. I made the same mistake. This thread has actually been pretty enlightening, not at all what I was expecting!

@TartanLassie so where would that leave Catholic/Protestant incomers to Glasgow where their religion wasn't easily obvious from their name etc? Would they be considered outwith the rivalry or would people try to find out which they were and "assign" them an allegiance?

TartanLassie · 09/02/2021 22:01

People who would want to know, would first ask what Scottish football team they supported.

They could ask about how many kids they had, siblings etc. Where they got married.

It's amazingly easy.

TartanLassie · 09/02/2021 22:02

However I should add the caveat that I haven't lived there for over 20 years, so hopefully isn't as bad!

BashfulClam · 09/02/2021 22:08

There was a campaign against sectarianism years ago calked nil by mouth. This stuff needs to be stamped out. Unfortunately it continues.

RJnomore1 · 09/02/2021 22:09

What school they went to

Theyd be shit out of luck if you didnt give a rats arse about football though.
RunningFromInsanity · 09/02/2021 22:14

Definitely wasn’t a criminal matter and it seems charging him is just about the police wanting a high profile pat on the back.

MaskingForIt · 09/02/2021 22:19

@NuniaBeeswax

Absolutely fuck all to do with Scottish politics and nationalism, and the tweet said British soldier and not English. This clown would have posted the same shit regardless of where in the UK Tom was born.
NI is part of the U.K., and I am pretty sure he wouldn’t have said it if he had been born there.
ParkheadParadise · 09/02/2021 22:20

Everyone in Glasgow has definitely been asked what school they went to at least once in their life 😂

NuniaBeeswax · 09/02/2021 22:21

"NI is part of the U.K., and I am pretty sure he wouldn’t have said it if he had been born there."

I beg to differ.

Can't believe I forgot that one!!

Poshjock · 09/02/2021 23:17

@RJnomore1

I am absolutely utterly horrified at the Rangers fan up there trying to link this to football (other side of the Glasgow derby)

It may be sectarian but sectarianism has fuck all to do with genuine football fans and your linking it there merely shows your own prejudice.

Completely wrong on all counts I'm afraid. I don't follow football at all and I am entirely agnostic. What I am is an ex soldier, married to a Catholic Scottish soldier who was run out of his home town after serving three tours in NI.

Mr Kelly is all over his now deleted social media in his Celtic kit and Irish flags and as I said, most of the witch hunt against him was coming from two very distinct camps - Rangers fans and Veterans groups. The link to football is already there.

Genuine football fans, I imagine, don't give a stuff about this shit, but sadly there is a minority that continues to sully the game in Scotland by keeping that link alive - on both sides. Me? I'll stick to golf and motor racing.

I think the police acted for two reasons 1. There is a drive to stamp out secterianism by strong decisive action and 2. There were many complaints received about this. I think the Walter Mitty Hunters Club do refer such matters directly to the police and I know my own Social media was swamped shortly after he made the post by many of the veterans groups I am in trying to find out who he was and where he lived. I imagine he's very much in hiding right now.

Sbowiegirl · 09/02/2021 23:32

It’s absolutely disgusting. But, I’m a bit concerned about it being a police matter; it feels like people can’t say anything disagreeable without being arrested.

And I know I’ll be lambasted for this, but there is part of me that is vaguely perturbed about the hero worship around Captain Tom Moore.

MercyBooth · 09/02/2021 23:33

That is really really vile. But there have been numerous vile tweets about the Grenfell residents since the day of the fire and i dont recall any one being arrested yet.

Sbowiegirl · 09/02/2021 23:35

@ParkheadParadise. When someone moved into the street when I was a kid.

“Ur ye a Catholic or a proddie?”
“Neither, I’m a Hindu”
“Awright, well ur ye a Catholic or Proddie Hindu?”

redpencil77 · 10/02/2021 00:07

@CanIGoHomeNowPlease

It was something along the lines of the only good English soldier is a dead one.

Typical nationalist Scottish bollocks

Like the dead ones that kept the UK safe all these years? Along with all the other UK soldiers?

I wish these people would experience 24 hours in a country undefended by people like Sir Tom Moore, then be present when he woukd eat his words.

redpencil77 · 10/02/2021 00:09

Is the acceptable answer to that one, "I didn't?"
