Can we take a vote.....who will be following lockdown measures after May?

150 replies

DuchessofHastings1 · 09/02/2021 17:12

There was a thread in Coronavirus but I wanted to do a vote to see actual numbers.

Vaccine roll out has been impressive. Our government seem to be digging out of the hole they got us in.
The over 50s (who count for 99%) of Covid deaths and the majority of hospital admissions will be vaccinated by end of May.

Who will be sticking to the rules once the elderly and vulnerable are vaccinated?

YANBU - NO
YABU - YES

Also you seem up to be implying that the over 50's are elderly. ..bit rude

DenisetheMenace · 09/02/2021 20:06

We’ll be seeing immediate family once we’re all vaccinated. Haven’t seen mum and stepdad since Dec 2019, MIL not since March of the same year (distance and medical reasons) but they’ve all had their first jabs now, second in April.
We would love to see our daughter and grandchild once we’ve had ours but as she is under 30 it will be some time before she has hers, so we will wait. She has selflessly protected her dad for the past year so there’s no way we’ll be putting her family at risk, however remote.
Will otherwise be keeping to ourselves and abiding by all other restrictions as long as is needed.

Livelovebehappy · 09/02/2021 20:12

Maybe a bit more relaxed with the rules, if still in place. But it depends. Obviously if it goes rampant again, with different variants and mortality increasing to high levels, i’ll obviously comply.

Chloemol · 09/02/2021 20:30

Yes I will be following any rules. You do know the vaccine won’t stop you getting it, just in a milder form they hope won’t need hospital, and you can still transmit

And millions under 50 won’t have been vaccinated

BeautifulStar · 09/02/2021 20:37

I’m planning on seeing family in a few weeks when their second vaccine has kicked in so it’s a no from me. Il be doing everything I possibly can as soon as things open up too. I really hope shops/restaurants etc are open by May.

DuchessofHastings1 · 09/02/2021 20:38

@AlternativePerspective

OP, there is a COVID topic for a reason - so people can hide it.

Don’t post on the main boards just because you’re not getting enough attention in the COVID topic. Have reported and asked for it to be moved.

Not enough attention? I haven't posted anything on Covid topic Confused A stated in the OP, I wanted to see actual percentage of votes, and votes can only be on AIBU I assume?

@Bookwords

The coronavirus board is that way >>>>>

Off you go!

I know where it is thanksSmile but as stated on OP, I wanted a vote. Thanks for your input though.

Can you tell me where in this thread I've implied that? I would say over 65s are elderly. I mentioned 50s as there is a lot of hospital admissions in this group.

@Icantcontrolmyface

I get you and not sure why people are saying its a silly question. We are seeing my 91 year old nan from this week .She was vaccinated a month ago and says this could be her last year. She already said she has lost a year of her life and at her age she can't afford it. I'm not turning her away sorry. In May I'll be seeing my best friend as well for definite as I can only take so much. I'll still be careful, use sanitizer, not go to any silly lockdown parties ect....but No, I will be not be following the rules to a T.
Thanks at least someone does.

On AIBU, it seems people are that eager for a disagreement and to tell all their anger out on internet boards, they dont actually take time to read the post properly.

Why May?!? 😂😂

DuchessofHastings1 · 09/02/2021 20:54

@LadyMayoGoodway

Why May?!? 😂😂
I give up. I really do. It says May because the over 50s have been vaccinated which count for the majority (99%)of hospital admissions and deaths.

Thanks for those who have understood and gave an answer.

Other posters just haven't read the OP properly, too eager to pick and over analyse every word.

It was a hypothetical question to the government's original narrative for the vaccine to be our knight in shining armour.

Should have known it was too much for AIBU

OP posts:
Lovestonap · 09/02/2021 21:02

I think it's a valid and interesting question. How long do people believe they can/will keep up restrictions for?

I'll be seeing my family by May, legal or not.
I think some people have got confused and seem to think the goal of a lockdown is to eradicate Covid in all its forms. It never was, it's to keep hospital admissions at a manageable level. I expect that to be happening by May anyway.

DuchessofHastings1 · 09/02/2021 21:12

Yes I do know the vaccine wont stop it from transmitting it but that's not what it's for. The point of the vaccine was to stop being getting seriously ill and dying from and being admitted to hospital to save lives and the NHS. Most of the vaccines are above 90% efficiency rate. Millions under 50s are only counted for 1% of Covid deaths. So are you suggested the majority of the working population have their lives cut off for a virus that has such a small chance in killing them or them being admitted to hospital?
OP posts:
itsgettingwierd · 09/02/2021 21:17

I'll follow rules. But I'm less stringent when numbers are low - eg pop to my mums who is terminally ill just to stand on doorstep and say hi. (3m away usually!)

But those who say they won't - how? If pubs etc are shut you can't go to them.

If gatherings still carry fines will you just risk it?

I won't go out of my way to do things that pose a risk or break the law but I'll make smaller decisions for sanity that maybe against guidance (eg drive to somewhere to walk).

DuchessofHastings1 · 09/02/2021 21:19

@TinaYouFatLard my thoughts exactly.

There could be hundreds of variants of Covid. There was variants with the flu.
The government are already in talks with booster jabs.

Are we to live like this for the foreseeable future in fear of mutant variants.

Oh so you’re a clairvoyant OP, sorry my bad. Any chance you can let me know whose going to win the FA cup that month as well?

At least someone does Grin

I know we cant barge into unopened shops and pubs but what we can do is make our dissent known.
The government know the consensus of the public. They've been placated the majority with furlough, school vouchers and the media scare mongering.
But people are getting ants in their pants. Winter lockdown, a year in, massive effects on their mental health, their children's mental health and education and learning.
The government know this. As Rishi Sunak said, the government are changing their narrative.
The vaccine was our way out they said (though no doubt their scientists would have mentioned variants m) and now the goal posts have been pushed back.
How long will people put up with this for?

OP posts:
scaevola · 09/02/2021 21:32

I'll follow the rules for as long as it takes. Not because I'm happy about it, but because I recognise the need.

This is a Tory government - big on small government and prioritising business and the economy. Thet're not putting in measures for shits and giggles. The one thing we can trust then in is opening to the max as soon as there is the first dawn of scientific OK

The last thing I want is fourth lockdown because we get the 'Armistice Wave' because there is poor compliance with steady easing of restrictions.

SarahBellam · 09/02/2021 21:35

This is why the virus will hang around for longer than it needs to and why we will struggle to get the economy going again. I’d be in favour of rapid vaccinations for a few weeks and then a hard hard lockdown for 3 weeks. Curfews, everything shit over Easter - the lot. Really REALLY stamp on it, and then open again carefully. I don’t want to continue to live in a twilight zone of being able to do some things but not others. I don’t want moronic gimmicks like eat out to help out when restaurants have to close again a few weeks later. I want them opened. I want to go to one with my mum and dad, and go to gigs, and live a real life, not sneaking in and out of my mums back garden.

Chuckleknuckles · 09/02/2021 21:36

Yes, I’ll see people. I will happily continue to wear a mask.

firstevernamechange · 09/02/2021 21:40

I've done my own things since March last year. Shoot me.

lazylinguist · 09/02/2021 22:25

Do you think that will make the government change the rules, if rules still need to be in place?

I don't believe we'll still be in lockdown in May, but if we are, I will still be sticking to the rules.

GreenSlide · 09/02/2021 22:45

@DuchessofHastings1

Fucking jesus of nazareth.

Of course it's a hypothetical question. You dont have to answer or comment.

The narrative from the start by the government was for the vaccine to get us back to normality. Johnson said this numerous times. We have now have a vaccine where over 50s will be vaccinated. Based on that, would u still live in a lockdown YES I DONT KNOW THAT YES I DONT KNOW WHAT THE RULES WILL BE HENCE IT BEING A HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION Yet the goal posts keep moving.

No point getting pissed off, people are pointing out we won't have a choice. If shops are still closed, we can't go in them. If police are still stopping people at checkpoints we can't go sailing around on days out. So you need to explain the hypothetical circumstances a bit better if you want us to answer the hypothetical question!

fluffi · 09/02/2021 22:48

Generally the Government locked down too late and previously have relaxed restrictions too early and quickly.

I bet again they'll be chomping at the bit to relax rules and open things up too quickly so people spend money etc.. If we're still in lockdown / tier 4 style restrictions in May then it'll be because its necessary and so will be sticking to the rules.
