Snow on cars

PerfectlyPortioned · 08/02/2021 11:04

We live next door to a playground that's covered in thick snow this morning. Lots of kids playing in it. A mother was standing watching her kids scraping all the snow off our 2 cars to make snowballs (parked in our drive which is open to the road) and I asked her (perfectly nicely) not to incase the cars get scratched. She looked at me like I was totally mad. Didn't want to be a killjoy but they are new cars (and on our drive).... I genuinely don't think I would let my kids do that....

WIBU?

Yabu

Cars are a great source of fresh snow

Aprilx · 08/02/2021 11:07

YABU. Unless they were scraping it off with a sharp metal tool.

bridgertonian · 08/02/2021 11:07

I’d be delighted they were saving me the job of scraping frozen snow off myself! Having said that I wouldn’t let my children go on someone else’s drive though, that’s cheeky.

Marmite27 · 08/02/2021 11:08

If they’re going on your drive for it, YANBU.

Emmelina · 08/02/2021 11:08

Unless they’re using a garden shovel to heft it off of there, YABU. Surely they’re just gloved hands.

mojitosnow · 08/02/2021 11:08

I personally wouldn’t get het up over this but equally wouldn’t do it to somebody else’s car incase they didn’t want me to. I wouldn’t stop DCs picking up a handful off a random car to throw a snowball but if they were stood there for ages at the same car scraping the snow off I’d probably say ‘come on now leave that car alone, we look weird’ Grin

Findahouse21 · 08/02/2021 11:08

I told dd yesterday that she can't take snow of other people's cars. I think it's quite presumptuous

Snoozysnoozy · 08/02/2021 11:09

YANBU you're right, paintwork could be scratched meaning either a costly repair or reduction in resale value. Your property on your drive.

warmeduppizza · 08/02/2021 11:10

I don’t like this either. I live in a street where I regularly get dents in my car doors because parents let their kids play football in the road, and when I try to protest I get called all sorts because ‘kids will be kids’. Just take them to the park and respect other people’s property.

Londonisburningg · 08/02/2021 11:10

YANBU... They’re going on your private drive to get it.

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 08/02/2021 11:10

You're a misery guts.

Unless as possible said they went on your drive to get snow. If it's just a parked car you're being unreasonable

MaizeBlouse · 08/02/2021 11:10

YABU and a bit precious but I don't think I'd let my kids get snow from a car, I'd encourage them to get it from elsewhere. They're still little though and a bit unpredictable, maybe if they were older and I knew they'd be careful I would let them, unless the owner gave me a mouthful Grin

TinyCake · 08/02/2021 11:11

Also I think if it's on your car then it's tour snow to play with not theirs Smile

Mousehole10 · 08/02/2021 11:11

Cheeky if the kids to do this. I don’t think they’d scratch my car but it’s MY SNOW. I want it to play with.

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/02/2021 11:11

Defo not appropriate if the cars are on your drive. Cheeky of the mum to let her kids go on your drive.

Annabell80 · 08/02/2021 11:12

Couldn't care less if it was on the road but it's cheeky to go on someone's drive.
However scratch the car? What were they using? Metal tools?

ilovesooty · 08/02/2021 11:13

The cars are your property, on your drive. YANBU.

SofiaMichelle · 08/02/2021 11:13

On my word! No, of course they shouldn't be scraping snow off a stranger's car!

What if they scratched it with a stud on a cuff or a fastener on a glove, or something???

I know that on MN many think a car is just a mobile skip to transport DCs and associated detritus around in, but for other people in the real world a car is often their pride and joy and scratches can cost a fortune to repair, let alone being unsightly and devaluing.

Would people think it's ok for a stranger's children to go into someone else's garden and build a snowman?

It’s literally there in the OP. The cars are on her drive.

No metal tools - but I asked her to stop them when I could hear one of their zips hitting the car as they had their coats open and were repeatedly stretching across the bonnet.

The mother is rude and needs to teach her kids to have boundaries.

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/02/2021 11:16

Yes yanbu op. Zips and toggles from jackets and gloves , trespass on your driveway, no respect for others property etc.

PussGirl · 08/02/2021 11:16

Children are not tall enough to scrape off snow without leaning all over the car & scratching with zips etc so I agree - not on.

Also I'd not want them in my garden without permission.

JenIsAGem · 08/02/2021 11:16

I'd feel extremely uncomfortable with it to be honest. If they're coming onto or touching your property then surely they're the ones being unreasonable.
My vote - YANBU.

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/02/2021 11:18

My DC are grown up would never have even considered doing that.

If we have snow, I will say to local kids to help themselves from my lawn or driveway, but they know to either wait to be offered or come and ask. Car snow is out if bounds unless I've brushed it off.
