Snow on cars

PerfectlyPortioned · 08/02/2021 11:04

We live next door to a playground that's covered in thick snow this morning. Lots of kids playing in it. A mother was standing watching her kids scraping all the snow off our 2 cars to make snowballs (parked in our drive which is open to the road) and I asked her (perfectly nicely) not to incase the cars get scratched. She looked at me like I was totally mad. Didn't want to be a killjoy but they are new cars (and on our drive).... I genuinely don't think I would let my kids do that....

You were definitely not BU, I wouldn't let my kids do that. They shouldn't have been on your drive at all, let alone touching your cars.

TowandaForever · 08/02/2021 11:40

@24butfeeling80

But how does writing with your finger on dust scratch a car?!

AndreaMartelsCoat · 08/02/2021 11:41

Yanbu! It's rude, same level of rudeness when people chuck their rubbish or bags of dog shit in someone else's bin. Just don't do it.

My dc used to get yelled at by me when they were little and I'd noticed them scraping snow off of other peoples cars.

HeronLanyon · 08/02/2021 11:42

Well this does scratch paintwork. However I am 100% sure I did this a lot as a child so absolutely leg to stand on. I. The scheme of things ‘what goes around comes around’ first time ever used that but feel strongly this year of all years I wouldn’t give a toss about a car and if I did it wouldn’t be out in the snow anyway.
Agree cheeky to go into private driveway but I know I did that too.

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/02/2021 11:43

But how does writing with your finger on dust scratch a car?!

Because it's particles of grit and dirt and when you move that about with your finger, it scratches.

Which is why you rinse your car with water to remove that before you start rubbing it with a sponge, scratching the finish.

24butfeeling80 · 08/02/2021 11:43

@TowandaForever because the dust/dirt/debris on the car already acts as an abrasive, pair that with the pressure of your fingers you’ve basically just made a mild sandpaper.

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2021 11:44

I wouldn't be letting my DC touch other people's cars. Was there not enough snow elsewhere?

If I want my car cleared of snow I'll do it myself.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 08/02/2021 11:47

I wouldn’t give a toss about a car and if I did it wouldn’t be out in the snow anyway.

so it's people's fault if they are not home or don't have a usable garage now?

Glitterb · 08/02/2021 11:48

YANBU in the slightest! Why would anyone think it’s acceptable to let their kids do this?

I wonder if the Mum would be happy to cover the cost of repairing potential scratches from coats etc? I bet she wouldn’t! And I bet she doesn’t let them play near her car either!

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 08/02/2021 11:48

@Dinnafashyersel

YANBU re your drive. YABU to suppose a child removing snow in this way is likely to do more damage to paintwork than the average trip on a slushy potholed and gritted road.
how the hell do YOU drive? 😂
poppycat10 · 08/02/2021 11:49

@Findahouse21

I told dd yesterday that she can't take snow of other people's cars. I think it's quite presumptuous
?? You need to get the snow off your car anyway, to drive safely.

Of all the things to get worked up about, this is really not one of them.

Plussizejumpsuit · 08/02/2021 11:50

Do you honestly think this will scratch your car?!

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2021 11:52

I am quite particular in the way I clear my car of snow and where the snow goes Blush

I do think that children could scratch the paint work with their coat buttons and zips leaning over the car, or if they've been picking snow off the ground grit on their gloves.

Pyewhacket · 08/02/2021 11:52

Clear the snow off yourself then. Problem solved.

JoanOfArc8 · 08/02/2021 11:53

YANBU!

Dc should respect other people’s property! There is no way I would allow DS to walk onto someone’s drive and then scrape the snow off their car! What’s that teaching him?

How would all those posting that the OP is being a killjoy, feel if it was a group of older teenagers running up and down their drive, scraping the snow off their new cars? That’s what these dc whose mother let them do this today, will grow up to be.

Sargass0 · 08/02/2021 11:53

At least they didn't nick your car bonnet for sledging!

HeronLanyon · 08/02/2021 11:53

iknow no. I wasn’t blaming anyone else for anything. I don’t have a garage. I was taking about me. If I did have a car I cared that much about I may have tried to buy with a a garage or got a cover - me - not suggesting anything about anyone else at all. My post said I wouldn’t give a toss but if I did (if I finally bought that 1973 Fiat Dino as an exampleGrin) then went on to suppose why I would do if it were snowy.

WaxOnFeckOff · 08/02/2021 11:54

@Plussizejumpsuit

Do you honestly think this will scratch your car?!
Whether it does or doesn't is really irrelevant tbh. Why should OP take the risk it will when woman and her DC can do something that doesn't mean they are trespassing and potentially damaging the car.

Do people know that it's okay to say no to your DC and even if they cry, that's ok to?

Sparklingbrook · 08/02/2021 11:54

@Pyewhacket

Clear the snow off yourself then. Problem solved.
So you have to go out and clear the snow from a car you aren't going out in to stop other people's children doing it? Confused

They aren't clearing it in any effective way by the sound of it anyway.

Galvantulang · 08/02/2021 11:54

Yanbu that's batshit.

No way my kids would be messing about in someone's drive, let alone touching their cars (or anything else). 😱

BillMasen · 08/02/2021 11:54

A lot of people are not understanding that yes, scraping snow or writing in dirt does damage a car. It’s slight, but it’s there and if it’s something you care about then it’s annoying and expensive if/when you have to resolve it.

Just because it’s something you don’t know or care about doesn’t make someone precious!

Hoppinggreen · 08/02/2021 11:55

No, people shouldn’t be touching your car and they shouldn’t be on your driveway

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 08/02/2021 11:57

it doesnt seem right somehow to touch your cars

Woolff · 08/02/2021 11:57

It's not about metal tools or whatever, they shouldn't touch your property at all.

They should BE on your property.

NorbertMeubles · 08/02/2021 11:57

It is cheeky to go on your drive to do it. All those parents saying it's ok, how bloody entitled do you sound? Turn it round and see how you would like someone else's child going on to your property to do something. I'll send my kids over now shall I to choose some pebbles from your drive to paint for a project or some leaves from your garden. Just keep off other peoples property. And I don't give a shit if I sound miserable.
